OO RAW RECAP
You Gotta Break a Few Noses to Make an Omelet?
July 27, 2015

by Rick Scaia
Exclusive to OOWrestling.com

Part of me wants to do a whole big thing about Hulk Hogan and what he did to get fired from WWE. But it's a pretty nuanced argument, and if I just spit it out right now, I'd probably run the risk of people taking it the same way they took Louis CK's SNL monologue from last month.

And while I'd blame YOU for misunderstanding my point, it'd still require that I re-explain myself, so I'm just not gonna touch it, just yet, until I can figure out the right way to say what needs to be said....

In the interim, the Reds just traded Johnny Cueto to the KC Royals, and all things considered, I'm happy about it. I wish the economics of baseball allowed the Reds to keep Cueto, but they don't. So I'm happy he's going for a team I can cheer for, and I'm happy with what the Reds got back, too.

Three LHP who could all legitimately show up on the major league roster at some point? Yeah, that's a GREAT return for a 2 month rental of a RHP ace. I will take that.

And here's what you'll take.... my report on tonight's WWE happenings:

Opening Video Package for the Benefit of Those with ADD: OO does not recap recaps.

A NIGHT OF FIRSTS (IF YOU USE ENOUGH QUALIFIERS)

And we're live in Oklahoma City, OK, where Seth Rollins, Triple H, and Stephanie McMahon are already on their way to the ring... notably, they enter to HHH's music, not Seth's, as if to underscore just who works for whom.

HHH kicks things off by saying tonight is a night of "firsts," and that'll get underway real soon. But kicking things off is the announcement that SummerSlam is going to be four-hours-long, with a main event 17 months in the making :Taker vs. Lesnar.

But that's four weeks from now... tonight is gonna be special, too. For the first time ever, Big Show will face Dean Ambrose. Also for the first time, former WWE Women's Champ Paige will face current NXT WOmen's Champ Sasha Banks (that can't be true, can it?).  Another first: Kevin Owens vs. Randy Orton. And also: Charlotte and Becky vs. Brie Bella and Alicia Fox is a first.

Seth Rollins decides to speak up, and says he wants in on the action. Afterall, he's the man who went into a one-on-one match against Brock Lesnar, and walked out with WWE Title. That makes him one of, if not THE, greatest WWE Champ of all time, and it's high time we all admit it.

Enter John Cena. He says last week, he (Cena) gave Rollins a chance to live up to his line of BS about being a great champ. Because Cena thinks he's a joke, and all he has to do is change Cena's mind by facing Cena for the WWE Title. Last week, Rollins tucked his tail and ran, and so Cena STILL thinks he's a joke.

Cena offers him another shot. He even implores HHH/Steph to get in on this, because it's THEIR title that Rollins is disgracing. Rollins tries to keep them out of it, but Steph speaks up and says, Hey, we ought to let the fans decide. And when she polls them, the fans cheer loudly in favor of a Cena/Rollins WWE Title Match.

So Steph says, "NO! Gotcha." Because if Cena wants a World Title Shot, he'll have to earn it. HHH piles on by declaring that Cena hasn't earned a WWE Title shot, but Seth Rollins has spent the last 5 months being the most dominant force in WWE... so there will be a Cena vs. Rollins match tonight, but it will be for Cena's US Title, because ROllins has certainly earned that.

Rollins and the Authority leave (again, to HHH's music), while Cena gets a resigned look on his face. Not worried, not really upset. Just annoyed at this nonsense....

DEAN AMBROSE vs. BIG SHOW

Miz is sitting in on commentary, decked out in something ridiculous, so Cole makes yet another offhand comment about how Miz looks like he's auditioning for the new Star Wars....

Bell rings, and Show immediately tears Ambrose's t-shirt and calls for the SHHHH! Chops. But Ambrose fights out of the corner, and then lowbridges Show to send him out of the ring. Baseball slide and a through-the-ropes dive both hit, but then Ambrose goes for a top-rope-to-the-floor standing elbow... and Show catches him in mid-air with one of those big chops.

