My first ex was huge into holidays. Like, a little too into holidays: I'd suffer her wrath if we didn't treat the big ones as some sort of special event, and she didn't understand why I wanted to treat my birthday as just another day. As Valentine's Day approaches, I count myself lucky that I no longer have to worry about it; Sunday will just be another day of the year. As will Sweetest Day or whatever the hell it's called in autumn.

Dinners or practical gifts—just anything where you can spend time together—make sense, sure. But I've always been a function over form kind of person, so pretty baubles mean nothing to me, and I despise buying them. The worst part is the stuffed toys though, because according to Hallmark, what every woman wants is a piece of this:

I don't know if the Devil has a heart. But if he does, it's that. That is the spawn of demons themselves.

But you're not here to see nightmare-inducing plushies. You're here for wrestling, which is marginally better! Want to know how SmackDown went this week? Here's what happened...

Segment 1: Chris Jericho pops out with his full entrance to start the show. He's dressed to compete, but he's not facing AJ Styles quite yet. First, he needs to talk: and while he respects Styles, he doesn't like it. He especially takes issue with Styles calling himself “Phenomenal” since he hasn't done anything to earn it yet. (At least, not in WWE, and that's all that matters or something, as we know.)

So he keeps it short and calls down Styles, insisting that “phenomenal” isn't good enough for him. And Styles exits gorilla to make his entrance. No mics here... but the bell doesn't ring since the Social Outcasts (minus Bo Dallas since he's still recording a rap album for some reason) pop out of the back before we can get underway. The Outcasts talk shit, with Adam Rose insisting they're totally the “Social House Cats,” and meows at the faces.

Jericho tries to verbally eject them from the ring. When that doesn't work, he bops Heath Slater in the face with his mic. The other two attack him, and Styles makes the save, and quickly clear the ring. Jericho grabs a mic and says that he's still going to fight Styles later, but right now, they're going to team up against the Social Outcasts. Styles is down, and we kick it to ads.

Segment 2 [Tag Match]: AJ Styles & Chris Jericho defeat the Social Outcasts (w/ Heath Slater) by pin. Basically a squash, but this was a pure storyline match.

Back from ads and we start Curtis Axel and Jericho swapping “wins” in exchanges. Jericho then tags out willingly for Styles to hit a high dropkick, and the two alternate quick tags as they beat up on Axel. Eventually they have a friendly argument over who chopped Axel the hardest, but Axel managed to get a tag behind the faces' backs in the mean time. Jericho smirked as he exited to the apron, and the heel beatdown against Styles was on.

Styles caught his breath when he ducked a clothesline and hit a no-look enziguri. Jericho tagged in after and went house of fire, capping off with a Lionsault on Rose. But Styles then tagged himself in and hit a springboard flying elbow, then pinned him. The ref held up their arms in victory... and Jericho turned to hit Styles with a Codebreaker. The fans were split about 30/70 against Styles, the majority booing Jericho, but the rest chanting “One more time!” It wasn't to be as Jericho left otherwise in peace, and Styles licking his wounds.

Segment 3: OO does not recap RAW recaps.

Segment 4: During the recap, stagehands decorated ringside with a bunch of tables, which can only mean an appearance by The Dudley Boyz. They come out dressed in their civvies, but then we get more ads before we get to hear them.

It's Bubba Ray up first who is pissed at the fans since we should be paying attention to them. But we can't stop talking about Daniel Bryan, so we're jerks. They're also not happy since we look at them as nothing more than a nostalgia act, when they were and still are the baddest tag team on the planet. The Usos forgot that on Monday. Oh, and the tables we love so much? We don't get to see them again.

No, really: the Dudleys order the stagehands to take the tables out of there (except for the one conveniently in the middle of the ring). Bubba does make an interesting point that when we can't “We want tables” every night, we should be chanting “Let's go Bubba!” and “Let's go D-Von!” So this one table in the center of the ring represents the end of our happiness, and the last time we get to hear “D-Von... get the table!” Bubba says the first half of the catchphrase before he and D-Von gingerly collapse the table and gently carry it up the ramp and to the backstage.

Heh. Heel turn on Monday, indeed. A lot of fans cheered them when they first popped out tonight, but that promo is all it took to earn unanimous boos.

Pre-Segment 5: In my vacation from OO and wrestling in general, I haven't gotten to know much about the new divas. I'm quickly becoming a fan of them all, and as a bonus to me: Sasha Banks's music is really catchy. I wonder if it's on iTunes, and if it's any good hearing it in a vacuum.

Speaking of stupid things I notice: Sasha Banks hit the ring first, followed by Naomi and Tamina. Sasha Banks has been removed from the Beautiful And Dangerous Titantron package, but her name is still shown on the BAD mini-tron. Tee hee, or something.

Segment 5 [Singles Match]: Sasha Banks defeats Naomi (w/ Tamina) by submission. Decent match that could have had a slightly better story in the middle and lagged the beginning. The story was better than the action, the latter of which was a bit awkward and stilted; individual spots weren't that smoothly transitioned to, but the moves themselves were well executed.

Becky Lynch is out on commentary for this one.

Naomi opens with basic striking offense, while Sasha fights back with a bit more aggression. Both women split the offense but no spots to talk about as we go to ads.

Back from ads and the women engage in chain wrestling to little crowd reaction, then Naomi settles back in to basic striking offense. The first big move Naomi gets was a counter as the match spilled outside. Sasha stood on the apron and attempted to kick Naomi in the face, but Naomi caught her ankle and yanked her foot, causing Sasha to smash her spine onto the apron edge. Ouch.

Naomi from there went for back-targeted offense: back suplexes, backbreakers, and some roughneck offense where she just stood on Sasha's face just to be a jerk. Naomi also threw in a series of rapid crane kicks followed by a sweet roundhouse, which looked equal parts goofy and painful.

