OO RAW RECAP
International Incident
November 23, 2015

by Rick Scaia
Exclusive to OOWrestling.com

In addition to being the Survivor Series, last night was the final episode of "Last Week Tonight" for over two months.... definitely cause for feeling down, because after all the late night shake-ups of the past year, we've reached a place where John Oliver's show is the best of the bunch. And it's not even close (and he only works once a week; d'oh).

But today is the start of a three-day work week that will feature not only plenty of delightful food and drink.... but also the Dayton Flyers competing in one of ESPN's holiday tournaments. As a bonus, the way the brackets are set up, it is entirely possible for the Flyers to face our two greatest historical archnemeses: Notre Dame and Eggsaiver. Us Catholics just do not get along when it comes to our basketball!

Throw in the fact that the Foo Fighters also went and released a surprise free EP (three-fifths of it is pretty sweet!), and I'm calling that two shots of happy versus one shot of sad.

In other words: don't screw up my mojo, WWE! Here's hoping this RAW doesn't suck:

Opening Video Package for the Benefit of Those with ADD: and if you've already forgotten what happened less than 24 hours ago, you've got it bad.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR THEATRE

No opening theme/pyro/etc, and instead we just slam cut to the inside of the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN, where Triple H and Stephanie are on their way to the ring. Steph is beaming, and for the first time that I recall, she also busts out her dad's ridiculous Bushwhacker Arm Flail to make sure we know just how happy and proud of herself she is after the Authority got their way last night.

They get to the ring and play a little good cop/bad cop, with Steph goosing cheers out of the crowd by welcoming them to what should be a great night of action. But then HHH spins the yarn about how Roman Reigns has no one to blame but himself for losing the WWE Title. Not once, but twice, Reigns rejected HHH's offer of friendship and respect.... first, he passed on a chance to advance directly to the finals of the tournament, and then again last night, when he impressed everybody -- including the Authority -- by still winning said tournament, but turning down HHH's congratulatory handshake.

HHH doesn't need to be Roman Reigns' friend.... but he needs to know he can trust the WWE Champion to play ball and represent the company and its best interests. So when Reigns declined the handshake and instead took a potshot by spearing HHH, he revealed he can not be trusted as the face of the company. So HHH called in Plan B... so now, he'd like the crowd to stand and welcome our new conquering hero, the WWE Champion.... SHEAMUS.

Out comes the new champ, who gets boos, and an enthusiastic "YOU LOOK STOO PID" chant. But Sheamus just keeps on smiling and dares them to keep it up, because nothing is ruining his night. When the crowd finally wears itself out, he puts himself over a the greatest and bravest man ever to step foot in a WWE ring, and mocks Roman Reigns for being a  poor excuse of a man who could only hold on to the title for 5 minutes and 15 seconds before falling to the Brogue Kick.

After he wraps up his spiel, Reigns decides to head to the ring to offer his take on things... as he steps into the ring, Sheamus once again brings up the 5 minute thing, but Reigns says he'll keep this even shorter than 5 minutes, cuz he's got just one thing to say: he wants his mandatory rematch, and he wants it tonight.

The crowd, which had been lukewarm to Reigns, suddenly perks up, and likes the sound of this. They even start chanting "YES! YES! YES!" which gets under Steph's skin as she declares that Reigns is in no position to demand anything, and he's crazy if he thinks the Authority is gonna do him any favors after he speared HHH last night.

Reigns response is to just look right past Stephanie, and ask "Hey, Hunter, so that's how we're gonna do this.  You gonna stand back there behind her, because you're scared of me?" Ooooooohhhhh, burn?

HHH takes the mic from Steph and says Reigns doesn't call the shots, HHH does... and in this case, HHH declares that Reigns will get his rematch, but he sure as hell ain't getting it tonight. HHH has other plans for him....

As if on cue, Rusev rolls into the ring behind Reigns and catches him with a blindside thrust kick. Sheamus adds a Brogue Kick, and all of a sudden, Reigns is in a heap, and Sheamus and Rusev are shaking hands with each other and with the Authority, so they're clearly all in cahoots..... huh. Wonder if Barrett gets in on this action to pick up on the "Euros" Faction that he been gelling before Rusev's injury?

