OO RAW RECAP
The Many Faces of Jacobs
September 21, 2015

by Rick Scaia
Exclusive to OOWrestling.com

The new TV season is now fully and truly joined.... which means it's now time for me to engage in Scaia Family Propaganda~!

Specifically, everybody out there should watch "Limitless" on CBS, debuting tomorrow (Tuesday) night at 10pm (eastern). It's a continuation of the movie of the same name, and for you ladies out there: Bradley Cooper WILL be making sporadic guest appearances!

But more importantly, my Hollywood Brother is one of the producer/writers for the show, so it'll also be, you know?, good. Obviously, I blazed the trail for Scaia Boyz getting famous and rich, but I think it's time to admit that I should now cede my family supremacy.... even my Texas Brother (the one who was in the car wreck, and I spent six months in Texas tending to his issues earlier this year) is back on the air, and is now synidcated on a new CNN/Westwood national network, to boot. I'm dragging ass in last place, at this point!

But it's OK. My area of mastery may be quite specific, but my mastery of that area is so utterly complete and profound that I put my brothers to shame in that respect. I also put the other so-called wrestling pundits to shame, which is why you're here.

So I'll quit wasting your time, and tell you what happened on tonight's just completed edition of RAW:

No Opening/Theme/Pyro/Etc., just a cold open in Laredo, TX, where Cole & The Gang provide a perfunctory welcome, while the Wyatt Family are already on their way to the ring.

FIGHT, WYATTS, FIGHT

Once in the ring, Bray Wyatt grabs a mic, and calls out Roman Reigns, saying that he (Bray) warned Reigns with his words and his action, but Reigns went out looking for partners, and once again came up short. His "brother" Dean Ambrose isn't the answer. Chris Jericho sure wasn't the answer. They ALL. FALL. DOWN.

That's when Reigns' music hits, and he makes his entrance through the audience. He's here, solo, against all three Wyatts. Reigns gets a mic of his own, and says it's time to bring this thing full circle. This was never about family. This was always about Roman Reigns and Bray Wyatt, and Reigns invites Bray to send his "bigguns" to the swamp so they cna do this one-on-one.

Bray initially declines, but Reigns keeps the trashtalk going until Bray does dismiss Harper and Stromann... there's no ref, so it isn't a match, but it is a FIGHT.

Reigns and Wyatt go at it, while Harper and Stromann  slowly walk up the ramp, as if  to allow the one-on-one... but as soon as Reigns hits the Superman punch, both big men return, and attack Reigns. It's not a match, so it's also not a DQ.... the 3-on-1 beatdown continues.

But only for a few seconds, because Dean Ambrose runs in to help even the odds. Despite the 2-on-3 disadvantage, Reigns and Ambrose do OK for a couple minutes. When they finally wind up on the short end of the stick, the crowd chants for "WHY TWO JAY,"

Sadly, there is no Jericho, there is only Zuuuuuuuul. Errrrrr,  Orton. Yep, after a delightful two weeks without Randall, Orton is back to get revenge on the Wyatts. With the numbers now at 3-on-3, the good guys get the moral victory by triple-teaming Stromann until he tumbles out of the ring (after already dispatching Bray and Harper).

Reigns, Ambrose, and Orton stand tall to close the segment.

Opening Video Package for the Benefit of Those with ADD: instead of kicking off the show, the zero value-add recap package airs 20 minutes into the show. Nice try, WWE, but OO still doesn't recap recaps.

Backstage: Seth Rollins is pacing, and finally gets up the nerve to enter the Authority's dressing room.... he finally does and (after a distractingly terrible choice of camera work), walks into the dressing room to complain about how Kane attacked him last night and.... then he trails off....

Because HHH and Steph aren't in the dressing room, but Kane is. Korporate Kane, no mask. Seth is completely flustered, because he remembers Kane being all dicky and demon-y and beating the shit out of him 24 hours ago at NoC. But this Kane is wearing a suit and claims not to know what the hell Seth is talking about. Kane says he's finally healed up after an injury, and back on the job, lending a hand to the Authority when he can.

To that end, he had a TOTALLY cool idea for Seth, and so Kane set up Rollins' US Title rematch against John Cena, and that match happens TONIGHT. Pretty sweet, huh? Rollins has no idea what to make of split personality Kane, so he kind just says "Yeah" and quietly back out of the office...