Ambrose crumbles, Show gloats, and we break for....

[ads]

Back, and Show is working a leg submission... Ambrose gets sneaky, and unties Show's boot, causing a break while Show re-ties it. And while Ambrose recovers. When Show turns back to Ambrose, Ambrose catches him with a few boots, and then goes for a sleeper. Show flips Ambrose to escape the hold, but Ambrose keeps the heat on, clotheslining Show's throat over the top rope, and then going for the standing elbow, again.

And again, Show catches him, this time with a brief bearhug, then into a throw. Show calls for the chokeslam, but Ambrose counters it, smoothly, into a DDT. Ambrose goes on a rally, but when he tries the Rebound Clothesline, Show catches him with a chop, and then a chokeslam. Ambrose rolls out of the ring, and Show seems content to take the count-out.

Ambrose makes it back into the ring at 8. Show greets him with a big boot that sends Ambrose back out of the ring. Show follows, and cuts him in half with a spear. Show gets back in the ring, and once again waits for a count-out.  This time, Ambrose just barely beats the count at 9. Show starts stalking him, so Ambrose just dives out of the ring again....

When Show follows, Ambrose catches him with a kick, and then goes for the suicide dive again. This time, he dives right into the KO Punch. Show gets back into the ring, and waits for the count-out... this time, he gets it. Ambrose gets to his feet at 9, but stumbles back to his knees.

Your Winner: Big Show, via count-out, in about 12 minutes.  Deceptively well constructed match.... you just don't think of two guys putting together a psychologically sound excuse for a count-out finish. But that's what these two did. It helps Show look like the monster he needs to be, and Ambrose is the kind of guy who can do this, and not have it hurt him, at all, with the fans.

After the Match: Ambrose remaining in a heap, near the Timekeeper Cubicle. Show seemed wlling to walk away, but then got a glint in his eye, and charged.... Ambrose side-stepped, and Show crashed through the barricade. So after all that, Show is down and out, and Ambrose is the last man standing, afterall, all because Show got greedy after the match.

NEVILLE vs. FANDANGO

Fandango did get a brief moment of offense, in which he did a really cool surfboard-y type submission that I haven't seen before... it's probably not something that can't be replicated on any opponent that isn't Neville, though, so that kind of reduces its usefulness.

Then Neville hit the Red Arrow.

Your Winner: Neville, via pinfall, in about 90 seconds. This was here for no reason other than showcase Neville and remind us that he's feuding with Stardust. To that end, Stardust pops up on the Tron after the match, and talks about how in a world that celebrates heroes, people need to realize that heroes are only as heroic as their super villains. And Stardust is settig out to be the greatest super villain ever. "Neville, be my hero, won't you?"

[ads]

Backstage: Paige, Charlotte, and Becky are hanging out and celebrating how great the Diva Revolution is going. But then Team BAD crash the party, and say that the credit for the revolution, it's Stephanie McMahon. And also, there's only one champion in the room, and it's Sasha, the current NXT Champion. Paige retorts that that's great, but there's only one FIRST EVER NXT Champ, and it's Paige. Sasha makes a joke about how that just means Paige is known for LOSING titles, but Sasha is known for winning them.

It breaks down into a shouting match, and the heels eventually leave when Tamina says "We'll see you out there."

[ads]

PAIGE (w/ Charlotte and Becky Lynch) vs. SASHA BANKS (w/ Naomi and Tamina)

Matching t-shirts inform us that Paige & Co. are now calling themselves "Team House." As in, it is theirs. First back and forth exchange is a stand-off that spills out of the ring. The three-on-three staredown ends because both Paige and Sasha tell their teams to back down and let them handle it.

Back in the ring, and that basic stand-off/tit-for-tat vibe continues for a couple minutes. Along the way, Cole clarifies that this is the first time this match has happened ON RAW. Ahhhh, I had a feeling this wasn't really a first-ever.