The heels retreat to the stage, and as Reigns finally regains his senses, HHH reveals that later tonight, Reigns will face Rusev in a one-on-one match.... but he invites Sheamus to feel free to show up for a ringside seat, if he feels like it. So, ummmm, basically Trips is saying a 2-on-1 later tonight. Oh where oh where will Roman Reigns find somebody to be in his corner? [/hesaidknowingly]

THE DUDLEY BOYZ vs. BRAY WYATT & LUKE HARPER (w/ Erick Rowan and Braun Strowman)

The Wyatts lost last night, and a pre-match ramble by Bray indicates that any frustrations they have will be taken out upon the Dudleys. "We will break you in half, and show the world your insides." Ewwwwwww.

Bubba and Harper gets us started with some slobberknockery, which breaks in Bubba's favor after a minute or so. Then a minute or so of babyface domination, and Bray becomes audibly upset, calling for Harper to fight back, before finally just reaching into the ring to pull Harper out to ringside so they can regroup. Break in the action means we break for....

[ads]

Back, and Bray Wyatt is working over Devon Dudley... Cole & The Gang tell us that Bray's little pep talk, combined with some illegal triple teaming, helped the Wyatts gain control by foiling the WASSSUP Headbutt.

For several minutes, Devon's in the enemy corner, and Wyatt and Harper execute frequent tags... Devon finally gets separation by rolling out of the way of a Wyatt senton. Hot tag to Bubba. Harper in on the corresponding move.

Bubba dominates for about 45 seconds, but for the second time, the numbers game catches up to the Dudleys.... Rowan creates one distraction, Devon seems to have that handled, but then Strowman gets up on the apron to add another layer to it, and Bubba has to deal with it himself. As a result, when Bubba turns back, he walks right into a vicious lariat from Harper.

Bray ensures that Devon stays down, as Harper makes the pin.

Your Winners: Wyatt & Harper, via pinfall, in about 8 minutes. Well, there wasn't a whole lot to that. A glorified squash, designed to send the message that the Wyatts are still a mighty force, while banking on the notion of the Duds being teflon enough to take the beating while still remaining relevant in any tag title discussion. An extended 4-on-2 beatdown after the match underscored said message.

BECKY LYNCH vs. SASHA BANKS (w/ Tamina and Naomi)

Becky is flying solo, which doesn't seem to bode well for her chances... but let's see how this plays out.

Or maybe we won't have to wait long, as we fast-forward to the "mid-match" heel beatdown, and Sasha hits her turnbuckle double-knee strike and gets a near fall before the match is even one minute old. Some illegal double teaming for another near fall before it's 90 seconds old.  An arm-based rest hold by Sasha, and Becky powers out to start her comeback at about the 2 minute mark.

Becky manages to cinch in the Disarmer, but Tamina distracts the ref while Naomi pulled Sasha over for a rope break. Ref demands the break, Becky argues about the interference, Sasha with the schoolgirl roll-up for the pin.

Your Winner: Sasha Banks, via pinfall, in 3 minutes. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Begging Your Pardon, Cole: we cut to the announce table, where Cole uses Sasha's victory as an excuse to wonder aloud if she's just put herself next in line for a shot at Charlotte's Women's Title. But his wondering is cut off, as we hear Paige cutting in, from backstage. She pops up on the TitanTron, and says she's still next in line, because she never lost last night.... Cole tries to dispute this, but Paige supplies the video....

And indeed, it looks like Charlotte's hand might have been underneath the bottom rope as she applied the Figure Eight, last night. With only light prodding from JBL, Cole concedes the point, and just like that, it seems we're gonna get a Charlotte/Paige rematch.

NEW DAY ROCKS

Well, we've been hearing about the New Day's "One Year Anniversary Country Music Jamboree and Open Challenge" all night.... and now it's time to see if it's gonna be as awesome as it sounds like it should be. And for starters, they are all riding little toy hobby horses, which, naturally, all have horns, so they are actually unicorns. Delightful.

Big E has gotten extra into the spirit of things, with a cowboy hat, bandana, and bullrope. But it turns out, they're doing this all sarcastically.

