OO RAW RECAP
Retroactive Gravitas
March 24, 2015

by Rick Scaia
Exclusive to OOWrestling.com

So today was "National Best Friends Day," apparently. Or at least, that's what Domino's, Papa John's, and a local sub chain were all claiming when they sent me spam-mail encouraging me to come in and buy lunch for me and my BFF.

I've honestly never heard of this happy crappy until today, and I'll be perfectly fine if I never hear about it again. Is it new? Did we just sincerely witness an attempt by Corporate America to invent a new holiday, and they decided we wouldn't go for yet another holiday focused on the person we are having sex with, and instead force us to buy stuff for our platonic friends? Where the hell did that come from?

I consider you all my very close, personal friends... I just hope you'll enjoy the Absolutely Nothing I got for you. My continued presence in your lives is truly the greatest gift I could give anybody, and I've been giving that to you at least once per week since 1995!

Jesus.... 20 years I've been doing this. On one hand, I am getting old. So very old. But on the other hand, I'll never feel a shred of guilt over all the porn I've stolen or the fact that I'm currently using a borrowed HBO Go password or anything else, because when it comes to the internet, I've given way more than I could ever take in a hundred lifetimes of torrenting.

To continue that behavior, I shall now wrap this up and get on to telling you what happened on tonight's just-completed edition of RAW:

NEVILLE PLAYS "CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE"

We get a cold open, live and in living color from New Orleans, LA, where John Cena is already on his way to the ring... on the continuum of Cena-friendliness, NOLA is coming in towards the chillier side of the spectrum. They are not giving JonJon a whole lot of love as he opens with a hype job for Sunday's Money in the Bank.

He reiterates that he's not a marketing creation, he really does believe everything he says about never giving up and so forth, and that's why he's gonna beat Kevin Owens on Sunday, and even as we (the Cena haters) think he's delusional and make fun of his t-shirts, we know deep down that he's the "face of this place" and he's not going down a second time. Very meta of him.

Enter Owens, who repeats his thesis that Cena is, in fact, delusional if he believes his own BS catchphrases, or thinks he can beat Owens in their rematch. And furthermore, Cena's REALLY delusional if he thinks anybody gives a crap about his US Open Challenge, because Cena's been in the opening segment of RAW about a billion times in the last 10 years, and everybody's sick of him...

So instead, maybe we should kick off RAW with an NXT Open Challenge... the crowd approves. And so does Cena, because he accepts the challenge. He'll face Owens right now.

But Owens says, "Nope, I'm fighting you on Sunday. I said I wanted to give these people something fresh. And that means not you." The two go back and forth over what constitutes and "open" challenge, with Cena saying that when he issues an open challenge, he means it... anybody, any time, any place. So he's laying the gauntlet down: his US Title is on the line, right now, and he'll face anyone. He looks right at Owens and says, "If you want some, come get some."

Owens just shakes his head and says, "OK, here's what's gonna happen: I'm going to ignore everything you just said. You're delusional. Instead, let's both of us stand here, and the next guy who comes down to this ring, we'll let HIM decide which title he wants to fight for." Cena's OK with that.

And Neville is the next man to come on down... he says that with all due respect to Cena, he'll fight for the US Title again some other day. But tonight, he's choosing to face Kevin Owens, because Neville is proud of NXT and thinks NXT deserves to have a champ they can be proud of. And that's not Kevin Owens. Owens is a bully and a jerk, and he's going down tonight!

But not until we take a break to watch some....

KEVIN OWENS vs. NEVILLE (NXT Title Match)

Lilian Garcia delivers the full boxing-style ring intros (and is once again rocking a pair of Thigh-High Boots of Knee Surgery Recovery, lending still more credence to my theory). Also, John Cena has decided to stick around, and joins Cole & The Gang on guest commentary. If you're keeping score at home, it's a modified Cole & The Gang tonight, with Byron Saxton replacing Booker T.

