OOfficial Ratings/Discussion Thread for: RAW (August 31, 2009)
OO Nation: All discussion pertaining to RAW (airing August 31, 2009) should be done in this thread. It will remain pinned at the top of the
Current Events section for the remainder of the week. In discussing the program, we'd love it if you shared your numerical rating for
the show (from a low of 0.0 to a high of 5.0, in any increment of one-tenth of a point). For full details on the ratings scale and how to join in on
this informal "Battle of the Brands," please be sure to check out the
OOfficial Guidelines for TV Ratings/Discussion Threads.
Tonight on RAW: Oh Lordy, its Monday Night RAW with your very special guest host... the tower of power, too sweet to be sour, "the American
Dream" Dusty Rhodes. US Champion Kofi Kingston gonna get funky like a monkey when he defends his title - if you wheel - agains' Carlito, Jack
Swaggah, and The Miz. The Miiiiiiz dun promised to win da title so he gonna be a rockin' and sockin' tonight, daddy! And da Unified Tag
Champions be in the house when Big Show takes on Mark Henry. Whoa, baby! And someone gonna go to the pay window when Chris Jericho faces MVP. Let me
tell you something, it does my heart good to see my boy on RAW representin' my pretty face but Cody's mama be cryin' over the way he
acting with Legacy. And they gonna have to pay some heavy dues when DX and John Cena come to town. Oh, it gonna be searing heartache and pain when
they take Legacy right down, Jack! But if if it be that way, let it be. Whoa, baby, its RAW and Its Dusty and its always a party when da Dream come to
town!
The flOOr is yours, OO Nation. Let your voice be heard and your thoughts on Brand Supremacy be known. Don't wait till after 11pm to post,
either. Pre-show previewing and prognosticating is certainly welcome. So discuss, debate, and rate!
Apologies to Rick for jumpstarting this one. Just saw that Dusty Rhodes was the guest host tonight. I didn't catch all of last week's
show and I don't recall this being mentioned in last week's RAW thread (or anywhere for that matter...but maybe just me).
Did this get announced at all prior to today?

It wasn't announced on last week's show. It was, however, pretty heavily rumored all last week to the point where I was taking it as
read.
I guess WWE.com confirmed it at some point over the weekend.
Also, by way of preview, pretty much the only thing WWE.com has is the fact that Dusty is guest hosting, and suggesting that he might have something
up his sleeve for Cody and his douchemates. No other segments/matches announced...
So, uhhhh, I guess you can expect tonight to be pretty heavy on Legacy. Smell the Ratings~!
Rick
EDITED TO ADD: at least Lilian will still be on RAW, even if just to annoy Hocking. She was asked to stick around for a little bit longer, since WWE
only got around to hiring a new girl (a singer and NBA dance team member) last week.

Wow, really? NOTHING? I'm so disappointed. As soon as I found out the hose was Dusty last week I was hoping I'd be able to beat Rick to
the punch this week. And then when Tex started the thread early I said "well, he probably did the joke himself." But NEITHER OF YOU! So now my
half assed one has to go up instead!

Sorry dude. But when they trotted out that worthless midget again to furthur piss on the rotten, mutilated corpses of Chavo's dignity and
Chavo's career, all I could think was "I swear this feud has gone on longer than Eric Young vs. Robert Roode and I'm pretty sure that
feud went on for something like 18 months".
This show was building up a decent amount of momentum up until that crap, and following that up with Big Show vs. Mark Henry just made it fall flat on
its face. And I sit here again wondering why I'm bothering with this when I could be doing any number of things I would be enjoying more and I
honestly don't know if its because its damn hard to break a 20 year habit or if its because I honestly believe that the one night I don't
bother is the night they'll turn the corner. I'm inclined to believe its the former.

Yeah, in general I tend to think WWE has a better mind about putting a bullet in the REALLY stupid and heatless feuds/ideas. TNA just lets them drag
and drag forever. But the Hornswoggle/Chavo feud and Abraham Washington's continued existence are really starting to make me rethink that
theory.

