OO RAW RECAP
Brock Made Humble
June 22, 2015

by Rick Scaia
Exclusive to OOWrestling.com

Words word words Cincinnati Red words words. Words words jesus this weather amiright words words words words words.

Words words bigger words some pontificating about current events words words words words. Words words words isn't The Rick the greatest words words words words and more words.

But I digress. Here's what happened on tonight's edition of Monday Night RAW:

Opening Theme/Pyro/Etc, and we're live in Indianapolis, IN, the OOfficial Birthplace of The Rick... and we're also wasting no time, since  Brock Lesnar is on his way to the ring (and sure enough, he is sporting another "Suplex City" highway sign t-shirt, and it's personalized for Indy, so I'm guessing he sold about 15,000 of them, because if you were there, and you didn't buy one, you confuse and disappoint me.... if there's a wrestling t-shirt that *I* would buy (it happens so very rarely), and you're not doing so, there's something wrong.

BROCK MADE HUMBLE (NOT REALLY)

During Lesnar's entrance, we actually do stop and waste some time, replaying the announcement from last week, where Triple H challenged Seth Rollins to step up and prove himself, he did, and then Brock happened.

When we come out of that package, Paul Heyman has the mic, and he gives Brock Lesnar a proper introduction, and then gives us the retcon for why Lesnar is back, even though he is "fired."  And it comes down to one very simple matter: if Brock apologizes, he's re-instated. The crowd chants "NO" at him, and also "SUP PLEX SIT TEE," but Heyman says this is a condition of reinstatement, and if Brock does not "make things right" with Michael Cole and JBL and that one cameraman, then he will NOT get a title match against Seth Rollins at Battleground. The crowd chants "NO" at the prospect of a kinder, gentler Brock, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do....

Even Cole says "This isn't necessary," but it's required. And so Lesnar goes over, and shakes JBL's hand. ANd then, Lesnar goes over to Cole, and a handshake won't suffice.... so he brings Cole in for a headlock, a noogie, and a pat on the head. Heh.

And with that out of the way, Heyman declares that he has an apology of his own.... and apology in advance to Seth Rollins, the sleazy, slimey, slinky scumbag who took Brock Lesnar's WWE Title without even beating Brock Lesnar. In short, Rollins is going to die after an all expenses paid trip to Suplex City, BITCH. And that's what's BEAST for business.

DEAN AMBROSE vs. KANE

There's history here, in the sense that Kane was obligated to have Seth Rollins' back while Rollins was feuding with Ambrose.... but more interestng, these two had a VERY compelling interaction last Monday, when Kane wanted to get pissed at Ambrose, but Ambrose wound up delivering a really intriguing little pep talk, instead. Hopefully, we're looking to use this match to build on the latter, and not waste time dicking around with the former.

Bell rings, so let's find out, together! Fast start from Ambrose, Kane takes over for a minute or two, and "just like that" (Cole's words, not mine), Ambrose is in a heap outside the ring, so we might as well just give up and watch some....

[ads]

Back, and it's all Kane. He's working Ambrose over in a corner, and then catches him with a sidewalk slam coming out of said corner. Then, and only then, does he resort to the requisite chinlock. Kane, you rebel....

Beatdown continulates for a bit. Then Ambrose hits a flash neckbreaker. He can't follow up with a cover, but by the time Kane gets to his feet, Ambrose is ready to join the fight. The rally is on!

Rebound clothesline hits. Lowbridge. Baseball slide dropkick. Back in the ring.... and Seth Rollins' music hits, and the champ comes down the ramp.

Ambrose goes on the offensive, hitting a big suicide dive onto Rollins... then Ambrose heads back into the ring to focus on Kane. Ambrose goes up top, and Rollins gets on the apron, so Ambrose kicks him off.... but that distraction is enough to allow Kane to get up and catch Ambrose with a chokeslam off the top rope.

Technically, Rollins never hit a single actual move on Ambrose, so there is no DQ. Instead, Kane's Atomic Chokeslam stands.

Your WInner: Kane, via pinfall, in about 12 minutes. Perfectly serviceable match, though the finish did stretch credibility/believability to the breaking point (even by pro wrestling standards, Rollins did enough to influence the outcome that it probably should have been a DQ).... but it seems WWE is deadset on the idea that Kane vs. Ambrose is a valid feud, and now, Kane has a win, so they're getting their way, for better or for worse.

[ads]

Backstage: Rollins and Kane are walking, together, and Rollins is all "Wow, man, when we are on the same page, look what we can accomplish!" But Kane is all "We? Really? Brock Lesnar is back, and now you just want to get the band back together because you're scared." Rollins insists that's not so, and extends the handshake to Kane.... Kane just smirks and walks away.