Things do briefly break in favor of Paige, but she opts to keep it slow and simple with armbars (rather than the more traditional babyface flash flurry). WHen Paige sends Sasha out of the ring, Naomi and Tamina swarm to help, but Paige goes up top, and dives onto all three, taking them out. WIth that moment of flash, all the heels are down, so we break for....

[ads]

Back, and it's down to one-on-one, because the ref ejected Charlotte/Becky/Naomi/Tamina. Oh, and if you need proof that the ladies can do everything the men can, here it is: because Sasha comes out of the ad break working a CHINLOCK~! Paige manages to escape, but Sasha keeps the pressure on for a bit, with a lot more high impact stuff, like facewash boots and double stomps. Also, some heat-seeking by completely mocking Paige's mannerisms.

Paige finally fires up, using a lot of her standard striking (headbutts and knees), leading to a submission (part leglock, part chinlock)... but Sasha gets a rope break, and then plays a bit of possum, hanging on the ropes so the ref has to hold Paige back. Then, when she finally addresses Paige, Sasha locks in the Banks Statement, and Paige has to tap.

Your Winner: Sasha Banks, via submission, in 12 minutes. Definitely good stuff, here, in terms of both women showing the moveset and skill that's turned the NXT Women's Division into something special. But the crowd wasn't quite there with them, and the finish was a bit underwhelming. That said, still the right finish, as getting Sasha off to a good start (and keeping her strong on WWE TV, so she can absorb the loss of the NXT Title on the night before SummerSlam) is vital.

KISS IT, RUSEV~!

Rusev and Summer Rae are already in the ring, as we return. And Rusev can't wait to start talking, because -- how we say? -- he is smitten. He is bursting, because of the woman he loves, the perpetually lovely, and perpetually obedient Summer Rae. It is a woman's privilege to be obedient, but it is the man's privilege to give gifts.

So he gives Summer a box, and she opens it, revealing a puppy. Summer loves it, and wants to know what they should name it. Rusev is ready with a prepared spiel about how the tattered appearance, the skinny legs, the bad breath, and the neutering means it should be Dog Ziggler. HA! That's actually funny.

Then, another gift: Summer opens a second box, and it's a whole fish, on ice. If you already know the punchline, join the club. But we have to wait for it, as Summer slowly conveys her disgust as Rusev orders her to hold it up, so he can make his joke that they should name IT, too. And in honor of the most famous Cold Fish of all times, he says this fish is named Lana. Not nearly as funny as Dog Ziggler.

That's when Lana shows up to register he opinion that this is all entirely pathetic on Rusev's part. He dresses Summer up like Lana, he kisses Summer while looking at Lana, it's pretty clear what he wants. And he can't have it, no matter how much he's enjoying his current little Fake Lana.

Summer retorts by holding up the Cold Fish and making the requisite accompanying zinger, so Lana kicks off the heels and tackles her. Then, Lana rubs Summer's face in the fish, and marches away, rather proud of herself. Let's see Rusev kiss Summer now!

Of course, he opts not to, as he begins to gag when he gets anywhere near Summer's face. You know, it's not really that funny as a one-off gag, but if WWE turns this into that one episode of Seinfeld where Jerry can't kiss his girlfriend because she brushed her teeth with a tainted toothbrush, and they eventually break up because of it, THAT would be hilarious.

LUCHA DRAGONS vs. LOS MATADORES (w/ El Torito)

It's not a #1 Contenders match, but the announcers keep bludgeoning us over the top of our heads with the notion that these are "two teams jockeying for position." Meantime, the PTPs are the champs, and the New Day haven't gone anywhere, so we're telegraphing with a 3-way or a 4-way SummerSlam match, right?

Speaking of which, the Prime Time Players are sitting in on guest commentary, and Titus wastes no time giving a big sarcastic hello to JBL (whom he pwned a couple weeks ago on guest commentary). Meantime, he also teases his partner just as bad, constantly imploring DYoung to "hit yer line," at which point Darren would spit out some useless bit of fluffery. Good times.

