SD!: ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
Double Your Edge, Double Your Fun
June 6, 2009

No time for precaps. Here we go…!

Segment 1: We’re opening with The Cutting Edge, and there are ladders absolutely everywhere in and around the ring. Hell, the ramp is lined with ladders, and the stage is flanked with those 800-foot ladders that scare the hell out of me just looking at.

Edge pops out of the stage and lovingly looks at every ladder along the way, finally getting to the ring to address us with his title belt hanging above his head. Edge announces that his guest for The Cutting Edge is Jeff Hardy, who comes to the ring presently and makes a point of walking under every ladder he comes to.

Jeff is the first to talk, though he does so from the top of one of the ladders in the ring. He says that he’s quite comfortable there, and that’s exactly how things are going to on Sunday, where he’ll be sitting on top of a ladder and being a comfortable new champion. Crowd pops.

Edge says that it makes him comfortable to see an opponent in the ring—or in this case, up a ladder—pandering to the crowd and pretending he’s brave. Edge reminds him that the match will be dangerous, that it’s going to be exceptionally violent due to their history. Edge then uses visual aids on the ladder next to Jeff’s, saying that when Jeff gets “to here”—and he climbs the ladder a couple steps—Edge will knock him down—and Edge descends. Edge continues that Jeff will try his comebacks, and will get a little higher, and a little higher… but that Edge will keep knocking him down.

Edge promises that after he knocks Jeff down for the last time, he’ll climb all the way up… and to punctuate it, he climbs it all the way, so he and Jeff are both sitting on ladders facing each other. Yeah, I’d be scared as hell.

Jeff says that Edge is all talk, that the match will be a must-own for people’s collections. He admits he’s a risk-taker and lives in the moment, but that living in the moment will be his salvation at the PPV.

Edge says that it better be his salvation, because… Then he bops Jeff in the head with the hanging title. Jeff didn’t really sell it, looking more irritated and confused than hurt. So Edge smacked him again, this time stunning Jeff. Edge then kicked the ladder, sending Jeff into the ropes, he tumbled over to the mats outside the ring. Edge then walked away, holding the title up, without his music playing him off.

Segment 2 [Singles Match]: John Morrison defeats Shelton Benjamin by pin. Damn fine match here, as usual with SB involved. It was a somewhat quick match, with SB getting the early advantage and doing a lot of leg-targeted offense. JM remembered to sell the knee whenever he went on the offense, including trying to do a one-legged springboard roundhouse kick (that missed). JM managed to gather himself enough to hit the Starship Pain, though, and take the win.

Pre-Segment 3: Chris Jericho hits the ring to talk. He tells Rey Mysterio to be afraid… afraid that he’ll get his face revealed and show everyone how many times he was beaten with the ugly stick. Blah blah blah, fans are hypocrites too, blah blah, Rey is a coward for wearing a mask, blah blah, you all suck because you like him, blah blah, I’m going to win the match and Intercontinental Title.

And he gets interrupted by R-Truth’s entrance music. R-Truth does his whole entrance, and asks Jericho too what’s up. Jericho isn’t very happy about being interrupted, and that he refuses to have anyone interrupt “his” show, and he isn’t done talking.

Truth replies that Jericho is done, and he’s about to lay some “truth” on Jericho right now! (Get it? Because “truth” is his name, and it’s what he’s doing right now! That’s so clever!) Apparently, R isn’t happy for the way Jericho insults people, and that he’s not being a badass for it, and… uh… I’m not really sure where R was going with it, and I’m not sure he knew, as he just kinda petered off and goosed the crowd into screaming the word “truth.” Whatever.

Segment 3 [Singles Match]: Chris Jericho defeats R-Truth by pin. Match was decent. There were a couple decent spots, such as an early one where Jericho was outside the ring. He wasn’t paying attention, so Truth went to the ropes and did a vaulting… uh… well, it was like a body press, but it wasn’t a crossbody, it was a vertical one, I guess. Thing was, Truth’s angle on the dive was pretty scary… Think Taker’s dive on Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania and you’ll know the angle I’m talking about.

Endgame was pretty cool too. It started off with Jericho trying one of his signature monkey flips. It was toward the corner, and Truth saved himself by landing on the middle rope. From there, he hesitated, then did a springboard body press… directly into Jericho’s waiting arms for a Codebreaker. The Codebreaker itself looked just a tad sloppier than usual, but it was due to the bizarre circumstances that led to it rather than anything against Jericho. All in all, it was an awesome spot, practically came out of nowhere, and gave Jericho the W.

Post-Segment 3: As Jericho heads up the ramp in victory, Rey Mysterio bursts out from the back and assaults Jericho. Jericho eats a dozen punches before refs come in and peel him off. Rey retreats up the ramp as Jericho retreats around the ramp… so Rey runs and does his Senton (is that what it’s called?) so Jericho’s head and shoulders hit the concrete. Good moral victory there.

Segment 4 [Singles Match]: CM Punk defeats Umaga by pin. Match was decent, but without any unusual spot or anything. Match ended when Umaga got frustrated for not putting Punk away (Punk dodged the Ass-To-Mouth), so he turned and grabbed his strap. The ref warned him to put it down or be disqualified. Umaga refused, ref started counting to five. Punk took this opportunity to run over and hit the Go To Sleep, which was rather visually impressive.

Pre-Segment 5: Gail Kim? Melina? ON THE SAME TEAM???

Segment 5 [6-Diva Tag Match]: Layla, Michelle McCool, & Alicia Fox defeat My Melina, Gail Kim, and Eve Torres. Waaahhh, they lost!!!

Match was all right, I guess… Gail was FIP, My Melina got the hot tag (to almost complete apathy), and proceeded to clean house. Her awesome tear was interrupted by Fox. As My Melina argued with Fox about it, Eve and Gail ran around the ring to assault Fox. This distraction allowed Michelle to kick My Melina in the back of the head, followed by Layla hitting a neckbreaker to end it.

Oh, did I mention that Maria was the guest referee? Yeah, no one cared.

Segment 6 [Singles Match]: Khali (w/ Translator) defeats Dolph Ziggler by pin. Defining moment of the match: they were outside, with Dolph’s back against the ring post. Khali went in for a slap, missed, and wound up slapping the steel post. Khali then started selling the bicep of the other arm. The rest of the match was pretty downhill from there.

Segment 7 [Singles Match]: Edge defeats Rey Mysterio by pin. Match was good, but nothing noteworthy, until the endgame. Don’t get me wrong, both guys did great; it’s just that they kept things relatively simple, not really doing anything amazing or off the wall. At the end, Rey did an enzuiguri kick to put Edge in the 619 position. Rey hit it successfully, but when he tried his vaulting springboard splash, Edge rolled out of the way. Rey hopped up to his feet, but ate a well-timed Spear, and that was all she wrote.

Post-Segment 7: As Rey continued laying the in ring, Edge pulled up a ladder from under the ring. He slid in and readied it, but Jeff came down to make the save, slamming a steel chair into the ladder, which I guess drove the ladder into Edge’s sternum. Jeff then set the ladder up in the corner, doing his leapfrog leg drop, and jacked Edge’s belt as he posed in the corner.

Recommendation: Meh. Certainly doesn’t make me excited at all for the PPV, and the show in general wasn’t much of anything. Pass.