PRIME TIME PLAYERS vs. THE ASCENSION (Non-Title Match)

We're all adults here, so let's not pretend this is something it wasn't.

Your WInners: the Prime Time Players, via pinfall, in 4 minutes or thereabouts. They didn't completely stooge out the Ascension, but they also never made it even remotely plausible that they might win. Only noteworthy wrinkle is that Titus played Face in Peril, with DYoung getting the hot tag and the pin.

ROMAN REIGNS vs. SHEAMUS

During ring intros, I notice that Lilian Garcia is back to the mid-thigh-high boots. So either she's just wearing them because she likes them, or the knee injury isn't as fully recovered as last week's uninterrupted-by-knee-brace leg show might have indicated. Or, third possibility: Lilian has decided to play a private game of "Can I Trick The Rick Into Talking About Women's Footwear for a Fourth Week in a Row?", in which case, she is winning.

Anyway, I digress. As soon as the bell rings, the slobberknockery begins. And when Reigns gets the better of that, Sheamus does what chickenshit heels, do: he chickenshits. Bails out of the ring, Reigns follows, and sends him back in. ON a second bail out, they pull of the cat and mouse role reversal, with Sheamus clotheslineing Reigns' neck over the top rope.

Off that, Sheamus goes for the Ten of Clubs. Reigns fights out. Sheamus hits the Irish Curse, instead, and with Reigns temporarily incapacitated, we break for....

[ads]

Back, and sure enough, Sheamus is working the requisite chinlock.... it's getting to the point where I have no choice but to believe WWE heels are, collectively, trolling us. It was one thing when Orton abused that boring-ass resthold, but now, it is the ubiquitous out-of-ad-break heel go-to move.

Per formula, Reigns quickly powers out of it, and Sheamus tries to snuff it out with the Ten of Clubs. He only gets 3 or 4 in, and Reigns reverses it, and goes for his running apron dropkick thingie (it's technical name!), but Sheamus pops up and catches him with a clothesline, and resumes command.

Eventually, this leads back to another chinlock. Reigns tries firing up, so Sheamus just punishes him with a trio of Irish Curses, clearly putting a target on Reigns' lower back. Cloverleaf attempt causes Reigns to go for a rope break.... but instead of breaking, Sheamus clotheslines Reigns' neck on the bottom rope and THEN cinches in the Cloverleaf. Ouch.

At the last second, Reigns is just barely able to power out, but Sheamus steps back and hits a clothesline. A couple of forearms to Reigns' lower back, and he asks if we are not entertained. OK, I'll admit it: this is not entirely unentertaining!

But then Sheamus' hubris gets the better of him, and Reigns is able to take advantage of his taunting to start a rally.  Running apron dropkick thingie hits. Then outside, the fight spills onto the announce table. With Sheamus laid out on the table, Reigns is setting up for a Death Blow....

But Bray Wyatt pops up on the Tron, and is apparently having a little tea party.... we never see if there's anyone there with him, but he's talking to someone, saying that "Daddy is just a little late" and singing "I'm a little teapot."

Reigns freaks out and runs to the back. Then, and only then, does the camera pan back to reveal that Wyatt was bluffing: he's talking to an empty rocking chair. Reigns' daughter is in no danger, afterall. Yet.

Your Winner: it's never announced, but one assumes Sheamus is your winner, via count-out, after a solid 12 minute match. And a decent little finish, too, which protects Mr. MitB, while advancing the Reigns/Wyatt feud in a delightfully creepy fashion.

[ads]

Backstage: Reigns didn't get the memo that it was all a trick, and is rampaging all around the backstage area, until he hears "I'm a little teapot" coming from one room.... he storms in, but there is no Bray. It's just a recording. But the room is adorned with pictures of Reigns and his daughter (with Reigns' eyes cut out of the pictures, or whited out, I'm not sure, but creepy), and the announcers declare that Reigns is out of his element, and Bray is totally puppetmastering him.

Elsewhere Backstage: J&J Security are warming up their coffee in catering, when Seth Rollins walks in, and asks for a cup of his own, for old times' sake. J&J decline to fall back in line, reminding Seth of all the crap he's put them through. Seth tries to tell them that it was all friendly ribbing, because that's what friends do. That's what FAMILY does. And he wants to keep things together with them, because he honestly thinks of them as family. He insists that this isn't because of Lesnar, it's how he really feels, so c'mon, guys....

