ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW: ECW
Not Quite Livin' the Dream
April 30, 2009

by Firewoman
On Loan from the OOWrestling.com Forums

I suppose I could apologize for skipping the recap last week, but when you watch your team get swept, depression sets in.  So there.  And yes, I’m still bitter.

To take my mind off that, I did get to Dayton Friday for Ring of Honor.  A fun time was had by all.  I’m not sure I dig Austin Aries’ new character, but given that he still looks pretty awesome, I’ll somehow manage.  Roderick Strong and Jerry Lynn put on a hell of a match, that had Roderick Strong headed to The Dayton Hospital, conveniently located across the street from the Montgomery

County Fairgrounds) with Jay Briscoe.  [Ed. Note: we do have more than one hospital in town, dammit, so it's not "the" Dayton Hospital. It's merely "a" hospital. That one is called Miami Valley Hospital, and I, too, once had an unpleasant run-in with coppers there. REAL coppers, though; not the rent-a-kind.]

We know this, because we went over there in search of water, since the fine folks at the Montgomery County Fairground declined to provide any concessions staff, so there was nothing to drink except a Pepsi machine outside the Coliseum, which had a huge line, and an increasing likelihood of requiring exact change.  So we went over there after the show because during intermission, some folks went over there and got bottled water.  Score!  Except, we got there, and were questioned by security as to why were there.  So we told them.  And were told (politely) that there is no water here for you well people.  I suppose we could have faked dehydration at that point (and we really were pretty close), but then we wouldn’t have run into Strong and Briscoe walking out front.  I suppose I should be saying “Thank you Hospital Rent-a-Cop, for eschewing common decency and not allowing two women access to simple bottled water.”  Yep.  Not bitter at all.

On with the show.

We open to welcome your NEW ECW Champion….Christian!  Woohoo!  Christian is in his street clothes, so we’re going to get a speech.  Joss Whedon would be proud.  Anyway, Christian says this is the greatest day of his career, standing in this ring, before all his peeps, in MSG, as a champion.  Christian tells Swagger to come on out and interrupt him now, and he is interrupted, but not by Jack Swagger.  Nope, this is one Tommy Dreamer that is coming out.

They shake hands.  Tommy tells him congratulations.  Tommy is glad we finally have a champion that represents everything ECW is about.  But he’s not here just to congratulate Christian.  He’s here to remind us of his promise to win the ECW Championship one more time before his contract expires.  So, he is here, in the building that made him love this business to challenge Christian for that title.  Christian says, sure.  In fact, let’s do it right here tonight.

NOW we get Jack Swagger.  Swagger has crappy lighting on his face, and sounds like he’s been taking lessons in monotone from Jericho, at first.  He claims Christian is only champion because he cheated, and that Tommy is too big of a joke to deserve a championship.  The point of this is that he wants his rematch.

Well, with all these claims and counterclaims, GM Tiffany (who I guess I have to call by her right name now) comes out to sort things out.  She says they are going to have a championship match tonight.  We cue the music, but she hasn’t exactly said who is going to be in the match.  I guess we should assume it’ll be Christian v. Dreamer?

Backstage and we have Natalya combing that goofy thing on the top of Tyson Kidd’s head.

Match 1:  Tyson Kidd (w/Natalya) v. Finlay

I just have to say it.  Tyson Kidd is really excited to be there.  Opening lock up, and Finlay controls Tyson right into the corner.  The ref calls for the break, and gets it.  Back to the center, and Finlay doesn’t care about this Hart Dungeon nonsense, as he takes Tyson down.  Lock up number three, and Kidd still can’t do anything, as Finlay shoulder blocks him down, and Kidd rolls under the ropes.  Kidd stops being a wuss and jumps back into the ring.  Tyson goes up to the top turnbuckle, and attempts a drop kick, but fails, and Finlay grabs his legs.  He flips him over into a single leg Boston crab.  After allowing Tyson to crawl around the ring, Finlay tires of that and gets him back up onto one leg.  Tyson attempts the kick, but Finlay ducks, and Tyson lands face first.  He gets up to recover, and then Finlay clotheslines him right out of the ring.  Nattie looks over him with concern, as we go to commercial.

Back and Kidd is in the ring, and Finlay continues his domination.  He gets a pin for two.  Finally, Kidd gets something going, and kicks Finlay in the knee.  Kidd continues to work the leg, eventually getting it into a leglock.  Finlay counters with a crossface chinlock briefly, but has to release when Kidd cranks down harder on the leg.  Kidd adjusts the lock a couple of times to adapt to Finlay’s counters.  He adjusts into an ankle lock and holds it for a while.  Finlay gets his other leg up, crosses over and does a headstand, then unwinds himself, tossing Kidd across the ring.  Could we call that an inverted hurricanrana?  It’s not enough though, b/c Kidd is able to get Finlay back into a leg lock.  After some hope spots, Finlay kicks Kidd off eventually.  Finlay retreats to the corner.  Kidd comes in and Finlay gets an elbow up into Kidd’s face.  Finlay comes out of the corner swinging.  He tries for a headlock, but Kidd lifts him up, and drops the leg he was working down across his own leg.  Ouch.  He runs back to Finlay, who greets him with a clothesline.  And again to the corner, where Finlay gets both feet up into Tyson’s face.  He goes for a knee drop, but Kidd moves.  Finlay grabs him over the back, and backslides him for two.  He follows up with a clothesline, and then a back breaker over the knee.  Tyson runs the ropes, gets a knee on Finlay, but then goes for too much, as on his next by-pass, Finlay grabs him and hits a power slam.  A pin, and one, two, Tyson kicks out.  Finlay shoulder blocks Tyson into the corner, and tries to set up the Celtic Cross, but he sells the damage to the leg as why he can’t hold Kidd on his shoulders.  Kidd hits a spinning back kick that sends Finlay out of the ring.  He follows him out, and Finlay gets him tangled in the ring apron.  He pummels him a bit and then sends Kidd back in.  Nattie tries to intervene, but while everyone is paying attention to that, Kidd grabs the shillelagh and hits Finlay on the back of the leg with it.  Finlay goes down, and Kidd makes the cover for three.  Winner:  Tyson Kidd (via shenanigans)