I'll say this: WWE has flipped Kane between Demon and Korporate so many times that it's lost all meaning. But the one thing they've never done is have him do BOTH gimmicks at the same time, while professing to not knowing that he's doing it. This could be fun.... Korporate Kane and Seth Rollins could be every bit as fun an Odd Couple as Demon Kane and Daniel Bryan were, if you're willing to play it all slow and subtle-like. [Wouldn't it be awesome if they go slow with it, and somehow, they build to Daniel Bryan's return using this story.... Bryan wants his WWE Title back; remember HE NEVER LOST IT, he was stripped! Demon Kane helps Bryan, Korporate Kane helps Rollins, and hilarity/drama ensue!]

NEVILLE & THE LUCHA DRAGONS vs. STARDUST & THE ASCENSION

Rematch from the PPV Preshow.... early flub by Sin Cara is effortlessly covered by Stardust, who tags in to generate some cheap heat and a "COH DEE" chant. Then, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

In this case, that means almost a spot-for-spot do-over of last night's match, right up to JBL calling out to ESPN Jonathan Coachman, telling him to get ready for a Top 10 highlight when Neville teases a top rope move.... only to have the heels catch him off guard.

With Neville tumbling to the floor, there's a break in the action, so we break for....

[ads]

Back, and the heels are firmly in control, as the replay of last night continues. Nevilles the face in peril, as the Ascension execute frequent tags and, frankly, look better/more believable than they have at any point since debuting almost a year ago. Working as Stardust's goons suits them.

HOt tag finally comes to Kalisto,a nd he cleans house. When the heels opt to cheat, it breaks into a Pier Sixer, and Neville is able to effectively counter Stardust and Viktor, while Kalisto hits Salina del Sol on Konnor for the clean pinfall win.

Your Winners: Lucha Dragons and Neville, via pinfall, in about 10 minutes. So, uhhhh, the meat and potatoes was basically a completely do-over of last night, but then, when thematch broke down, the faces won it, instead of the heels. Not sure what to think. Sometimes, I think that's because WWE doesn't know what they want us to think, so they go with this silly even-steven booking where NOBODY comes out looking strong. D'oh.

[ads]

Backstage: Rollins is still pacing, this time in a random hallway.... and he just so happens to bump into HHH and Steph, as they arrive (late) to the arena. Yep, the Authority, showing up an hour late to RAW. That sounds about right, for all the wrong reasons....

Rollins tells them about Korporate Kane's schizophrenia, and HHH/Steph claim ignorance of the return of DOO Kane.... but they do tell Rollins that if he's booked for a US Title match, he should get ready for it, and then they'll sort the rest out later.... Rollins is not exactly pleased by their lack of action, but if he's already on Kane's bad side, his instinct is that he better not piss off the Authority, too, so he slinks away....

RYBACK vs. BO DALLAS

Kevin Owens shows up to sit in on guest commentary. Bo adds in a little pre-match spiel, in which he says that he knows Ryback BO-lieved.... but he BO-lieved that he was better than Kevin Owens, and he was wrong. So it's not just about BO-lieving, it's about BO-lieving the truth.

Then, Ryback kicked his ass, because we're all adults here, and we're not going to pretend this was something it wasn't.

Your Winner: Ryback, via pinfall, in about 3 minutes. Nothing to see here.

After the Match: Kevin Owens tries to sneak attack Ryback, but Ryback fights him off, and Owens scurries away. Looks like we're slow-burning this IC Rematch all the way to the HiaC PPV....

TO BE THE WOMAN, YOU GOT TO BEAT THE WOMAN~!

To celebrate Charlotte's title win at NoC, Ric Flair hits the ring to MC his daughter's Championship Celebration....Flair prefaces the celebration with a bit of self-aggrandizing bluster about how he first baptized Laredo with his partying ways back in 1972, before any of us were even a twinkle in our dad's eye. [Well, easily before *I* was.... I guess there might be some geezers out there in OO Nation who were alive in the early 70s.]

Flair fights off a "THANK YOU RIC" chant, though, and says this isn't really about him....this is about his greatest legacy: this is about his baby girl, Charlotte. More important than his own first title win, more gratifying than his farewell match agaisnt Shawn Michaels.... watching his daughter win the most prestigious title in women's wrestling last night was the greatest moment of Ric's life.

And now, he wants to share that with everybody.... he brings Charlotte (and Paige and Becky) to the ring, and they do a stereo WHOOOOO! to kick things off.

Then Charlotte takes the mic and makes everybody a little weepy as she says, "I've been watching you since I was a little girl sitting out in those seats, dreaming about maybe some day growing up to be like you. And then, I got into the business, and I realized how hard you had to work to be any good at this job. So if I've somehow managed to be even half as good as you were, dad, then I'm twice as good as I ever thought I could be, and thank you for setting the bar so high, dad."

