OOfficial Discussion Thread for: RAW (July 4, 2016)
Tonight on RAW: WWE knows very few of us will be watching the show live, at least speaking for America (where rain is threatening to ruin the
fun for vast swathes of the country, but for the most part, if fireworks are a GO in your region, you're probably not getting home until 11pm at
the earliest).... but it does seem like they're doing their level best to convince you to set the DVR, and create enough of a buzz that you
actually bother to watch your recording in a prompt and timely fashion....
In addition to the standard week-to-week servicing of stories related to the upcoming Draft and Battleground PPV, WWE has pre-announced 3 big
matches...
It'll be WWE Champion vs. IC Champion, when Dean Ambrose faces Miz in a rematch from last Thursday's execellent edition of SD.... their
hostilities started on an episode of MizTV, and ballooned into a main event, which saw Miz score several compelling near falls before Ambrose got a
flash pin by catching Miz with Dirty Deeds as Miz came off the top rope... good chemistry, with a vibe that Miz took Ambrose to the limit, justifying
a rematch.... with Reigns on the sideline, preventing WWE from focusing on 3-way tension among the Shield, little side excursions like this are a nice
way to prevent Ambrose/Rollins from going stale before Reigns can be worked back in.... you could even have Miz ask for the same stip they did last
week, and demand to be inserted into the upcoming title match (either as Reigns' replacement, or as a fourth), which would justify having
Rollins at ringside for all kinds of shenanigans (be they successful or back-fire-ish)....
WWE is also hyping a "USA vs. the World" Elimination Match.... while no specific teams have been named, it's gonna be 8-on-8, according to
nation of origin, which means Strange Bedfellows... I fully expect this to be where we get our biggest dose of Cena/AJ Styles/The Club drama, since
they are all American, but almost surely won't co-exist well.... Zayn/Owens/Jericho provide the similar situation over on the International Team
(Zayn and Owens DID team up for a brief moment to attack Jericho, but that won't last).... this is the sort of thing that may ultimately be
schmozzy and meaningless, but I bet it's still a harmlessly fun ride....
Several notches down, and also trying to take advantage of 4th of July Patriotic Fervor: Rusev defends teh US Title against Titus O'Neil....
Rusev already dispatched TItus cleanly at the MitB PPV, and I don't see this as much more than a chance to keep Rusev hot until the Draft, at
which point a new contender can emerge (after last Thursday, Cesaro sure would work for me)...
New Day vs. Wyatts is the primary ongoing issue that won't be serviced in those three marquee matches (well, I GUESS you could put them in the
16-man, but that sure would eliminate the need for any other Americans); it is shaping up like Rowan/Strowman will shoot for the tag titles, while
Bray/Woods have a separate little dynamic happening..... Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks for the Women's Title is definitely coming up next.... and
the women's division is also supporting a very fine secondary storyline, with Becky Lynch looking for revenge on Natalya.... lastly, Enzo & Cass
vs. the Social Outcasts may or may not be A Thing, given the fact that the Outcasts started a fight last Monday, but then promptly ran away from it
before it could really get going....

I remember 11 years ago, on a seemingly throwaway 4th of July episode of RAW, Shawn Michaels turned on Hulk Hogan at the very end (which made me mark
the fuck out at the time). Will they do something like that tonight? No, but I remember it being a really cool surprise at the time.
Also, I can't believe Hogan/Michaels was 11 years ago. Fuck.