Vladimir Kozlov comes out, and oh joy, he has a microphone.  He is dressed in what might be a Russian army uniform.  He says stuff with a really thick Russian accent.  The gist is he is better than everyone.  And that is it, backstage he goes.  Mm-kaaaaay…

Gregory Helms is interviewing?  What the heck?  He’s interviewing Evan Bourne, who is totally NOT reading things off a cue card.  He has “championship aspirations,” but then he’s interrupted by Paul (with Katie Lea) Burchill.  There’s a rematch between Burchill and Bourne on WWE Superstars.  Yay?  Helms hits his “What’s up wit’ dat?” line to the joy of everyone.

Match 2:  Tommy Dreamer v. Christian
ECW Championship Match

We get the full announcement after they get in the ring.  Nice touch.  We show the belts and then ring the bell.  Match starts slowly with lots of grabs and counter grabs.  It’s a fairly steady pace, with lots of back-and-forth.  We pick up the pace a bit, with Christian bouncing off the ropes, and sliding under a big boot by Dreamer, and then hitting an enziguiri.  He covers Dreamer for barely 1.  Both men are up, and Dreamer whips Christian in to the corner.  Christian goes through the ropes and as Dreamer follows him in, Christian hits the Fulcrum.  Dreamer staggers back, and Christian tries to set him up for the Killswitch, but Dreamer counters by trying to set up the DDT, which Christian also counters.  Now they lock up with some meaning behind it.  Tommy gets Christian in a headlock, the whips him into the ropes.  Christian bounces back into a shoulder block, and Dreamer pounces on him for a one-count.  Christian throws a right roundhouse, but Dreamer catches it (as it is the silliest fighting move ever) and gets Christian into position for the second Backslide of the night.  Christian does kick out at two tough.  Another exchange of whips across the ring and Christian grabs the rope in the corner and lifts his legs up. Tommy comes underneath and grabs Christian for a slam to the center of the mat.  He covers, but it’s not enough.  Christian retaliates with the Bitchslap of Disrespect.  And we go to more commercials.

And, we’re back.  Tommy tries to shoulder block Christian in the corner, but Christian moves, so Tommy shoulder blocks the ring post instead.  Christian grabs Tommy’s arm and gets him in an armbar.  Tommy “Dreamers” up, and gets vertical.  He gets out of the hold, and tries to set up Christian for a DDT, but Christian easily counters for his own DDT.  Christian covers and only gets two.  Christian keeps working the arm and shoulder.  Christian hits the top turnbuckle, aims, and missile dropkicks Tommy, with one foot to the “chin” and one to the same shoulder he’s been working.  Christian pins, but no, it’s still not enough.  He goes back to working the arm.  Christian lands a few punches, then yanks the sore arm down to get Tommy to the mat.  Christian goes up top again, but before he can get all the way, Tommy starts to join him, with a Bitchslap of Disrespect of his own.  Both men get…almost to the top, and then Superplex!  Hard to say who is hurt more by that.  Both men are down, and the referee starts the count.  Tommy recovers a little and is able to crawl over and put an arm on Christian.  One…two….NO!  Christian gets his arm up.  Both men are standing, but not for long as Christian knees Tommy, and then beats him back down to the mat with three double-axe handles in a row.  After selling a back injury for a minute, Christian gets Dreamer up, whips him into the ropes, but Dreamer bounces back with a boot to Christian’s head.  He follows this up with a clothesline that sends them both out of the ring.  The referee begins another count out.  Dreamer is in the ring first, but Christian just barely gets in too.  He goes up top and jumps, but Dreamer catches him with a fist to the stomach that makes him do a flip in the air.  Dreamer clothelines Christian, then gets some decent offense, ending in a neck breaker.  He covers for two.  Christian goes to the second ropes, and sunset flips Dreamer, but then Dreamer counters and pushes Christian over for two.  Then Christian covers and does the same thing for two.  They break, and Tommy sees an opportunity for a roll up, and does so, for two.  Some more offense later, and Tommy gets Christian in the tree of woe, but before we even get to the “E-C-Dub” chant, Jack Swagger enters the ring and messes things up.  The referee calls for the bell.  Winner:  Christian via involuntary DQ.  Swagger does his signature moves on each, and then we cue his music.