Rest hold from there before Naomi pulled Sasha up and threw her off the ropes, intending to hit a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Sasha countered it into a headscissors during the “whirl” part of that, and the hope sequence was on. Awkwardly times strikes from there capped off with a couple running knees in the corner, but Sasha couldn't close the deal.

As they rose, Naomi had a chance as she whipped Sasha off the ropes, but she telegraphed a back body drop too quickly. Sasha held up short and kicked Naomi in the face, which Naomi in-story oversold. This drew the concern of the ref, giving Tamina a chance to trip Sasha from the outside. As Sasha got up to her knees, Naomi made a miraculous recovery and hit that headscissors DDT thing that I don't think has a proper name. Shockingly, this didn't get the three.

What it did do was draw the ire of Becky, who rose from her commentating chair to engage with Tamina. That backfired entirely as Tamina controlled her while Naomi whiffed on her springboard moonsault. Sasha quickly exited the ring and made the save and talk some shit. Sasha reentered the ring form there and took a quick schoolgirl pin, but she transitioned through it and applied the Bank Statement. Naomi was a centimeter away from the ropes but had to tap. Becky applauded from ringside, but her face showed she didn't really want to.

Segment 6: Jojo interviews AJ Styles, who embraces the idea that he's a redneck, but rejects being called a rookie by Jericho on RAW. Styles won't let Jericho get into his head, and assures us that he's going to show us (and Jericho) tonight why he's called the phenomenal one.

Segment 7: During the Wyatt Family's entrance, we get a highlight montage of them, which is a weird thing to do on the show, I think. It's more a between-match thing on a pay-per-view, not during a weekly show entrance. But I'm not a McMahon, so what do I know?

The Wyatts aren't here to fight though, but to blather. Essentially, the Wyatts are declaring war on the “old titans” like Kane, Big Show, and Undertaker, because the Wyatts are a generation of new gods. It's all very entertaining but would come off as crazy bullshit if I typed it verbatim, so let's just say it was pretty good and short enough not to overstay its welcome. Not really worth pursuing on its own though.

Segment 8 [Six-Man Tag Match]: Neville & The Lucha Dragons extended-squash The Ascension & Stardust by pin. The heels sucker-punched the faces during their in-ring entrance pose, so they were already in the middle of the heel beatdown before as the bell rang to get things started. Neville gets a hot tag to Kalisto a minute later, and he quickly cleans house with a little assistance from Sin Cara. After a moment of worry, Kalisto hits the Salida Del Sol on Konnor, followed by a Swanton Bomb by Sin Cara, followed by the Red Arrow by Neville. That's all she wrote.

Segment 9: Highlight replay of Daniel Bryan's retirement speech and the press it generated. They conclude by advertising a collection of Daniel Bryan's best moments on the WWE Network, which should be available by the time you read this.

Segment 10 [Singles Match]: Chris Jericho defeats AJ Styles by pin. Fairly rough feeling-out sequence to start as they shove each other as much as they go for offense. It's Styles who lands the first few real strikes, though Jericho takes momentum after he slingshots Styles's throat against the bottom rope.

From there, Jericho goes with rougher offense, stiffer strikes and even flinging him against the barricade outside the ring, but Styles answered evenly without suffering any real heel beatdowns.

Oddly, I'm having a problem writing about this one. It's not paced like a normal match, and their moves are incredibly unusual, such as Jericho delivering a double underhook powerbomb-to-backbreaker, which looked amazing. Already I can tell this is one you should really check out on YouTube, but it's difficult for me to convey what's going on here. Seems as Jericho and Styles are on the tops of their respective games, I'm at the bottom.

Regardless, after the backbreaker, Jericho shot the half but failed the pin. He went for a follow-up Walls, but Styles slipped out and went on a striking flurry. Jericho cut it off with an enziguri, tried another pun, but couldn't finish him off.

Jericho then headed upstairs but got dropkicked out of the air as he tried a flying double ax handle. Both guys exchange forearms from there, but Styles whiffs on a dropkick and eats a Lionsault as a result. Pin, but only two.

Jericho goes old-school from there with a half-dozen punches, but suffers a fireman's carry to backbreaker from there. Pin, but only two. Styles teased the Styles Clash from there, but Jericho slipped it and successfully turned it into the Walls. Styles absorbed it for a while but slipped out, locked his legs around Jericho's, then rolled through and turned it into the Calf Crusher. Jericho started to tap, which was a really neat singular moment that I've not seen before: Jericho brought his hand up and started to lower it, but then stopped himself at the last second as he summoned every ounce of pain tolerance he had to reach hard to grab the bottom rope nearby. The crowd had been fully onboard by this point, but they were completely hooked on the spot. Excellent by both guys, and the fans fire up dueling chants as a result.

Styles cleanly broke, took a step away, and hit a baseball slide to send Jericho outside the ring, followed by a slingshot forearm over the top rope. Styles tossed Jericho back in, then started a springboard something, but Jericho knocked his foot off the ropes, sending Styles crashing to the canvas. Jericho quickly shot the half, but his legs were partially under the ropes, so the ref didn't count. Jericho didn't waver as he pulled Styles to his feet, flung him into the far corner, then followed with the Codebreaker. Pin, three, done in an excellent match.

Final Thoughts: Jericho may have won the night but that splits their matches, and I'm looking forward to the rubber match. Seriously, check out the match on Hulu or YouTube; it's one of the best singles matches I've seen in a while, especially since they didn't need any gimmicks or bullshit to be awesome.

Nothing else from me; the whole episode was pretty fast-paced, hence my shorter-than-usual recap. Solid episodic TV, and I've already said everything else that needs to be said. See you in a week, everyone.

Episode Grade: B+