Flashy start for Neville, but after it builds up to a big crazy ass twisting plancha, Owens puts an end to that nonsense and settles in for a heel beatdown sequence. The domination continues for a few minutes until Owens just chucks Neville out of the ring and then gloats about it. Break in the action means we break for....

[ads]

Back, and Owens is controlling Neville with a chinlock... but that doesn't last for long. Neville fires up and hits a big DDT. He's slow to follow-up, so Owens actually recovers first... but Neville ducks when Owens charges, and Owens flies out of the ring. Neville follows up this time (with an Asai Moonsault to the floor that he actually overshot).

Fight spills back into the ring, where Neville's comeback nets him a few near falls. But Owens fires back with a pumphandle brainbuster for his own convincing near fall. Neville responds with a deadlift German (wow!), and heads up to the top rope... Owens rolls out of the way, but Neville lands on his feet. Neville  with an enzuigiri, and he goes up top again.

This time, Owens pops up and knocks Neville's leg out. After one last exchange, Owens catches Neville with the pop-up powerbomb, and that's all she wrote.

Your Winner, and still NXT Champion: Kevin Owens, via pinfall, in 10 minutes. Good work, but there really wasn't any real sense of drama, here, which certainly robs it of any "must-see" value. But solid action, and an effective showcase for Owens, who needs to be kept strong if anyone's to believe he's to beat Cena a second time.

Backstage: Seth Rollins and the Authority are looking at their phones, and getting very angry that Dean Ambrose is going around NOLA with the WWE Title belt, and posing for pictures with fans, and then people are posting about it on social media. Apparently, emojis are involved, as the phrase "pink saxophone" comes up multiple times. I'm happy to be ignorant of all things emoji. Well, mostly ignorant. Even I know about the purple eggplant.

The mutual pissiness eventually results in Rollins asking "What are we gonna do about this?" And Stephanie's all "Uhhhh, who is this WE you speak of? You made it clear last week that you're doing this all by yourself. You don't need us."

Rollins immediately backpedals, and says he spoke in the heat of the moment, but he totally respects the Authority and everything they've done for him, so he hopes he still has their full confidence. HHH smooths things over by saying Yep, we're still behind you, Seth. But we do think that you need to prove yourself to the WWE Universe, so we're totally giving you a great opportunity tonight. Seth Rollins is in action later tonight, and he can pick his own opponent.

Rollins grasps the subtext here, which is "Pick a chump and you prove nothing. Or pick a quality opponent, and you may lose because we're not gonna help." And he's clearly a bit confused over what he should do, as he walks away....

Elsewhere Backstage: Renee Young is standing by with Nikki Bella, and asks her about Paige's comments from last Thursday's SmackDown... Nikki disputes Paige's entire thesis about the Bellas giving the diva division a bad name, and says it's just another case of jealousy. The Bellas have dealt with it since Day One in WWE, and they're so over it. The women who aren't as famous as the Bellas have been bitching and moaning about it for years, and Paige isn't saying anything new. So Nikki seriously doubts she's gonna DO anything new about it, too. This may be Paige's house, but she's still living in the Bellas' World.

[ads]

NIKKI BELLA vs. SUMMER RAE (Non-Title Match)

Yeah, so Nikki's the champ and has a title defense again Paige on Sunday. Summer hasn't wrestled on TV since last summer. You do the math. The only reason this match lasted more than 90 seconds is because they wanted to give Nikki a bit of time to work some heel mojo, to make sure everybody's aware that she's turned.

Your Winner: Nikki Bella, via pinfall, in about 3 minutes. I can state, with authority, that this is a thing that happened.

[ads]

Earlier Today: Dean Ambrose was posting pictures of himself running around NOLA with the WWE Title belt. And here's another one of those pictures. It turns out "pink saxophone" is not an emoji thing: Ambrose actually found a pink saxophone, and posed with it, too. Huh.

