ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW: TNA IMPACT
TNA: Not Polluting Rivers Since 1987

When 30 Rock debuted, I wasn’t interested. If SNL hasn’t been funny in about 15 years, why would a show about SNL be funny? Then the Office lead-in kept me watching one episode long enough to see Alec Baldwin's impression of Tracy Morgan's whole family and I decided the show was worth watching. And, thanks to Salma Hayek’s capacious casaba melons and this week’s Harry and the Henderson riff, I’m glad I did. But I’m also confused.

Tina Fey has been held up as this shining example for womanhood, a woman who could be known more for being smart and successful, than for her (not as good as everyone says) good looks. Yet her show doesn’t have a single, strong female character. It makes sense that Tina would give herself a crazy, neurotic character (who is somehow skinny despite her insane eating habits), but why is every

other female character incredibly stupid and narcissistic? And why has no one called her on this? She’s like the white, female, Tyler Perry.

I can’t comment on the quality of Perry’s projects since I would never watch that crap, but I can’t understand why he’s treated like the next Bill Cosby. Even Oprah hails him for showing Black families in a good light. Again, I’ve never seen anything he’s done because it looks horrendous, but judging from the commercials his Madea movies are about an insane Black woman who tries to solve all her problems with violence. That’s hilarious and inspiring! And his House of Payne show appears to be about a family of stupid, insane, pre-diabetic losers that everyone should aspire to. Maybe it’s just that they don’t rap?

And speaking of things that don’t make sense, let’s see if TNA’s storytelling has gotten any better on

A STIFF PUNISHMENT FOR THE GODFATHER

Jeff Jarrett started the show by announcing that Kurt Angle has been suspended and his weekly salary has gone to a good cause.

Lethal Consequences came out wearing shiny new suits and Lethal did a nice Flair imitation. “Hilariously,” Jarrett’s good cause is The Frontline. Wait, they still exist?

TNA’s Worthless Announcer Angle continued when Don West returned, said he still had a job, and then faked apologizing to Tenay only to swerve us all by saying he still hates Tenay. Tenay then made his disgusted face and showed what a professional he is by taking shots at West (including a timely Hudson plane-landing reference). It seemed like Tenay might be the heel announcer when he compared West to Sojourner Bolt who turned her back on her mentor, Kong, but eventually it turned out that West was now the Pro-MEM voice. Despite this “stunning” and “entertaining” change to their chemistry, Tenay and West still managed to be annoying.

Mick Foley came out to talk to Sting. First, he thanked Sting for helping make his career and talks about that same match he mentioned in Hardcore History. (This makes no sense. Either he’s thanking Sting for letting him beat him, in which case he’s acknowledging that wrestling--and every thing on this show--is fake, or he’s rubbing it in Sting’s face that he whipped his ass) Then he uses this as a segue to beg Sting to leave the Mafia. Then the Mafia, sans Kurt, show up to tell Sting that they’ll get through this no matter who wins at Destination X but Sting flips out because he’s still not getting respect from Kurt.

The Knockouts had a four corners tag match of Kong/Saeed vs Beautiful People vs Taylor/Roxxi vs Bolt/Raka. The match was a total mess and served only to highlight the sloppiness of the weaker Knockouts and reveal that Madison Rayne is now a Beautiful Person. Whoopee!

Alex Shelley and Kiyoshi had a nice X-title match, which was eventually won cleanly by Shelley. Then Suicide came down for no reason and attacked the Guns.

Dr Stevie and Abyss had another therapy session, where Abyss broke down the relationship between Tom and Jerry before promising not to use weapons anymore.

Shane Sewell’s Push seemed to come to a screeching halt when he was destroyed by Matt Morgan, even though Early Hebner politely turned his back so Shane could hit Morgan with a low blow. After Morgan won with a hellevator, he cut a promo running down Abyss and challenging him to a 10,000 tacks match. That should be awesome considering I can’t even remember what happened in their last match.

Kurt Angle showed up in defiance of his suspension, found out that Lethal Consequences and Eric Young had bought nice new suits with his money, and went apeshit. In 3 different segment, he attacked Creed, Lethal, and Eric Young, and none of them were saved by their Frontline teammates. How odd. The Frontline dynamic got even odder in

TNA’s worst segment this year. It all started when Booker T was on the phone setting up some sort of ambush for AJ. Then Book and Steiner went to the ring and AJ was dumb enough to show up. After dodging a beatdown and escaping with the Legends belt, AJ didn’t notice some cops in Swat gear come out of the crowd to arrest him. But wait, one of those cops was actually Samoa Joe. Was he hear to help AJ, his Frontline teammate? No! He completely hung AJ out to dry so he could pull a Samoan trible knife (there’s plastic in Samoa) on Steiner! But the cops were too busy dealing with AJ-a wrestler who had attacked another wrestler-to worry about someone impersonating an officer and assaulting someone with a deadly weapon so they just left. Meanwhile, Tenay thought it made perfect sense for Joe to pull out a knife and Don West was so upset that he walked out. Then we got to hear Tenay talk about how he’d been disrespected for the rest of the show.

Cornette took Booker’s Legends belt, according to Mike Tenay. This makes perfect sense considering that the belt is Booker’s personal property, not an actual title belt.

LAX accepted the Off-the-Wagon challenge and had a nice match against Beer Money. After dominating most of the match, LAX won by DQ when Beer Money attacked with chairs. So, no title for them but no one’s fired either. Then Team 3D, who didn’t seem to care when their Frontline teammates were all being assaulted/arrested, decided to help LAX, who’s not affiliated with them in any way. Then, after acting cocky through Team 3D’s ensuing promo, Beer Money was stunned when Ray finally got to the point and challenged them to a title shot. I’m not sure how they didn’t see that coming. I’m also not sure why LAX is totally okay with getting thrown out of the title picture.

Jarrett finally noticed that Angle was going too far by assaulting everyone. Instead of suspending or firing him, and even though it was only about an hour after he announced he wasn’t a wrestler anymore, he decided that he would beat Kurt’s ass. Sting then woke up and noticed that Kurt was going too far and asked Jarrett to just let Kurt do whatever he wants because Sting would make it all alright at Destination X. Jarrett said no way, spent another hour wrapping his wrists (seriously, 1 hour to tape his wrists) and showed up just in time for a main event brawl against Kurt. The brawl sucked and it ended when Jarrett threw Kurt out of the IMPACT zone, coincidentally just in time for the end of the show.

Final Thoughts

Meh. We had a couple of decent matches in there and the first MEM/Sting promo seemed to be going in a good direction but everything turned to shit once Angle showed up. Why do they continue to act like the Frontline is an actual stable but refuse to have any of them work together? And they continued their nonsensical cop angle, their idiotic knife angle, and the completely boring and pointless announcer angle. Maybe they’ll wrap these all up at Destination X and then start new, sensible storylines. Or maybe Jarrett will hit Sting with a guitar, join the MEM, and keep this going for another 6 months, at which point Sting will get his title back at Bound for Glory and none of the younger talent will have been elevated at all by this whole silly angle.