For a bit, the Matadores play it straight, and just go highspot for highspot, just trying to pop the crowd. But then El Torito chimed in and the Matadores blatantly cheated to gain control. As the Matadores settle in for a heel beatdown, Titus is once again gold as he demands to know when bullfighting came to Puerto Rico, because these is some Puerto Rican bullfighters, and that makes no sense. [Truth. The Matadores are the Colons, a/k/a Carlito's younger brothers.]

Sin Cara spends several minutes as a Face in Peril (with JBL as the Commentator in Peril thanks to Titus), then a hot tag to Kalisto, who is en feugo for a minute or so....

Then, the New Day's music hits, and they hit the ring, with a sign claiming that Kofi is the REAL MegaDad of the year (some award that Titus actually won)... it's just a giant distraction for everyone, and Kalisto hits Salina del Sol for the win. Which means the Matadores beat the PTPs because of New Day, but now, the Dragons beat the Matadores, because of New Day. Yep, I was right. Four-way coming.

Your Winners: the Lucha Dragons, via pinfall, in 8 minutes. Pretty swell action, but the PTPs added a lot on commentary, too (Titus in an over-the-top pro-active manner, Darren in a more subdued comedy-ninja fashion). It's not a segment that'll blow you away, but it's a segment that engaged you on two fronts at the same time, and that doesn't happen often. I'll take it.

BRAY WYATT SETS LUKE HARPER TO BURN....

The fireflies are out in full force as Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper hit the ring. Wyatt begins the talking, asking the simple question, "We all have family. But do you love yours?" Everybody just sort of blurts out, uhhhh, yeah.

So then, the questions gets more complicated. "Do you tell them you love them, that everything is gonna be alright as long as you stick together, and blood is thicker than water, but if we love each other, that's all that matters?" And the fans still seem to think that, yeah, this is a good narrative.

But Bray flips it, because those are all lies. None of those bland pleasantries are true, but they are easy lies to believe, and so the weak believe them. They even celebrate them

This turns into a story about Bray's childhood pet, who was a pathetic pushover, so Bray lost interest and sent it away. But then, it came back, with a scar on its face, and it had changed, and Bray took it back, because it was so much more interesting, now.

Back in the before time, Bray treated Luke Harper like a pet, and then set him free. Now, Luke Harper is back, and he's a far more interesting specimen now, in his second life. But Bray doesn't want to tell you, he wants Luke to tell you.

Harper takes the mic, and says that Wyatt accepted him once, and took him to a new level. Then Bray set him free, and he went to another level. Now, Harper is back, and together, the two will go to a third level. It's that simple. "Bray, MY. LIFE. FOR. YOU."

Wyatt cackles and tags on some stuff about how this is all part of their plot to get Roman Reigns. But motly, the takeaway here is that somebody just read The Stand. Bray is now Flagg, and Harper is Trashcan Man. You better believe that happy crappy!

CHARLOTTE & BECKY LYNCH (w/ Paige) vs. NIKKI BELLA & ALICIA FOX (w/ Brie)

Becky vs. Nikki to start, and Becky wins, and quickly makes a tag to Charlotte. For the first time, the biggest potential breakout star of the NXT Infusion has a chance against the WWE Champ. And Nikki comports herself well, changing the tide long enough to take in Alicia.

That's when Charlotte goes back to comporting HERself well for a bit, until Nikki creates a distraction, allowing Alicia to hit a pearl harbor attack. The heel beatdown commenculates. Freequent tags and cutting the ring in half.

After about 2-3 minutes, Charlotte powers out of a submission and creates enough separation to get the tag to Becky. Becky's a lass en feugo, to the point that NIkki has to come in for the illegal double team. Turns into a Pier Four Brawl, and as soon as it settles back down to Becky and Alicia, Becky cinches in the disarmer.

Your Winners: Becky Lynch and Charlotte, via submission, in about 6 minutes.  As discussed last week, not every crowd is gonna be a pre-sold on the NXT Infusion as others, and OKC sort of slept on this. That hurt the atmosphere. The effort was still there, though, and I do appreciate that they didn't just jump right to the obvious finish (Charlotte finally beating Nikki, after two tap-outs on Brie); pausing to remind us that Becky is a worthwhile thing, in and of herself, is good.