SIX OUT OF SEVEN AIN'T BAD

As Roman Reigns heads to the ring, the announcers talk about the MitB Ladder Match, and seemingly confirm that it'll just be the 7 men already announced (not the 8-man configuration that I was assuming). I repeat: "Huh."

Reigns grabs a mic, and looks up at the gold briefcase hanging above the ring. He says, "Man, I spent most of the past year HATING that briefcase. It, and everything it stood for. But it turns out that had more to do with the jackass carrying it around. Because now, I'm looking at it, and I can't wait to get my hands on it. Which I will this Sunday night."

Director of Operations, Kane, hits the ring, also mic in hand. He disputes Reigns' claim that he'll win MitB, because he's been hand-picked by the Authority to "protect their interests," and that means he'll do everything in his power to prevent Reigns from winning. Reigns just smirks and says, Hokay big guy, we'll see about that on Sunday, but tonight, it's Monday and I think you ought to step in here and let me practice punching faces.

Before Kane can respond, Dolph Ziggler's music hits, and he comes on down, with some stilted monologue about how Kane has a lot in common with a hardware store because something something something Kane is a tool. Kane just shakes it off with a line about how "Even the most common household tools can be used in various and myriad sadistic ways, if you get creative." Well, that exchange was a big fat nothing.

And all of a sudden, R-Truth's music hits... he stands at the top of the ramp, surveying a bunch of ladders off to one side, and says that ever since he conquered his fear of ladders at WrestleMania, he's been on a roll and...

"Uhhhhh, what are you talking about?" asks Kane. Truth says he's talking about how he's gonna win MitB on Sunday. "Uhhhh, no you aren't. You're not even in the match." Truth gets a crestfallen look on his face, then just says "Oh, sorry. That's on me. I'm sorry. Carry on. Be good, New Orleans. I'll show myself out." That was funny. Pointless. But funny.

Speaking of pointless, the New Day come out next and say a few words. Then Sheamus puts his two cents worth in. And finally, Randy Orton. Nothing of value is added by any of them. Also, there is no Neville, since he already wrestled and is still selling that.

With everybody assembled, Kane reminds us that Orton vs. Sheamus is happening. And it's happening next.

[ads]

RANDY ORTON vs. SHEAMUS

Match starts, and Orton's out of the chute strong, embiggened by Sheamus' assault from last week. Sheamus has to bail out of the ring. Orton follows and continues the beatdown. Back in the ring for a bit, then Sheamus bails out again. Orton follows again, and keeps the fight out there for a bit, slamming Sheamus into the ringside barricade a few times.

The chickenshittery continues for another few minutes; it's actually pretty remarkable how little offense Sheamus gets over the first 5 minutes. But that finally ends on another bail-out, followed by the cat and mouse role reversal spot as they head back into the ring. About a minute of offense for Sheamus, then he tosses Orton over the top to the outside, and we break for...

[ads]

Back, and Sheamus is working (you guessed it!) a CHINLOCK. Orton tries firing up out of it, but Sheamus snuffs that out, and just re-applies it, asking if we are not entertained. Ummmm, actually we are not. Chinlocks are never entertaining, even when being applied ironically to the Master of the Chinlock.

The beatdown continues until Sheamus makes a rookie mistake by putting his head down early on an Irish Whip. Orton hits is pendulum powerslam, and shows off his newest wrinkle, the T-bone Suplex. Hanging DDT, and Orton is feeling it. He coils for the RKO.

Sheamus shoves him off, and lines up a Brogue Kick. Orton dodges it, and throws Sheamus out of the ring. Orton follows, and the brawl is on. Sheamus gets the better of it, and once again goes for a steel chair (he got himself purposely DQ'd last week)... Orton blocks it, and uses the chair himself. So all that, and it's another intentional DQ.

Your Winner: Sheamus, by disqualification, in 10 minutes. A little bit more substance to the match itself (compared to last week), but not much, honestly. Pretty tepid stuff, leading up to the "good for the gander" booking where Orton did everything to Sheamus that Sheamus did to him last week, including continuing the beatdown for a bit after the match until he can hit his finish in the middle of the ring. Whee.