Kofi says the New Day are turning one year old today, and their being forced to do it right here in the capitol of...... *gaauuuugggggghhhhh*  He can't actually bring himself to say it. Big E can't spit it out, either. Finally, Woods manages to reveal that they're being forced to celebrate this great day in the capital of Country Music, which is clearly the worst kind of music ever.

Kofi illustrates this by spitting out every country cliche, while Woods plays trombone. I won't bother explaining in any greater detail. Just go find the video on youtube. The mocking of country music also includes Woods singing "Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be booty," and other moments of true hilarity.

But then they get serious, and say that they intend to celebrate their anniversary by winning a big match, because NEW. DAYROCKS?

Nope, NEW. DAYSUCKS.

Making matters worse, the Lucha Dragons show up to answer the challenge, which is apparently not what the New Day had in mind, as they beg off and try to leave the ring.

But there will be no easy exit, as the Usos pop in to block their path. The Usos are interested in that open challenge, too. Kalisto says the Dragons had first dibs, but he still totally respects the Usos, so how about a Triple Threat?

The Usos are down with that idea, and hop up into the ring.... but Big E tells them all to cool it. They are ruining the New Day's big night. [Kofi: "SHAME!"] This was supposed to be about us, but you're making it about YOU ["SHAME!"] So as a result of their insubordination, this open challenge is hereby..... CANCELLED~!

Big E, Woods, and Kofi start laughing and try to make a graceful retreat.... but the Usos and Dragons decide to deliver a little 4-on-3 beatdown, instead. Maybe it didn't happen tonight, but the New Day are gonna get stuck in a multi-way stipulation match at the TLC and their indignation will be glorious to behold!

This Just In: Cole confirms that the powers that be have approved an immediate Charlotte/Paige rematch for the Womens' Title to take place later tonight.

[ads]

Backstage: Renee Young is standing by with Charlotte, who has just found out about her title defense later tonight. Charlotte keeps it short and sweet, and says she welcomes a chance to fight Paige again, and prove that what Paige calls "cheating" is really just a technicality, by replicating the same result.

NEVILLE vs. MARK HENRY

Mark Henry has switched between heel and face, and also between credible mid-carder and jobber, and also between active competitor and mysteriously absent so many times in the past year that I have no idea if we're supposed to view this as monster heel versus flashy underdog, or  high flying up and comer versus washed up veteran, or something else entirely.

Luckily, they don't make us wait. Henry rag-dolled Neville for a minute, then Neville caught Henry charging him in the corner with a kick and hit the Red Arrow.

Your Winner: Neville, via pinfall, in 90 seconds flat. The match was a big fat zero, but they threw two utterly random elements in there that might be leading to something.... Henry seemed genuinely upset with himself, but still shook Neville's hand; and backstage, Miz watched the whole spectacle on a monitor, and seemed to be crafting a master plan.

Backstage: Stardust is in his celestial lair, and as only he can, he rants and raves in a way that reveals we can forget about Cesaro for a while, and now, it's time to focus on Goldust. Then, Titus O'Neil pops in, claiming to have taken a wrong turn.... but then he feigns being impressed by Stardust's lair, which Stardust naively believes. The punchline is Titus randomly barking right in Stardust's ear and then scurrying away. Before we go to commercials, Cole reveals that this is all in advance of a six-man tag (Goldust/PTPs vs. Stardust/Ascension) that's come up next....

[ads]

GOLDUST & THE PRIME TIME PLAYERS vs. STARDUST & THE ASCENSION

Goldust starts for his team, so Stardust's first action is to tag out; he got his fill of his brother last night, I guess. So instead, it's Viktor who gets to have his ass kicked for several minutes, as the faces make frequent tags and more or less dominate.

With Darren Young in for the faces, the heels utilize a blind tag spot to gain control. Young stays focused on Viktor, but Konnor is the legal man who pearl harbors him. DYoung is now your Face in Peril for a bit. As is mandated by law, though, he eventually makes a hot tag... in this case, to Titus.

A Pier Sixer breaks out, and when it boils back down to the legal men, Clash of the Titus lands on Viktor, and it's all over.