RANDY ORTON vs. KEVIN OWENS

Sheamus is sitting in on guest commentary, which pretty much means Sheamus/Orton is still A Thing, despite the fact that I was already bored by it at Battleground (when the two had an objectively good match, but I just failed to give any shits)... the tie in with Owens (who is feuding with Cesaro) opens up a few possibilities, if the US Title winds up available and in need of filling (wouldn't a six-way with Cesaro/Owens/Sheamus/Orton/Rusev/Ziggler be dandy?), but that's me fantasy booking, based on nothing. So let's sit back and see what happens with Orton and Sheamus in the same space as Owens, here....

Bell rings. Shouting match. Shoving match. Then once it turns into fists and boots, Orton wins, and Owens bails out of the ring. Orton follows, and it's back and forth for a bit, but Orton resumes control by introducing Owens to various bits of ringside furniture. Then back into the ring for the Garvin Stomp and other Lethargy for a bit.

Owens dives out of the ring again, and that's when the tide turns. Owens reverses a whip, and Orton meets ring post. Then Orton meets steps. And with Owens celebrating his fortuitous turn, we break for....

[ads]

Back, and Owens is really trying to piss off Randall, because he's got the Viper in a CHINLOCK. Oh, the audacity! The disrespect!

Orton powers out, but Owens snuffs it out with a running senton. More offense by Owens, but Orton his the flash wrap-around backbreaker. Owens with another snuff-out, with knee strikes. And then, for the second week in a row, Owens just starts randomly taunting Cole. Did I miss something? Or is that supposed to be a valid heel tactic? The time wasted means Orton manages to get out of the way when Owens tries for the Bowling Ball Dive.

Orton's full-on comeback continues with a pendulum powerslam, and T-bone suplex. Orton goes for the Hanging DDT, only to have Owens clothesline his throat over the top rope. The match spills outside, and as soon as Orton starts to get the better of it, Sheamus gets up from commentary, and attacks Orton.

Your Winner: Randy Orton, via disqualification, in 12 minutes. Certainly inoffensive, but equally unmemorable. It passed the time until we got to a storyline element... as soon as Sheamus interferes, it makes it seem like he and Orton have another chapter. D'oh.

After the Match: Owens was setting to join in on a beatdown on Orton. That's when Cesaro ran out to attack Owens. But with Orton out of it, Sheamus joined in briefly to help Owens get the upperhand, and then he left. Owens hit the pop-up powerbomb and Cesaro and walked away. So, ummmmm.... no tangible effort to tie the two together into once story. They went out of their way to keep it Owens vs. Cesaro, and Sheamus vs. Orton. For better or for worse.

JOHN CENA vs. SETH ROLLINS (US Title Match)

Full boxing-style ring intros by Lilian Garcia. Thank you, Lilian. And we're off.... bell rings at exactly 10:50pm (eastern), with the WWE World Champ as the CHALLENGER to the US Title.

Sounds like pretty close to a 50/50 split of fans, to start, and the opening moments are also 50/50, as Cena has the power edge, but Rollins has more of a tactical edge. About 90 seconds nto the match, Cena dares to go for the F-U.... but Rollins fights out, kicks Cena in the gut, and gets a bit of a run as a result of Cena's hubris.

In an unprecedented twist, Rollins settles in for a chinlock, and THEN we break for....

[ads]

Back, and Rollins is STILL working that chinlock. Wow, worst commercial break, EVAR~!

Cena quickly powers out, but Rollins quickly puts him back on his ass with a few strikes and a suplex. Second suplex. And a near fall.  Rollins stars bitchslapping Cena, as if he did something. Uhhh, Sethyboy, two suplexes is Suplex Meadow. Not Suplex City. You didn't do anything, son.