And Noble and Mercury just both shake their heads, pityingly, and walk out on him.

NEVILLE vs. KOFI KINGSTON (w/ BIG E & EGGSAVIER WOODS)

Neville found himself as kind of the add-on in the PTP vs. New Day feud, evening the sides at 3 apiece, and he even got a singles win over Woods, last week. Now, he graduates to Kofi in a one-on-one showdown of two guys who were in MitB.

As Neville gets off to a hot start, Woods makes me laugh out loud by making the thumb-and-pinky-finger gesture and threatening to call gravity and rat him out RIGHT NOW, if he doesn't cease and desist. Nevile doesn't, but formula (and time compression) dictate the Kofi gains command in short order, so he can settle in for a beatdown segment.

All of 90 seconds of mini-beatdown, the Neville's comeback results in him hitting a big move to the outside of the ring.... Woods and Big E swarm, and threaten Neville, so the PTPs show up on the scene to even the score.

After a kurfuffle, the ref winds up ejecting all 4 extraneous guys. From there, it's a very short  journey to the Red Arrow and the end.

Your Winner: Neville, via pinfall, in about 5 minutes.  I can state, with authority, that this was a thing that happened.

[ads]

ZACK RYDER vs. KING BARRETT

In a pre-tape insert during Barrett's entrance, we see that R-Truth is continuing his delusional rantings about how he is the "rightful" king. And while he holds two wins over Barrett, the "kingship" is not something that is on the line in every match, like it was back in olden times of King Hacksaw and King Macho, so Barrett is also in the right to say that Truth is being a royal ass.

And then, Ryder proceeds to do what Ryder does. Which is to say, job.

Your Winner: King Barrett, via pinfall, in 3 minutes. Shocking, I know.

JOHN CENA, CUNNING LINGUIST

After one whole week, John Cena is back! PRETEND TO BE EXCITED~!

Or don't. Indianapolis couldn't be bothered. They just sing-songed "John Cena SUUUUUUUUUCCCCKKKSSSSSSSS" at him. It's an easy 30/70 split against Cena, if not worse.

As if wanting to explore "worse," Cena kicks things off in  his situational inappropriate super phoney shouty street voice, holding up his belt and bad-mouthing Kevin Owens, while trying to generate sympathy for Machine Gun Kelly. Two strikes, right there, JonJon.

Then, he admits, OK, Kevin Owens is a great wrestler. Finally, he gets one right. But he thinks Owens is a garbage human being, and for that reason, he doesn't want to give Owens the satisfaction of accepting his challenge for a US Title match.... Cena could just say No, and Owens would deserve that. But if Cena gives him that answer, then he facilitates Owens' narrative. So Cena will fight Owens, and he will defend the US Title.

Enter Owens. He stays up on the stage to deliver his smirking missive.... it amounts to "I guess I could be upset about the stuff you just said, but I'm not somebody who's ever cared much what other people think." Call him a slob, out of shape, or a dirtback, but the facts are that he pinned Cena at Elimination Chamber, and he broke Cena after their match at Money in the Bank. And now, Owens wants the US Title.

So, in exchange for his title shot, Owens will give Cena what he REALLY wants: he will give Cena the "evil foreigner" challenger who fans will boo.

Owens breaks out into French to accept the challenge for Battleground, and sure enough, Indiana murmurs and boos.

Cena responds by saying that people don't hate Owens because he's Canadian or speaks French. They hate him because he's a jerk. To prove it, Cena busts out some French of his own. Then, some Chinese. And finally, some good ol' fashioned Uhmurican, as he says he'll kick Owens' ass at Battleground. Yay. I guess.

Backstage: Seth Rollins walks in on Triple H and Stephanie, and laments how J&J and Kane just aren't getting it. Rollins wants the family to be together, and.... HHH cuts him off, and says to cut the BS. Rollins is panicking because of Brock Lesnar. But that's OK. It's normal. It's sane to be a little worried about a beast like Brock Lesnar.

But being worried doesn't mean being stupid. Seth is smart, and even when faced with Lesnar, he should do the smart thing.... and that means kissing and making up with Kane and J&J. Rollins is hesitant at first, but finally nods in agreement after Steph tells him to "be the bigger man." Looks like Rollins is gonna beg forgiveness in the middle of the ring, later tonight.

NAOMI & TAMINA vs. THE BELLA TWINS (& ALICIA)

The announcers advance the story that Naomi and Tamina may not care for Paige, but they also still hate the Bellas. That's a bit complicated, though, so rather than pick a side, the live crowd just opts to be mostly silent. If anything, the intra-match psychology paints the Bellas as the faces, which is just doubly confounding.

