SD!: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
The SmackDown Six: 2009 Edition
June 20, 2009

Exclusive to OOWrestling.com

Still no precap… probably won’t be one for Monday either, but NEXT Friday everything should be back to normal with my precapping duties and unreliable movie reviews! Woot!

Segment 1: Josh Mathews is out in the ring to interview Jeff Hardy, who comes out presently. First we see some clips from the ladder match a couple weeks ago, including CM Punk cashing in the—Oh, wait… I don’t recap recaps!

He doesn’t really say much, or rather Josh doesn’t give him a chance to, because he shortly introduces Punk to come out as well. Josh is direct with his question: you stole the title from Jeff, and

now you stole a win from him on RAW, so what are you doing? Punk rolls his eyes and insists that both situations were totally within the rules, so he didn’t “steal” anything, and was just taking advantage of an opportunity. Twice.

Punk continues the tweener role, saying that in the ring, they both just want to win, and Jeff should totally be able to understand that. Jeff shrugs and agrees, and further says that they’re different, that they live their lives different ways. Punk echoes that, those he does so in a blatantly condescending way. Jeff plugs their match at The Bash, and we’re out to commercial.

Segment 2 [Singles Match]: Jeff Hardy defeats Chris Jericho by countout. Match was decent but nothing special. At the end, the fight spilled outside. Jericho tossed Jeff in the ring, and the ref went to check on him. From the crowd popped Rey, who gave Jericho a huracanrana into the steel post, then jumped back into the front row. Jericho couldn’t answer the ten-count.

After the match, Jericho went in the ring to bitch about the assault, and ate a Twist of Fate and Swanton Bomb from Jeff for his troubles.

Segment 3: Maria, Eve Torres, and Layla are fighting over a bottle of shampoo. Dolph Ziggler appears, they make fun of his name, and… that’s it. God, that was worth 60 seconds of my life, wasn’t it?

Segment 4 [Singles Match]: Dolph Ziggler defeats Khali (w/ Translator) by disqualification. Match was lame. The ending saw Translator on the apron to distract the ref. Dolph grabbed a chair and jumped in the ring. Khali noticed and turned around, so Dolph threw the chair at him and took a dive. Khali swatted the chair away, but then the ref turned back around as Khali started to pick it up. The ref saw Dolph down and Khali with chair-in-hand, leading him to believe that Khali broke the rules.

Segment 5 [Singles Match]: My Melina defeats Alicia Fox (w/ Michelle McCool) by pin. Match was lame. It ended when Melina was in the ropes, where her feet were in the ring but her body wasn’t (she was essentially sitting on the middle rope). Alicia went for a clothesline, which Melina did a Matrix dodge to avoid. Melina then got in the ring and started with a crucifix pin, then changed her mind and adjusted herself to hit a Pyro’s Fantasy to end the match. God I wish she’d do that move to me.

Post-Segment 5: After the match, Michelle came in and kicked her in the head for no good reason, then chucked her out of the ring. Michelle got her near the announcers’ table, then did a Punt Kick of Doom while her head was against the table. Geez… what’s really sad is that the kick looked about 50 times worse than anything Randy Orton has done in the past few months.

She then talked some shit—also of Randy Orton-caliber—before throwing the mic into Melina’s face and throat. Aw… My Melina Sympathy Gene is on overdrive!

Pre-Segment 6: Edge is out for his match against John Morrison. He whines for a bit about not getting his way in regards to the matches as of late, but is cut off by JM himself. JM responds that Edge is totally not entertaining and innovative anymore, that he used to actually “do stuff” rather than talk about stuff, and that he fast-forwards him on his DVR every week… which doesn’t really make sense since he never watches him on TV because he’s there in person, but whatever.

Edge tries to retort, but JM keeps interrupting him. Edge actually complains about it, which JM jumps on: “You’re complaining that I’m interrupting you? What are you going to complain about next?” JM finishes by saying, essentially, a whole lot of nothing, but he is clearly getting on Edge’s nerves, ending by saying that his ex-wife is a pig, which for some reason actually upsets Edge although it shouldn’t if didn’t actually care about her. Whatever… I guess I’m thinking too hard.

Segment 6 [Singles Match]: Edge defeats John Morrison by pin. Good match, with a couple high spots, mostly on JM’s part showing some Shelton Benjamin-like athleticism. The end of the match saw counter after counter, with JM managing to get the ropes on a Sharpshooter and leapfrogging a Spear, though Edge countered the Starship Pain and the Moonlight Driver. Edge finally won with a Spear, though it was clean. Definitely worth a watch!

Segment 7 [6-Man Tag Match]: R-Truth & Cryme Tyme defeat Shelton Benjamin, Charlie Haas, & Ricky Ortiz by pin. Meh.

Pre-Segment 8: Rey comes out for his match against CM Punk, but wants to talk to Jericho first. He mentions his little revenge he got on Jericho earlier, then demands a rematch. Jericho pops out and tells him no, since he already lost clean. Rey retorts that if Jericho hadn’t been obsessed with unmasking him, Rey would totally have won.

Jericho replies with his normal rhetoric, focusing on the fact that Rey’s mask is enabling him to do something… although his words were clearly dubbed in, making me wonder what he originally said. Regardless, Rey responds with a cheap pop that he won’t allow Jericho to insult the fans, and that the mask is worn purely for family honor rather than any sort of shield. Rey says that if he’s upset about anything, it’s being upset over Jericho holding a title.

Jericho takes a moment, then says that he’ll prove that Rey is a coward: he’ll accept Rey’s challenge for a rematch for the IC belt, but only if Rey gives up the mask if he loses. Rey hesitates, talks some trash, then accepts. Woot, it’s on!

Segment 8 [Singles Match]: CM Punk defeats Rey Mysterio by pin. Match was decent, with plenty of counters and fun spots like the Jeff/Edge match. Jericho was out on commentary; at the end of the match, Rey was tossed out of the ring. Behind the ref’s back, Jericho threw him face-first into the ring post. Rey managed to get back in the ring before the ten-count, but he ate a Go To Sleep a few seconds later.

After the match, Jeff came out and argued with the ref and Punk about Jericho’s attack, but to no avail. Punk retreated and held the belt over his head, drawing tons of boos.

Final Thoughts: Meh. Fun show, definitely “episodic TV,” but nothing that you’ll keep forever. A decent watch, especially on a DVR, though you’ll want to skip several sections, especially all the stupid hype packages for the commercial-free RAW on Monday.