Cena, as annoyed as I am by that little inexplained outburst starts his Five Moves of Doom. Rollins squishes it after two. Cena has to do another comeback, and gets all th way up to the Five Knuckle Shuffle... Rollins boots him in the head before the fistdrop can hit.  Rollins sets up a superplex, but Cena turns it into a Tornado DDT for a near fall.

Cena tries for his first F-U, but Rollins easily escapes, and sends Cena out of the ring. Suicide Dive follow up by Rollins. Back into the ring. Running knee lift. But Cena still kicks out at two.

Rollins calls for the Pedigree, but Cena fights out and turns it into an Electric Chair Facebuster. Rollins kicks out at 2. Crowd has shifted to a more pro-Cena mood... some of the haters may not be CHEERING for him, but Rollins is soo good as a douchey heel that most folks have stopped booing Cena.

There's an interlude where Cena comes up bleeding from the nose, and a trainer wants to check on him.... Rollins uses that break to recover and regain control (without the trainer really doing much of anything, besides putting on his rubber gloves). Rollins is able to hit his running Turnbuckle Bomb as a result of this.

While Cena is selling the turnbuckle bomb, the trainer finally insists on checking Cena, who is bleeding pretty badly from the nose. It's deemed OK, but this time, the break gives CENA the time he needs to recover, and as soon as Rollins rejoins the fight, Cena goes on a tear, leading up to a (shitty) springboard stunner for a near fall. But when he goes for the F-U, Rollins escapes and turns it into a superkick for anear fall of his own.

While they are showing replays of that last exchange, Cena gets a burst of energy and hits a flash F-U while they are on split screen. Rollins kicks out at two.  Cena goes up top, and as he does, we get a close up that shows just how wrecked Cena's nose is. Ouch. Rollins catches Cena on the top. Superplex, with an insta-roll-through to a facebuster.

Cena still kicks out at 2. Rollins digs deep, and goes up top for a twisting moonsault.... Cena rolls out of the way, and when Rollins lands hard, Cena picks the ankle and floats over into the SSTF. Whether by design, or because Cena's busted nose required a rapid ending, Rollins just insta-tapped.

Your Winner: John Cena, via submission, in about 15 minutes. Good stuff, my expectations were blown away. Then again, my expectations had mroe to do with J&J and/or Kane showing up to reform Voltron with Rollins and cause a cop-out ending.

Instead, the two had a really good match, and a flat-out clean finish. And Cena spending the last 5 mintues with his nose splattered across his face actually did engender some intrigue and sympathy. I hate that he got hurt in a way that one should not get hurt in a wrestling match, but the sheer bludgeoning REALITY of his face being smashed made it more compelling.

I think that cements Cena vs. Rollins as the WWE Title match at SummerSlam... but I think we can fill the 4 weeks until then sorting out where the US Title fits in all this. I'd prefer if it isn't a title-for-title, but if it isn't, why not? I have my ideas, but we'll have to wait to see how WWE goes with it....

Cena can't enjoy his win, as trainers swarm, but his music is playing, and Rollins is retreating as we fade to black....

And so ends the show... nothing hit as strong as last week, but they avoided all of last week's massive pitfalls (mostly, too many replays/retreads). Yeah, they did do an entire replay of the Taker/Lesnar video package (it opned the show, and got a full replay at the top of the 10pm hour), which is really annoying to me, as a fan who was watching at both points. But WWE thinks it's worth it to court viewers who are watching at one, but no the other.... so yeah, whatever....

I think the value WWE got out of every segment was actually pretty impressive. Most things counted as a bit of a story-add, or stood alone as a worthwhile in-ring display. And at the end of the day, THAT is what I like about a wrestling show. Something a little different in each segment, but each segment is still worthwhile.

In addition to the obvious bits that everybody will talk about, I'm gonna make sure to underscore that the tag title match segment was HIGHLY enjoyable, thanks to Dragons/Matadores having a good match while the PTPs added soemthign extra on commentary.

I think I can safely just slap a B-Plus grade on that, and call it a night. See you next Monday, OO Nation!