Some nice words for Becky, about how Becky keeps her down to earth. Then, some nice words about Paige, because Paige did all this first and paved the way.....

And then Paige does full-on Lady Pipe-Bomb... I will not transcribe, I'll just do the lazy internetty thing and embed the video, because it would lose something in the translation....

Then Team Bella shows up to pick the carcass after Paige leaves. It turns out that Nikki has some news.... right now, Charlotte has to face Brie. And later on, at a time of Nikki's choosing, Charlotte will lose the title back to her (Nikki).... yadda yadda yadda and so forth.

Per usual, by "right now," Nikki meant, after these....

[ads]

CHARLOTTE (w/ Becky Lynch) vs. BRIE BELLA (w/ Nikki and Alicia)

Ric evaporated at some point, so Charlotte's at a disadvantage, numbers-wise.... and more or less, she morphs straight into the mid-match heel beatdown segment, when Brie goes back to working the left leg that was injured last night. Time compression is in full effect, but at least this time, it has a basis in reality, by building on a pre-existing condition.

The "mid-match" heel beatdown continues all the way to the four minute mark, when Charlotte fights out of a half-crab to hit a standing enzuigiri. Her fire up leads to a spear in short order, and then, the Figure Eight is locked in.

Your Winner: Charlotte, via submission, in 5 minutes. Pretty one-dimensional, not unlike last night, leading up to a less than 60 second face comeback.  But last night, they did essentially this exact same match at 12 minutes.... it felt a lot more right at 5 minutes.

[ads]

MARK HENRY vs. SHEAMUS

So, ummmm, Henry wins some feats of strength to forestall the inevitable. But then: the inevitable.

Your Winner: Sheamus, via squash pinfall, in 2 minutes. I can state, with authority, that this is a thing that happened.

[ads]

Backstage: The Authority finally make it back to their office.... yep, they get to their office TWO HOURS AFTER THE SHOW STARTED. That's all kinds of hilarious in a way that's not supposed to be hilarious, when you consider how badly mismanaged WWE is. But I digress....

They find Kane in their office, and he's all cheerful and "Hey, great to be back and healed from my leg injury and back on the job." As soon as HHH and Steph mention last night, Kane claims ignorance, and says he wasn't at the show last night, he just glad to be back as DOO.

HHH and Steph decide to play along with Kane delusion, to a degree.... but when push comes to shove, Steph puts her hand out and says "Give it back." Kane gives her five. "No, I don't want five. I WANT YOUR MASK BACK!"

"My what? Oh, yeah, that. The last time I saw that mask, I gave it to you, Stephanie. Hand to god, last time I saw it. If you managed to lose it, though, that could be a pretty serious problem. For you." BIG CHEERS~!

On that punchline, Kane walks away, and Steph and HHH share a concerned glance.

Elsewhere Backstage: Paige bumps into Nattie backstage. The very same Nattie that she badmouthed in her pipebomb..... "Oh, so you DO still work here. What a surprise." Nattie confirms that not only does she still work here, but she's just as frustrated as Paige at being held back and left behind.... but she also knows how this business works, and that there are certain things you don't do. And what Paige just did to Charlotte was a pretty awful way to behave. Meantime, Nattie is gonna take out her frustrations in a match.... she's gonna go one-on-one with Naomi later tonight, and that's how she's gonna put her name back in the mix. She suggests Paige take some notes.

Paige is, predictably, not all that interested in hearing Nattie's advice, and just rolls her eyes....

THE DUDLEY BOYZ & DOLPH ZIGGLER vs. THE NEW DAY & RUSEV (w/ Eggsavier Woods and Lana)

The New Day preface the match with a promo.... Woods no longer has his Ruffio hair, but he DOES have an Evidence Baggie, with some table shrapnel, which he claims was extracted from his buttocks after last night's Dudley Violation. Then Big E piles on with some outstandingly nonsensical right-wing nonsense about building a wall around Dudleyville to protect our borders and our Uhmurhican values.

During ring intros for the good guys, we get a big reveal: the Dudleys rematch for the tag titles will NOT wait until Hell in a Cell. It's gonna come on the MSG House Show (broadcast on the WWE Network), in 12 days, on Saturday, October 3. Nice.

Ziggler and Kofi start for a little pace... Ziggler wins it, and tags in Devon. Devon slows it down to play the power card. That works for a bit. But then Kofi gets separation and tags in Big E. Bubba in on the corresponding move. And then it all breaks down... the heels end up regrouping oustide the ring while the faces huddle inside. And we break for....

[ads]

Back, and it seems the heels have gained control, but Ziggler is in mid-fire-up. Stinger Splash and neckbreaker on Big E... but then Woods works a little Boner Mojo, and Ziggler is distracted. Just like that, he's Ricky Morton.