Your Winners: Goldust and the Prime Time Players, via pinfall, in 5 minutes or so. I can state, with authority, that this is a thing that happened.

A THOUGHTFUL REFLECTION ON BORDER SECURITY. OR NOT.

US Champion Alberto del Rio and Zeb Colter head to the ring, and in deference to Zeb's Delicate Condition, they take up a post in front of the announce desk, where Zeb declares that it's time for a State of the Meximerican Union Address.

Zeb's story is that, a month ago, he unveiled this glorious vision for an inclusive nation of Meximerica, and invited anyone to join him and Alberto. But instead, Americans did what America does best: they bitched and moaned and turned into a bunch of haters and dividers. Then Alberto rants in Spanish, apparently providing a translation.

Zeb continues, saying that they all had their chances, but now, the borders of Meximerica are closed, and they will accepting no further refugees. This time, when Alberto grabs the mic, he doesn't bother with Spanish, he just says "To hell with all of you."

Enter Jack Swagger, who stands on the opposite side of the ring, and says he can't believe he used to look up to Zeb Colter, who genuinely was a great American Patriot... but now he's just a bitter, out of touch, old man. Alberto hops up into the ring and says Swagger can't talk about Zeb that way. Swagger says this is America, and he's entitled to voice his opinion... and if Alberto's got a problem with that, he can step up and do something about it.

Swagger hops up into the ring, too, and is ready for a fight.... but ADR is not, and he immediately backs down and exits the ring. As he and Zeb roll up the ramp, Swagger tags the segment by getting the arena to stand up, and in a loud clear voice, say "WE. THE PEOPLE." And that just annoys the hell out of Zeb, but he and ADR continue their retreat, to fight another day.

CHARLOTTE vs. PAIGE (WWE Women's Title Match)

These two had a very good match last night, but one that was hamstrung by WWE's ill-advised Reid Flair Gambit, along with a kind of wankery crowd. We've got a fresh crowd, and a new narrative focus (the missed call by the ref), so if they replicate the effort, this could click quite nicely. Lilian provides full boxing-style ring intros, too, to underscore that this is a big deal.

They lock up and jockey for position, with neither woman gaining an advantage. They wind up backing into a corner, where Paige declines to break clean, and instead bitchslaps Charlotte. Charlotte responds in kind, and wins the slap fight. Charlotte takes it down to the mat, forcing Paige to crawl for a rope break.

Paige chickenshits the hell out of things, refusing to rejoin the fight until Charlotte goes over to womanfully pull her back into the middle of the ring. Charlotte continues on offense for a bit, until she decides to go up top... Paige knocks her leg out from under, and Charlotte lands hard.

Heel beatdown in full effect, leading up to a bow-and-arrow submission by Paige. Charlotte fights it, and gets to the ropes. Doesn't faze Paige, though, as she just follows up with knee strikes for a near fall. Then Paige gives Charlotte a taste of her own medicine, using Charlotte's head scissors against her. Then, after a modified suplex in which Charlotte's knee contorted, Paige moved her focus to Charlotte's left leg.

Paige hit the same leg-decimating suplex a second time. Announcers theorize that the Figure Eight may now be off the table, and if so, how can Charlotte possibly win. Paige busts out the same Super Mega Ultra Half Crab from last night, doing more damage to the leg. Charlotte punches her way out of that hold, but as both women step back, they both load up a front kick, and they land simultaneously.

Both women down, and somebody decides this would be the right time to break for....

[ads]

Back, and it appears that it was back and forth for the entirety of the break, and that's ongoing. Paige with a mount-and-punch. Near fall. Charlotte up and lands knife-edge chops. Near fall. Paige with a stiff kick. Charlotte with a sleeper. Paige gets the rope break, but Charlotte gets a running start and spears Paige through the rope.

It was a bit sloppy, to say the least. But it's a necessary spot, as it sets up the finish, which has both women outside the ring while the ref counts. Charlotte starts to get back into the ring. Paige reaches up, and uses the trunks to pull her down. Paige tries to crawl into the ring, and Charlotte returns the favor. Meantime, the ref gets to 10.