Backstage: Rollins is looking at more twitpics and getting annoyed. In walk Noble and Mercury. Noble does all the talking, saying that they know Rollins was all worked up lsat week, so they forgive him, and....

"Wait, what? YOU forgive ME? For what? I meant everything I said last week, and you two are are jokes. I made you relevant again, and all I asked for is a little competence, and you couldn't even give me that, so you don't forgive me for anything."

Noble takes a moment, collects his breath, and finally says, "Well, OK, if that how you feel then I guess we've just got one thing to say.... SCREW YOU." The shouting match goes back and forth, and as you probably guessed by now, it ends with Rollins saying that he's picking J&J as his opponents tonight. He's gonna prove how good he is by winning a 1-on-2 handicap match

DOLPH ZIGGLER vs. KANE

No ring intros, both men are already in the ring, so we must be running late, or something. Lana is standing at the top of the stage. Now that she's more Americanized, she's got a new color suit for the first time in forever: pink and shiny.

Pretty much straight into a time compressed "mid-"match heel beatdown by Kane, allowing Lana to give off a vibe of modest concern. That's the vibe for pretty much the entire opening 4 minutes, at which point we have to break for more...

[ads]

Back, and Kane's not working a chinlock. But he is working a bearhug, which is pretty much OO's second least shit-giving hold (behind only the Abominable Stretch). Ziggler fires up out of it, and hits a Fameasser, then a superkick...

And that's when Rusev comes out behind Lana and starts menacing her. She just wants to walk away from it, but he shadows her.... eventually, she decides to jump off the ramp (she's about halfway down, by now, where the ramp is only about 18 inches high), twisting her ankle in the process.

Of course, Dolph sees all this, and is distracted. Kane hits a chokeslam, and it's over.

Your Winner: Kane, via pinfall, in 8 minutes. Match was a big fat zero, but the story they wanted to tell was told. Once the match is over, Ziggler's not so concerned about that, and immediately goes to join trainers in checking on Lana. What a sweetheart.

MIZ IS STUPID

It's time for MizTV, and Miz is actually attired somewhat reasonably. Well, by his standards. He's still wearing a weird hoodie/scarf/sweater deal, but he's actually wearing pants for once. He takes us back to last week, when he was supposed to get a shot at the IC Title, but then Big Show interrupted, and now Miz is contemplating legal action against one or both of Show and Ryback for conspiring against him.

Awkward, since those two are also his guests tonight.

Ryback shows up first, and invites himself to have a seat.  Ryback says the only person who was robbed last week was him (Ryback), because he was robbed of a chance to meathook Miz's face off. Ryback gets a cheap pop by mentioning Damien Sandow and how even Sandow is better than Miz.

Then Big Show hits the scene. He's already got a title shot at Ryback on Sunday, but with Miz and Ryback badmouthing him, he's gonna put his two cents worth in. He starts by saying of all the tag partners he's ever had, he hated Miz the most. From there, Ryback and Show start going back and forth about their match, with Miz trying to stir the pot, and getting shut down by the grown-ups.

So Miz gets all pissy that he's lost control of his own talk show, and pearl harbors Big Show, and then goes for Ryback. Big Show is not amused, and pulls Miz away to hit him with the WMD... but then he turns back around and walks into a Meathook. Then, Ryback tags it with a Shellshock on Show, which is not unimpressive.

LOS MATADORES (w/ El Torito) vs. LUKE HARPER & ERICK ROWAN

FLashy start for the Matadores, but power and brawling win out in pretty short order. Torito gets up on the apron to lead some cheers, so Rowan gets the cheap heat for knocking the little guy to the floor. The other Matadore leaves his corner to check on Torito, so there's no help for the Matadore in Peril.

Harper and Rowan end the match by hitting the 3-D, which definitely pops the crowd (there's even a "We Want Tables" chant after the match when they assault the other Matadore), so if they think the Dudleys are forgotten, they'll have to think again.