Just look at it the way I do: if they actually ever do "turn the corner", that means that the next few shows will actually be good as well. If
that's the case, then you won't have missed anything. You can probably afford to go without watching three universally well-rated shows
if it means that the next seven or eight will be just as good if not better.
In the meantime, I recommend video games. From my experiences, RPGs can usually take up a decent amount of time, UFC Undisputed can cause you to lose
a lot of time as well, since your shortest matches will still be a little less than 5 minutes, and Madden can also take a pretty decent chunk of time
if you do 5 minute quarters. If all else fails, go for an MMORPG or something like that. You only need to lose track of 2 hours of time, and believe
me when I say it is a lot easier than it sounds.

I hope you stuck around for that 4-way. While not an OMGFIVESTARS or anything, I found myself thinking at the end of the match, "Gee, wouldn't
it be nice if these guys were fighting in the main event sometime soon?" Hope springs eternal.
But then I remembered who WAS in the main event tonight, turned the TV off, and decided to do a quick post before bed. Maybe someday soon I'll
want to stay up until 11:07.

For sure, man. I should and could be finishing Arkham Asylum, or working on my Road to Glory on NCAA, or finishing the last 75% or so of Fallout 3

In fairness, the fatal 4-way wasn't too bad of a match.

It wasn't too good of a match either, though.
The show has basically redeemed itself slightly in SUPER smarky DX/Dusty skits that really does a number on WWE's claim that "we" don't
make up a significant portion of their audience. Because I'm pretty sure casual fans didn't laugh at Arn Anderson voicing the
Shockmaster.

I'll give this show a 2.8 because hornswoggle/chavo loses it a few fractions of a point. I thought the 4 way and the second women's match
were good (nice to see an old-fashioned work a body part match on wwe) and both of the Jerishow matches helped build their feud nicely. The main
event's first double cross could be seen a mile off but the rko on dusty was an interesting twist.
A couple of other more general thoughts:
- Shawn Michaels is starting to run like Terry Funk. That and the weird cross-eyed thing he has going on make me wonder how healthy he is/is going to
be in old age.
- Carlito seems to be slowly morphing into headshrinker samu as his hair and body shape change.
- I don't find dx all that funny anymore. I'm sure they used to be sharper than this.

That crowd was primed to give Cody a monster face pop if he would have gone after Orton after Dusty ate that RKO, but WWE pussied out on that and
decided to really shake things up by maintaining the status quo. Raw: always thinking outside the box.
Not a good show, but better than last week. I'd say right around a 2.0.

I don't know, I won't really fault the WWE on that one. I think the storyline of Cody being conflicted, but just being unable to bring
himself to attack Orton was good. While I'm sure the crowd would have popped big, I don't think anyone is expecting a Cody Rhodes face run
anytime soon. And as much as I hate Orton, I have to admit that his demeanor of "That's right, I just gave your father an RKO and you're
not going to do shit about it" worked really well.
And I know I'm in the minority here, but I thought tonight's show was the best RAW I've seen in a while (which of course isn't
saying much). Outside of the absolutely horrible continuation of Chavo/Hornswoggle and the plodding Divas battle royal, there wasn't anything
that horribly offended me.
Hell, I thought tonight even made Legacy halfway compelling and I don't think I've ever thought that in my life. Though I'm sure
that next week they'll be back to doing their usual job of boring the shit out of me.
I'm probably being slightly generous here, but I'll give tonight's episode a 3.0. Any episode of RAW nowadays where I only think
"Man, this sucks" two times is something of a miracle.