Your Winner: none, via double count-out, in about 12 minutes.  Not quite as crisp as last night, but at least the fans' attention only really strayed once (some assclowns tried to do the Yankee Stadium role call for JBL and Cole, but found no takers). But the mission here seems to have been to get Charlotte and Paige to another PPV match. Which they accomplished.

After the Match: the brawl continued, and Paige won it. After ramming Charlotte into the steel ring steps, she cinched in the PTO on the announce desk until officials swarmed to break it up. Luckily, the intensity of the post-match seemed to wipe out the memory of the sloppy spear spot.

A REAL THING THAT SOMEBODY DECIDED TO PUT ON TV

For the second time tonight, a heel hits the ring to taunt the fans of Music City, TN.... it's Heath Slater, who talks trash about various country acts, and promises to class the place up with a special performance by The One Man Rock Band.

He elaborately clears his throat, but before he can bust into song, Ryback's music hits... Slater hangs back at first, but as soon as Ryback gets into the ring, Slater positions himself and wallops Ryback with his guitar. EL KABONG~!

Except: not so much. Ryback no-sells it. And beats the crap out of Slater, ending with the Shellshock.

Welp, that was certainly one way to spend 4 minutes. Ahem.

[ads]

DEAN AMBROSE & DOLPH ZIGGLER vs. KEVIN OWENS & TYLER BREEZE (w/ Summer Rae)

We get back from the break, and all four men have already entered the ring, so apparently we're running a bit late. Gee whiz, I'm so glad we made sure to get that pointless Heath Slater cameo in. Bell rings, and Ziggler and Owens start, with Owens gaining the upper hand. When Ziggler is able to dive to his corner and tag Ambrose in, however, Owens immediately retreats and tags Breeze into the match.

Owens has a habit of walking out on tag matches, and just like that, it seems a possibility, here.... but once Ziggler tags back in, Owens decides to play along. Owens and Breeze work well together as a team for a time compressed heel beatdown on Ziggler. But when ZZiggler hits a flash enzuigiri on Owens, he gets separation, and is able to make the tag to Ambrose.

Owens immediately tags out, and leaves Breeze to get his ass kicked. Owens stands on the apron vaguely shouting support, but that's it. Ambrose dominates until he decides to go chase down Owens.... Breeze strikes from behind, and gets a few cheapshots, but then Ziggler joins back in to punk Owens. It's Breeze's turn to get distracted by the extracurriculars, and Ambrose hits him with the Dirty Deeds.

Your Winners: Ambrose and Ziggler, via pinfall, in 4 minutes. Ultra time compression on display, so the match was essentially substance-free. But the story got through loud and clear: Ambrose wants to fight Owens, but Owens wants to make him wait. Those two, with 20 minutes, and plus tables or ladders, at the PPV will be worth said wait.

[ads]

ROMAN REIGNS vs. RUSEV (w/ Sheamus)

I had Ambrose pegged as the obvious cornerman to off-set Sheamus.... but not so, at least not to start. Power vs. power, but things get a little bowling-shoe-ish, if you take my meaning, as the two seem to miscommunicate early on and just awkwardly collide in the middle of the ring. The crowd sort of groans, and any chances of getting them engaged from the outset are lost.

The silence is deafening as they go through some back and forth stuff, and then, things spill outside, where Reigns takes over. Rusev meets the ring steps and the barricade, and Reigns decides to get into a shouting match with Sheamus as we break for our final set of...

[ads]

Back, and we rejoin the action -- or lack there-of -- to see Rusev working a chinlock. Apparently, the distraction by Sheamus had a hand in turning the tide. And when Reigns finally manages to power out of the chinlock, Rusev causes a distraction of his own, allowing Sheamus to get physical and punch Reigns right in the face.

Rusev continues a methodical beatdown, as Sheamus gets more active an verbose around ringside, which finally starts to get some of the live crowd onboard with the match.

An audible "LETS GO ROH MAN" chant inspires Reigns to power out of a second chinlock, and this time, it's the start of a for real comeback. Sheamus interferes again, but this time, the ref catches it, and ejects him. It's one-on-one, and Reigns snaps off a Samoan Drop for a near fall. They trade punches, and Reigns backs Rusev inot the turnbuckle for the 10 short clotheslines....