As E and Kofi trade mudhole stomps, Eggsavier does the up and down scales. And then, when Rusev tags in, Eggsaiver plays something that is somewhat approximate to Rusev's low-brass-heavy entrance theme while Rusev does his dirty sinful business on Dolph. Awesome.

Then, just for shits and giggles, he invites Summer to work his slide. PG-Filthy~!

Not to be lost in the hilarity is the fact that Ziggler is getting his ass positively kicked for a really long period of time, here, and doing it well. Getting his ass convincing kicked is one of Dolph's strengths. Finally, after Dolph is the smush-meat in a Rusev/Big E sandwich splash, he's able to get separation......

Hot tag to Bubba, corresponding move to Kofi. Advantage: Bubba. Bubba kicks the shit out of Kofi, and basically LETS Kofi crawl to his corner to tag in Rusev. Bubba wins that, too, but the heels come in, and it breaks down into a brawl.

The faces win the brawl, and the Dudleys tag Ziggler back in to deliver the WHASSUP! headbutt.... but then it goes south. Big E breaks up the headbutt, then Woods interferes illegally to distract Ziggler. Ziggler does manage to superkick Woods (in a nice touch, Summer makes a big show of "saving" the trombone as Woods tumbles off the apron).... but Rusev, the legal man, recovers and blindsides Ziggler with a superkick of his own.

Your Winner: Rusev & the New Day, via pinfall, in about 15 minutes. Really fun match with enough blended comedy and drama to just hit all the taste buds. Nothing of cosmic importance was settled, and yet, a good time was had by all.

[ads]

NATALYA vs. NAOMI (w/ Sasha Banks & Tamina)

Naomi's all laughing and dismissive as things start, because she's got back-up. By Nattie's got skills, so she's actually able to take the fight to Naomi in the opening moments. It's only after a bit of playing possum in a corner that Naomi's able to gain control for the time-compressed "mid-match" beatdown.

While Naomi's beatdown is playing out, we get a sneak peak of Paige watching the match backstage, and her feelings aren'te quite clear. If she's happy to see Nattie getting her ass kicked, she's not showing it.

Nattie fires up by reversing her way into a Butt Drop (an Atomic Drop without the knee), then a runover into a low dropkick to a nice pop.... but then Sasha and Tamina both hopped up on the apron. As one distracted the ref, the other distracted Nattie.... Naomi hit a quick butt-butt for the pin.

Your Winner: Naomi, via pinfall, in 3 minutes.  So much for Nattie.... unless this numbers game leads to Nattie and Paige forming a little partnership. I'm not against that. I'd rather more individual personalities, but breaking things down into teams of two, instead of teams of three IS, techniclally, an increase in granularity, so that's progress, right?

Backstage: Rollins is talking to HHH/Steph about things, and he wants to know "What's the plan? I got a title match, and this freak Kane is out of control." Steph tries to talk sense, saying "Hey, look, we're pretty sure Kane got it out of his system last night, and he won't be a problem tonight." Rollins isn't buying it. So HHH has to step in and say, "Hey, champ, let us worry about Kane. I suggest YOU worry about John Cena.' That shuts Rollins up.

[ads]

CESARO vs. BIG SHOW

Welp, the Big Show is facing Lesnar at MSG in two weeks, and needs to be built up. Cesaro is the most criminally under-utilized guy on the whole WWE roster. Can this possibly end well?

Nope, not really. Match was 95% Big Show, followed by 4% of Cesaro rallying, leading up to Cesaro hitting a big vertical suplex on Show (on his fourth try), but that took so much out of Cesaro that Big Show was first to his feet, and hit the WMD on Cesaro for the win. Whee.

Your Winner: Big Show, via pinfall, in 6 minutes. Probably longer than it had to be to send the message, but make no mistake: this was about sending the message that Big Show can beat strongmen with one good punch. Point taken. Then Big Show reminds us that he's one of the few men who has pinned Brock Lesnar, and he's gonna do it again at MSG.... the crowd chants "SOO PLEX SIT TEE" at him, and Show laughs it off, saying his fat ass makes it real hard to travel, and he's got no plans to visit that locale.  In short, if Brock Lesnar thinks he's just using Big Show to kickstart his "Go To HELL" Tour, he'd better think again... Big Show will break him at MSG.

[ads]

JOHN CENA vs. SETH ROLLINS (US TITLE MATCH)

Lilian provides full boxing-style ring-intros to lend  a bit of extra gravitas to the proceedings.... from the sound of things, Laredo is about as Cena-friendly a town as we've visited in a while, based on intro.