So I learned somethings tonight. Watching Raw with a non mark makes me feel dumber. It almost embarasses me that I still watch it.... but fuck it
who the hell do I have to impress anymore :-D.
I enjoyed tonights show fun hot opening and I didnt' seen dusty getting a RKO coming though I saw the swerve. Cody really got made to look like
a pussy there at the end of that match. And how in the hell could logically legacy be remotely concerned with Ortons well being after that display.
Gonna be hard for Cody to go home to thanksgiving dinner after that :-D.
I am in the minority Im sure...but even though it was slow and lumbering I actually enjoyed Show vs Mark Henry tonight... and as big man vs big man
goes I woudln't mind seeing this .... just one more time with a winner...I think Big Show is more athletic than we get to see and a
underappreciated talent and probably one of the most criminally misused wwe stars they have ever had.
The 4 way was fine but Id rather develop each of the personalities in their own segments more and please dear god scratch chavo vs hornswaggle
already.
Im of the opinion at this point the WWE needs to start making new stables...they obviously have no storyline writing ability for everyone so make the
story lines be against big groups. Got to be easier to write. WWE has alot of players right now that I think could be big one day. Im conviced that
Ted Dibiase Jr is going to be a player one day its time to give him more mic time and see what the kid has.
Jack Swagger too .... gonna be the man if WWE don't F it up.
Miz is getting bigger I think.... I hope he isn't juicing.
I think Jericho and Show shoudl pick up swagger and carlito
DX should get Kofi and Borne and do a angle of the older guys trying to direct the future of the WWE. (or bring back MnM and put them with DX and
move Kofi and Borne to smackdown)
Keep Legacy as is and consider adding Miz though he has no tie to the group, and they can have their own idea of what the future of wrestling should
be.
They need to either have MVP break out or move him back to smack down because the fans so want to cheer him. For whatever reason the WWE isn't
ready to move him on. I don't like MVP much but the casual fans do and I think its time to pull the trigger on him. At worst he could do no
worse than Orton and I think he was more ready than CM Punk with fan support or as heel. And I like CM Punk.
WWE has too much talent and a plethora of good young talent to be being so crappy right now.
As for Raw the show gets a 2.8 from me.

On a side note ..Bob Barker hosting Raw is fucking hilarious, and I want to watch for all the wrong reasons. I have absolutely no idea how this
train wreck will go but somehow I think I will be entertained none the less. Just the graphic of him coming to raw cracked me up.
Be neat if they have do a whole prices right themed show and have the wrestlers try to bid on items and then come up and they be all like tell him
what they wan.... A NEW IC TITLE SHOT MATCH bob ... yeah Im lame.
Having some of the wresters getting into it and some of them playing all serious could be fun too.
Ah well... it could be fun next week. I could never be on prices right because id be the asshole that started cussing when I got to play for the
dining room table and not the freaking car. Thats the most fun part of the show watching people trying to act excited for shitty prizes.

As long as you are going to have DX make fun of stuff Dusty came up with in WCW can we at least get one Dusty finish on the show just to put a bow on
it?
I hope that anyone who didn't see the swerve on Cena coming figured it out when they started introductions for the main event at 7 minutes to
the hour then took a commercial break. Sweet fancy moses WWE, would it kill you to pace your show so that it at least seems like there might be time
for an actual match as the main event of your flagship show?
So Kofi wins the 4 way to retain the title, I assume Miz decides that since he didn't get pinned he is still the number one contender and will
challenge Kingston at Breaking Point. Yawn.
It is a sad commentary on the depth of the womens division on Raw that they had a SIX person battle royal and I don't think they left any of the
Raw divas out.
And nobledictator, the name of the show is 'The price is right' not prices right.
Have you noticed that in every group of people there is a guy who just knows shit? He has no explanation for how he knows it or any reason to know
it, he just knows shit. Be careful around that guy, he is thinking of ways to kill you.