But then Reigns steps back and gets a running start.... and he runs into a thrust kick by Rusev. Reigns kicks out at two. Rusev heads up top. Reigns catches him. Reigns sets up a superplex, but Rusev punches out of it, sending Reigns falling backwards. Rusev flies and hits a top rope headbutt.

Reigns kicks out at two, sending Rusev into a frustrated hissy fit. When Rusev finally remembers that his finisher is the Camel Clutch, Reigns has had plenty of time to recover.... Rusev walks into a Superman Punch. Reigns crawls --- slloooowwwwlllyyyy -- to make the cover, and Rusev kicks out at 2.

Reigns steps back and calls for the spear. Rusev sees it, and rolls out of the ring. Reigns rolls out on the other side, and gets a running start, intending to intercept Rusev with a spear on the floor. But Rusev is one step ahead, and Reigns sprints right into a superkick.

Rusev introduces Reigns to the barricade and ring post and other implements, and finally rolls Reigns back into the ring when the ref's count gets to 9. Reigns manages to catch Rusev with a knee strike as Rusev steps back into the ring.

The match immediately spills back outside the ring, where Reigns sets up and hits the Drive-By.... and when he turns to celebrate, he's met with a Bullhammer Elbow from King Barrett~!

Your Winner: Roman Reigns, via disqualification, in 15 minutes. Really slow to start, but the last 4-5 minutes were pretty hot. And I gotta admit, I had this pegged for "Hey, Rusev's back. Now, watch him be rendered immediately irrelevant by a predictable loss to Superman Reigns." And that's not what happened, so Barrett's run-in may have caused a cheap DQ, but it was a pleasant surprise.

After the Match: Sheamus joined in for a 3-on-1 Evil Foriegner Beatdown, and for a while, Reigns was in bad shape... but then Barrett got greedy, and threw a steel chair into the ring, only to have it be intercepted by Reigns. Reigns started swinging, and the heels decided to call it a night. Bad guys make a full retreat, and then Reigns' music hits so he can celebrate as we fade to black.

And so ends the show... strong finish, I'll grant that. But other than the effective throughline of Sheamus, Rusev, and Barrett reforming as Authority Muscle, it seemed like nothing happened to change the trajectory of a single story.

It was already pretty clear that the New Day were gonna get a multi-way match at TLC, that Paige would get another shot at Charlotte, and that Ambrose and Swagger were clearly #1 contenders for secondary titles. In other words, this was water-treading all around.

Worse, it was bland-as-hell water treading, with no in-ring action of any value until the last 5 minutes of the show, and non-wrestling moments being aggressively flaccid (I mean, Slater and ADR/Swagger were just pointless as all hell; even the New Day seemed to overstay its welcome for the first time, as their segment limped to a climax, too).

As a final coup de suck, WWE opted to make this one of the highest concetrations of zero-value-added filler in a long time. Somewhere around 10-15 minutes of replays/hype/nonsense is something I'm conditioned to deal with.... but tonight's show had double that, easily. We had two different Survivor Series recap packages (one for the WWE Title, one for Taker/Wyatts), and each one got played two different times. We had two different replay packages of the opening segment, one mid-show, and one before the main event. Hell, we had a dumbass Hardee's Paid Product Placement that lasted 3 goddamned minutes.

It adds up to being a show with an indefensibly sparse amount of shit I would have watched in real time if you gave me an unlimited time shift to work with. I'd almost rather watch WWE serve up wall-to-wall eyeball-riveting terrible horseshit so that I could get nice and angry.... sitting here, just being vacant and bored and annoyed at the sheer nothingness being shot into my eyeholes is actually worse.

Since I do believe that the last taste a show leaves in our mouths is more important than that which preceeds the final segment, I'll not give WWE a failing grade for tonight's show. But they officially owe us some extra credit work before the end of the semester. Tonight gets a D-plus.

Have a happy Thanksgiving, my fellow Americans. Have a pleasent rest of the week, the rest of you, and I'll see you in seven!