Your Winners: Harper & Rowan, via pinfall, in 2 minutes flat. Squashy squash squash. But the use of the 3-D is notable. Also, Harper & Rowan may or may not be known as "The Reapers," now.

Backstage: Rollins is looking at even more twitpics, when Kane walks in. The contentious back and forth includes Kane laying out what happens when he wins MitB... he'll be perfectly happy beating Dean Ambrose for the title, but he REALLY hopes that Rollins is half as good as he thinks he is, and manages to retain the title, so Kane can take it from him.

Obviously, Rollins doesn't think a sweaty, ugly hasbeen like Kane will be able to beat him... but Kane reminds him that he's got a big match tonight, and it just got even bigger: because of Rollins sassmouth, now Kane will be in J&J's corner.

[ads]

TITUS O'NEIL (w/ Darren Young) vs. BIG E LANGSTON (w/ Kofi Kingston and Eggsavier Woods)

A little preview of Sunday's tag title match, here, with the power men from their respective teams. No dilly dallying, right into the heel beatdown, and at the 90 second mark, into the heel resthold. Big E opts for the previously maligned Abominable Stretch, but he gets bonus points for punctuating it with punches to Titus' ribs, int he same rhythm as the New Day Clap. Heh.

But Titus fires up out of that and gets off a small flurry of moves, until Kofi and Woods both hop up on the apron. Young yanks Kofi off, but the distraction by Woods is still enough to allow E to hit the Big Ending.

Your Winner: Big E, via pinfall, in 3 minutes. Nothing to see here. Move along. After the match, the New Day's celebration is short circuited when Roman Reigns' music hits... he's got a singles match against Kofi, and it's up next.

[ads]

ROMAN REIGNS vs. KOFI KINGSTON (w/ Big E and Eggsavier Woods)

This is our third and final singles match between MitB participants of the night. And also, the one that's the biggest foregone conclusion. Yeah, even with the potential for 3-on-1 shennanigans, Reigns is NOT losing this one.

Kofi does get about 90 seconds of offense after a Triangulation of Interference, and Roman puts an end to that fairly quickly. But when the match spills outside, Woods sacrifices himself to a Superman Punch, allowing Kofi to catch Reigns unawares with a baseball slide dropkick.

The New Day decide to celebrate this achievement, while we break for....

[ads]

Back, and Kofi's still in command. Who'da thunk it? Not me. But then again, the better question might be "Who's buying it?" And the answer to that seems to be "Nobody," based on the lack of crowd reaction, here.

Reigns finally starts his comeback, and it gets what might be charitably called a Courtesy Pop. Nobody here is rooting for the New Day, or anything, but they are mostly just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Woods and Big E do attempt one last bit of interference, but it backfires, and Kofi eats a mid-air Superman Punch to end things.

Your Winner: Roman Reigns, via pinfall, in 10 minutes. Not bad by any stretch of the imagination. And I'm a fan of Kofi, too, so it's not like I'm opposed to him getting more time to show off... but I'm also willing to accept the reality of the situation, which is that the fans were never gonna buy into this as a 10 minute match. But WWE insisted on forcing the issue, and that might have resulted in the perception of the match being worse than it really was.

After the Match: Dean Ambrose makes a grand entrance through the crowd. He bought a ticket, and he's also got a soda and some popcorn (and the WWE Title belt), as he makes his way down to a front row seat. Backstage, Stephanie and HHH watch this on a monitor... and Seth Rollins walks in, obviously thinking this is not fair. But Steph and HHH just chuckle and say they can't wait for Rollins to go out there and prove himself to the world. Rollins lingers, and Steph just tauntingly says, "Well? You got anything else to say? I mean, we're happy to help, if you just ask us." But Rollins doesn't want to show weakness, so he just shakes his head and walks out.