Brie is the face in peril, hot tag to Nikki, Naomi and Tamina try some illegal doubleteamng, but it backfires, and Naomi hits the Rear View on Tamina by accident. Rack Attack. Fin.

Your WInners: the Bella Twins, via pinfall in 3 minutes. Five days ago, the Bellas were aggressively evil, adding Alicia to their team to make them even more cheaty and terrible. Today, they (all three) are the babybaces, with no explanation or justification. I guess we're back to the "bitches be crazy" booking of the division, where all women hate all other women, and logic and character building need not apply?

RYBACK vs. MARK HENRY (Non-Title Match)

Big Show is sitting in on guest commentary. He underscores the idea that he respects Ryback and can't wait to fight over the IC Title with him, after they dispatch Miz, who has no business in the match, at all. And just like that, I sense that Miz is the favorite to win the IC Title in four weeks. Ahem.

Ryback dominates early. Then the match spills outside, and Henry counters a whip, sending Ryback into the barricade. Tables are turned, and with Ryback down, we break for...

[ads]

Back, and we join Ryback in mid-fire-up... he finally calls for the Meathook, and Big Show gets up from commentary, and creates a momentary distraction.

Henry has a shot at the WSS, but Ryback sneaks out the back door, hits the Meathook, and then decides to try something different. Insted of Shellshock, he goes up top and hits a top rope splash.

Your Winner: Ryback, via pinfall, in 5 minutes. Yeah, 5 minutes, and 3 of those were an ad break. If you were able to muster up the ability to care, you're a better person than I am.

After the Match: Big Show got in the ring, and started off giving a bit of a pep talk to Henry, but then it grew angry and beligerent. So Show may be the tweener in betwixt Ryback and Miz, but I guess he's the heel turning Henry into a babyface? Either that, or the WWE Writer Monkeys just lack the attention span to create fully formed, nuanced characters.... not that the whole mess with the Bellas just planted that seed in my brain, or anything.

Backstage: Joey Jo Jo is standing by with Ryback, who talks about how the IC Title is the best thing ever, and he's so proud to be holding it, and so forth.... in walks Big Show, who golf claps the nice speech, but says Ryback is still just a "little guy" in a giant's world, so be better get comfy with the idea of dropping that title, soon. Ryback calls "all talk, no show," and the brawl is on. Big Show gets the better of it at first, but then he falls prey to the Clangy Poles of Doom, before refs swarm and break it up.

[ads]

DOLPH ZIGGLER (w/ Lana) vs. ADAM ROSE (w/ Rosa)

Before the match, Rose cuts a promo about how what he and Rosa have is "true love," unlike Dolph and Lana's sleazy hook-up. He also adds a few forboding references to his "masterpiece," and how it will be slowly revealed.... and then, and only then, will we American "dullards" get it. Hmmm.

Then the bell rings. And while Rose gets a lot more in than I would have guessed, it's still over in less than 3 minutes.

Your Winner: Dolph Ziggler, via pinjfall, in 3 minutes. They may or may not be building to something of substance with Rose and his "masterpiece," but they are DEFINITELY keeping up the Ziggler/Rusev feud, as Rusev was watching from backstage, and got very pissy when Dolph stuck his tongue down Lana's throat.... but then, in a twist, when Summer Rae showed up to console him, he was kinda into that. Lana Who?

Backstage: Triple H and Steph have called J&J and Kane into their office.... they're just feeling things out, cuz Seth Rollins is gonna ask for their support in a moment, and they hope they can count on them to all have Seth's back. None of the three seems sold on the idea, but HHH really tries to drive home how the pressures of holding the WWE Title will make a sane man go crazy, so really, could they all just give Seth a pass, and accept his apology?

Kane just shakes his head and walks out. This embiggens J&J to do the same. It appears that Team Authority won't be rallying behind Rollins in our main event promo, afterall...

[ads]

BROCK MADE HUMBLE (FOR REAL, THIS TIME)

So here's Seth Rollins, headed to the ring at the stroke of 11pm (eastern). Whether he's apologizing and whether anyone is accepting, this ain't gonna take a whole lotta time....

So Rollins cuts to the chase, and says "Sometimes, it's easier to pretend you're right than admit that you're wrong. But I have to do what's right, and that's admit that I've been wrong." He call Kane and J&J out to the ring, so he can apologize to them.