But wait! Once the bell rings, Rollins sneak attacks Cena, and instantly gets cheered for his dickery. Once we settle in, it's pretty much your standard 50/50 split for "LET'S GO SEE NAH" and "SEE NAH SUCKS."

Rollins rides his prematch attack to an extended advantage in the opening minutes. A few hope spots for Cena, here and there, but Rollins snuffs them all out.  That's your basic formula for a full 5 minutes, until Rollins hits a DDT, and Cena rolls out of the ring to safety. Break in the action means we break for....

[ads]

Back, and Rollins is still firmly in control, working a chinlock on Cena. Because, at this point, I just assume all WWE heels have some sort of drinking game where every time I mention a chinlock after an ad break, they get to make somebody drink. Or commit some other personal forfeit. Why else would they keep doing it so far after the point where it had any actual value?

The crowd starts doing the Wave, out of boredom, and Cena finally fires all the way up, and pretends like he's directing the crowd.... then he rattles off a few moves in a row, leading up to the Five Knuckle Shuffle. But Rollins kicks out of that, and turns the tide when Cena tries to ramp up to the F-U. Some triple back-and-forthy ends with Rollins hitting  a low dropkick for a near fall. Rollins then tries to use Cena's own STF against him....

But Cena powers out, and stands up with Rollins on his shoulders. Before Cena can hit a move, Rollins reaches out and grabs the top ropes to escape. Quickie slingshot knee strike gets Rollins a near fall. First "THIS IS AWE SOME" chants after this.

Rollins follow-up fails, as Cena picks a leg and turns it into a slingshot move in which Rollins eats turnbuckle. Cena with a quick small package, but Rollins kicks out. Bothm men down. Both men up.

They trade punches, and the crowd plays YAY/BOO.  Cena wins it and goes for the F-U. Rollins counters and goes for the Pedigree. Cena counters and goes back to the F-U. Rollins counters and hits the Turnbucklebomb (a/k/a the Stingneckbreakinator).... Cena kicks out at two.

Rollins goes up top and flies, but Cena gets out of the way and picks the ankle. Right into the SSTF.... but Rollins gets the rope break. Another grapple, and another springboard move by Rollins hits, and he goes up top AGAIN. Big flying crossbody by Rollins appears to hit....

But Cena rolls through and hoists Rollins up into position for the F-U in one smooth move. Then, he hits the F-U, and makes the pin. Done.

Your Winner, and STILL US Champ: John Cena, via pinfall, in about 20 minutes. Another really good one between these two. Rollins is making a play to be Cena's new "best opponent ever" in terms of match quality (for my money, Edge holds that title). Very strong main event.

After the Match: Korporate Kane appears on the Titantron, and says it's too bad about the US TItle, but buck up, youngster! You're still the WWE Champion, and maybe you should just focus on that. Because, you know, you never know who might want to challenge you for that title. You can't even imagine who might want to challenge you. In your WORST NIGHTMARE, you couldn't imagine. MUWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

ANd with that, the lights go out, and Kane's Demon Pyro hits.... as Rollins freaks out, Masked Kane pops up from under the ring (he cuts through the mat, and reaches up through the canvas).... Rollins steps too close, and Kane picks the ankle and drags Rollins "down to hell" to close out the show.

The crowd cheers huge as Kane's music restarts, while the ring is now empty. It's on that note that we fade to black...
and we're live

And so ends the show... story-wise, the big take-away was the new Schizo Kane, simultaneously doing the Korporate gimmick and the Demon gimmick. And that was pretty fun.

Action-wise, we got some really good in-ring work, too. The Dudleys/New Day/Ziggler/Rusev six-man was solid, and Cena/Rollins was borderline youtube-worthy.

Toss in Paige doing a nice deep-cut promo with pipebomb elements, which finally starts to give the women more granular/individual personas, which should enable matches more like NXT matches than what we've seen in the WWE womens' division, and that's a decent night of work.

The HiaC PPV is taking shape, and WWE's found a way to do a build to the MSG Show that feels like its own thing without taking away from the PPV build.... for me, "Sustainable Episodic TV" is always the goal, and I thought tonight did a nice job of that.

Maybe no content that'll require rewatching in the future, but as a throwaway 3 hours, I was pretty solidly engrossed throughout.

I'll call that a B-plus final grade, with that last "plus" coming from the strength of the main event and closing angle with Double Schizo Kane (which I know some wankers are gonna hate, but I'm ready for it to be fun!). The last taste is definitely a big deal, and I'll upgrade from a B to a B-plus, as a result..

See you next Monday, kids!