[ads]

JAMIE NOBLE & JOEY MERCURY (w/ Kane) vs. SETH ROLLINS (Handicap Match)

It's 11:04 (eastern) when the bell rings, so even though both J and the other J are capable performers, we clearly aren't going to make much use of those talents here tonight. Rollins dominates the opening minute or so, until Kane calls for a conference outside the ring.

Then, Kane distracts the ref, while J&J illegally doubleteam Rollins. He tries to powder out of the ring, but does so on the wrong side of the ring, so he gets popcorn thrown at him by Ambrose. But this mostly just annoys Rollins, who gets back into the ring, and regains control on Noble. Mercury tries to jump in, and Rollins destroys him, too.

Rollins just starts toying with the two, focusing on Mercury, who I guess is the legal man. About 2 minutes of Face in Peril by Mercury, then Rollins whiffs on a corner charge, and we get a hot tag to Noble... he goes on a tear, and actually has fans pretty fired up (even a "You Still Got It" chant), until he decides to go up top.

Rollins catches him and crotches him on the top turnbuckle. Mercury comes in to set off a Pier Three Brawl, but Rollins is firmly in control, hoisting Mercury up and hitting his Turnbuckle Powerbomb, but with Noble trapped in said corner, so both guys are down.

Ambrose finally decides to jump the rail. Rollins watches as Ambrose just saunters up to the ring, and casually throws the WWE Title belt into the ring. Rollins eyeballs the belt, suspiciously, and slowly walks over to it. Ambrose actually steps back from the ring, inviting Rollins to take his belt back...

And he does, but very slowly. So when he bends over to pick it up, he's vulnerable and Noble hits a flash roll-up, and whoa: the ref makes it all the way to three. STOOGES WIN, STOOGES WIN, STOOGES WIN!!!

Your Winners: Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury, via pinfall in about 7-8 minutes. I did not see that coming... or to be more specific, I didn't see that happening quite so cleanly. With Kane and Ambrose out there, I figured one or the other of them would be very much hands-on if Rollins was gonna lose. But nope. Just a distraction by Ambrose and a clean pinfall win. Good times.

After the Match: J&J celebrated their upset win, but did so while retreating. Obviously, Rollins wasn't very happy, so they didn't want to stick around. So Rollins watched them retreat, and then finally decided it was OK to celebrate, himself. Afterall, he finally had his WWE Title belt back!

But not for long. As soon as he held it up and started rejoicing, Ambrose attacked, hit Dirty Deeds, and then walked off with the belt again.  Final image is Ambrose enjoying his ill-gotten jewelry, as Cole makes a final hard sell for Sunday's PPV, and we finally fade to black.

And so ends the show... it's one of those shows where nothing stank; at its worst, a few segments might have overstayed their welcome, but nothing was bad. But on the flip side, there's not a whole lot to sink your teeth into.

J&J's win was pretty entertaining and satisfying, but I'm not gonna insult both our intelligences by pretending like it's something you have to rush out and youtube it if you didn't see it. Now that I've told you who won, I've spoiled pretty much all the fun of it.

And Owens/Neville and Reigns/Kofi were both perfectly decent displays of in-ring action, but neither had any tangible sense of drama... the sorts of exhibitions of skill that you might be able to sit back and appreciate, but you're not gonna be able to get lost in the moment and really ENJOY it. And those were the only two matches that made it up to that "perfectly decent" level. Nothing else made it above utterly mediocre.

If the goal was to just make it to Money in the Bank without doing any damage to  a card that is really shaping up to be a dandy, then fine: mission accomplished. But if the goal was to add any significant degree of interest to any of the matches on that card, then WWE swung and missed with tonight's effort.

I'm not gonna waste any more mental energy trying to come up with new and exciting ways to present my opinion. I'll just bust out my new favorite trick: this clip of NewsRadio espousing the virtues of adequacy.

I won't hang that extra "minus" on tonight's show, but I also can't, in good conscious go any higher than a final grade of C. Here's hoping for better on Sunday night; I'll see you then (shortly after 11pm, eastern), kids!