The three oblige, and hit the ring. Seth says he's realized that a team is only as good as its foundation and THEY are the foundation. And no, this has nothing to do with Brock Lesnar. This has to do with family and friendship. Kane and J&J seem half-convinced. Indy is unconvinced, and chant "SOO PLEX SIT TEE" at Rollins.

But Rollins forges on, asking for forgiveness. He sucks up to J&J, calling them legends in their own right, and he looks up to them and patterns his in-ring work after them. Then, he focuses his laser of asskissery on Kane, taking back all the things he's said about Kane being washed up, because he truly is the Devil's Favorite Demon, and he's Seth's personal favorite wrestler. Out of the blue, this gets a "JUST TIN BEE BER" chant.

Rollins closes with a pretty genuine and desperate-sounding "Please, please, PLEASE, this is me, and I'm begging. Take me back?" Kane and J&J almost seems sold, but before they can commit, Brock Lesnar's music hits, and he heads towards the ring. Looks like Seth is gonna find out about his "foundation" on the fly, at the same time as the rest of us.

As Brock circles the ring twice, Paul Heyman takes up a post by the announce table, licking his lips. Rollins calls a huddle, and after a moment, Kane and J&J say "Good luck with all that," and bail out of the ring.... Brock breaks out into the Lesnar Shuffle, and hops up on the apron. He's gonna love kicking the shit out of Rollins.

Or will he? All of a sudden Kane slinks into frame, and pulls Lesnar off the aprong. Noble and Mercury join in.

At first, the drama is whether Rollins will take advantage of this weak-ass distraction to run away, or not. But then, when Kane is actually able to hit a chokeslam, Rollins joins in.... bad timing, as Lesnar chucks Kane out of the ring, and isolates on Rollins for a minute or three.

Needless to say, Rollins gets taken on a trip to Suplex City, and he's selling it like a billion dollars. I mean it: best suplexes EVAR~! But when Lesnar sets up for the F-5, Kane rejoins the fight, breaks it up, and then J&J get involved, too.

From that point, it's essentially a 4-on-1 attack, targeting Lesnar's left knee (including chairshots to said knee, and wrapping said knee around the steel ring post)... Lesnar won't stop fighting, but he eventually stops standing, thanks to the knee damage.

Kane piles on with a couple more chokeslams, in between a flying knee strike and a Pedigree from Rollins. The Pedigree wraps it up, and Rollins stands tall over Lesnar's carcass, in front of a stunned live crowd, who are all suddenly having to make peace with the fact that Brock lesnar is a babyface, which means he'll have to look vulnerable from time to time.

The boos rain down on the reconstituted Team Rollins as we fade to black....

And so ends the show... and much like last week, the show was just kinda THERE, but man alive, what a finish.

Last week, Lesnar's return was got off your ass and cheer moment. This week, Lesnar getting his ass kicked was more a sit back, jaw dropping spectacle where you kept waiting for the moment you could jump up and pump your fist... and then, that moment never happened.

"Kane and J&J are gonna bail on Seth, and Brock will SMASH." Nope. "Kand and J&J run interference, and Rollins will just run away, throwing his friends under the bus for one last time, so no one will help him once Lesnar catches him." Nope. "Oh, man Lesnar just fought off three guys, and finally got his hands on Seth. SUPLEX CITY, BITCH." Not even close. "Man, all these chokeslams and chop blocks are adding up, but I'm sure Lesnar will Brock Up soon." Never happened.

Last week had a couple "mark out moments" that even smart fans are proud to admit to, because they were instances of surprise elements out of left field. But tonight was a mark out moment of another sort... a moment where I just plain got suckered in. My big fat brain kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, but completely failed to realize WWE's finally admitting that Brock Lesnar is a babyface, and is booking him as such. Which means, he has to be vulnerable.

And so, he was. And it was compelling TV.

The Owens/Cena confrontation was pretty snappy, too. But the rest? Not a whole lot to sink your teeth into... I guess Ambrose/Kane and Reigns/Sheamus were OK, but certainly no better, so it felt like another weekw here WWE just decided they could get away with punting the in-ring aspect of the show. And on the story side, I already hit the two bit highlights (Owens/Cena, and the show-spanning throughline of Rollins getting the team back together and confronting Lesnar)... the remainder ping ponged between forgettable filler (Ziggler continuing to feud with a guy who's one big move is screaming at a monitor backstage) and confusing (what the hell is up with the Bellas changing characters every damn week?).

Still, when the highlights are that strong, and it's the last segment of the night, it's hard to be too salty. I'll slap a final grade of B-plus on this bad boy, and call it a night.

See you in 7, kids.....