The DX/Dusty stuff was funny as hell, but....
It was only funny to "us." So what the fuck is WWE doing telling investors/advertisers they are "TV-PG" when the only good shit they do is limited
to a 18-34 demo like us? Either go back to the 80s and put wrestling back on Saturday mornings, like it was when was 11, or FUCKING PUT ON A DECENT
PRIME TIME TV SHOW, FUCKWITS.
The US Title four way was really good, but...
It only served to make me realize how much untapped potential RAW has. Think of the "SmackDown Six" from 2 months ago... think of how they could do
crazy shit like have upsets and Johnny Morrison winning matches he had no business winning and non-finishes that muddied the waters of who was REALLY
best. Then look at this mess of Kofi/Swagger/Carlito/Miz/Bourne/Chavo, and tell me they couldn't benefit from that same sort of wackiness. You
can't. Granted, it's not at the same very-top-level like the SD Six were, and nothing will get traction with WWE's current
retardo-ADD booking as we've seen so far on RAW with these guys, but with the US Title as the gravity-anchor for them to fight over?
C'mon: you could so some mega-cool shit with those six.
Henry/Show was about as good a giant lethargic fat man match as I've ever seen, but....
That's not exactly saying much.
Lilian was still there, just like I said she would be, and she was hot. There is no "but," here...
I'd be willing to go as high as a 3.2 for this non-offensive, but still under-performing entry. The Legacy stuff was just not nearly as clever
or engrossing or swerve-y as they thought. That's mid-card shit masquerading as main event, and ain't nothing gonna change my mind on that
till Orton un-mediocres himself somehow.

2.5
Oddly enough, it would have gotten a 3.x if Show/Henry had a finish. I was actually really enjoying that match and that surprised me. It doesn't
take much to make Henry interesting, all you have to do is give his matches an interesting story.
Watching Show struggle with Henry's strength was interesting to me and to be honest I'm looking forward to a rematch.
The four way was as good as you're going to get out of these guys on RAW. I liked the fact that the match didn't contain much in the way
of bullshit, it was all about winning a title. That right there gives them reason to continue this feud. Now, just add Chavo and Bourne to this shit
and you suddenly have a midcard.
Jericho/MVP was the usual case of "not bad" from MVP and "trying too hard" from Jericho. Acceptable TV filler.
The Women's stuff is the Women's stuff and pretty much can't get close to TNA so sadly it can't hold my attention. I've
wondered for a long time just why someone ready made for WWE (well, PG-13 WWE anyhow) like ODB hasn't headed back north.
Watching Gail Kim flounder despite her talent is pretty much all the proof I need of why. WWE just will not treat anything other than the Main
Eventer's with respect.
The DX/Dusty skits were fine by me, if not brilliant or anything. HHH does a decent impression of Dusty.
The swerve did not surprise nor did Orton attacking Dusty. Cody's reaction did surprise me however, as did the "Cody" chants.
I disagree with the sentiment that Cody should have done something. What would have been nice would have been Cody letting out a good old "Fuck you
Randy!". Turn him away from the camera, throw a bleep over it. We all know RAW is on a delay.
I also didn't appreciate Dibiase not just walking out. That would have left me with the impression that Orton's relationship with Legacy
actually is in a bad way.
Rather than "I'm your mentor!" which apparently means they're are slaves. Should this be the case than I'm glad I wasn't
involved in any mentoring programs as a child. Being a sniveling sycophant for a douche just doesn't seem appealing.

The "Cody" chants chilled me to my core. If that worthless, six-year-old looking, no-knee-pad-wearing, piece of shit ever gets a run, I will quit
watching WWE on basic principal and that includes Smackdown.
I hate that fuck Cody Rhodes.

I'm surprised nobody's really discussed the Mickie/Beth match, since I thought it was a notable standout on the show. For one, it was the
first time I've ever seen them click in-ring, and that was well overdue. Second, I was surprised that they busted out such a stiff-looking
style (and how well it worked). I know it's not up to Daffney/Hamda from TNA, but I thought it was a really good match.
More importantly, it was the only match/segment of the show that seemed to play up the submission focus of the next PPV. Makes me wonder if
we're getting a Divas title submission match at the PPV.
