OO FEATURE COLUMN
Checking in from Texas
November 7, 2003

by Scotty Szanto-Nicodemus
Exclusive to OnlineOnslaught.com

Well, I guess all it takes to get me to crawl out from under my rock is a slow news day in the middle of OO’s pledge drive.  (As an aside, YOU might owe ME for that plug, Rick!)  Anyway, I figure that I would try and dust off the old “Random Topics Column” and see if I couldn’t help Rick have at something for the weekend.  So that is how it has come to this, with you reading this instead of doing something worthwhile!

How it has come to be that I haven’t posted anything in around two months is a bit more convoluted (and boring) story.  I last posted at the beginning of September, just before my sister arrived for a brief visit the weekend of my wife’s birthday.  My plan at that time was to put a recap together during the next three weeks or so before I went on a vacation of my own for two weeks.  Obviously that didn’t pan out.  The tape is still sitting next to my TV, JAPW Memorial Massacre.  Yep, there it is.  I wasn’t able to watch it because Amey and I had agreed to be in a community theatre production, and rehearsals and stuff for that ate up all of my free days.  Not to mention practicing on our own, and you can see where most of our time was going.  It would’ve been worth it, of course, if we had actually put the play on, but everything went to hell in a handbasket (as they say) during the last week or so before we left on our trip.  Now that we are back, my life is beginning to approach some semblance of normalcy and I will probably get around to recapping that JAPW show before too long.  I’ve also got an XPW DVD that Amey and I picked-up at Best Buy a few months ago, not to mention a few other tapes that have sat unwatched for some time now!

Because after all, this column is supposed to be about wrasslin’ and not about me!  To wit:

  • I saw the Ironman Match between Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle.  I don’t think there’s much I can say about this match that hasn’t been said already, so I will just say “Frickin’ awesome” and leave it at that.  I don’t know if it was the first time I’ve ever seen someone intentionally give-up a fall via DQ in this type of match, but it was a great twist that really added to the drama of the match, and helped to solidify Lesnar’s position as unbeatable.  Tremendous match.
  • I haven’t seen much WWE programming since that match, actually.  Or at least, I haven’t seen anything memorable.  I had RAW on while I was doing other stuff the night that Kane was in the limo crash.  Other than that, I haven’t seen more than a few minutes of any RAW in well more than two months.  As for SmackDown!, I’ve only tuned into it once or twice in recent memory, and I just don’t remember anything about what I saw…except that I know there was a Rey Mysterio match.  I can only say that because I remember seeing his intro where he comes shooting up through the floor.  My Thursdays might start to become more open now that we are not doing the play, so we’ll see.
  • We upgraded to the cable with Roadrunner and a DVR, but I have yet to record any of the WWE shows.  I also have yet to explore the local access channels to see what is available…the cable is out of San Antonio, which is not exactly a hotbed of indy-wrasslin’.
  • San Antonio does host the periodic ETW (Extreme Texas Wrestling) event, and hopefully we will be going to one of their shows soon.  We had met a dude that said he went to the ETW shows whenever they were in San Antonio, but he’s the type of guy that never calls, apparently.  It’s been more than two years since the NWA Anniversary event that we attended, the one that I wrote the huge Preview and Recap for, and that was the last live event that I have been to.
  • Warmest wishes to Steph and Triple H on their recent nuptials.  Ignoring the “ramifications” that their wedding will have on the industry, let me just say as a happily married man that I hope the two of them are very happy together.
  • So Sting was on TNA’s show this week.  I didn’t buy it, although I am keeping my options open for next week when the X-Division will be featured in multiple matches instead of a Battle Royal.  In fact, the last time that I saw any TNA was the week before the 1-cent show.  That played a direct role in why I have been a little disillusioned by writing wrasslin’ recaps in general.  You see, I had this grand plan to watch the last show before the 1-cent show (which featured the Super X tournament), and then also watch the 1-cent show and write a column about what I liked and didn’t like about TNA six months after I stopped recapping their shows.  That was back when we had DirecTV, and they did not offer the 1-cent show.  I was super pissed-off, and in fact, that helped us to decide to go with cable when we did.
  • Speaking again about my new cable box, I think that the first WWE program that I record will probably be the special this weekend on Road Warrior Hawk.  I first started watching wrasslin’ on Saturday mornings shortly before the Road Warriors debuted in the NWA, and I still contend today that they are my favorite tag team of all time.  My condolences go out to his family and friends, as well as the legions of fans that he had around the world.  Rest in peace, Hawk.
  • In more uplifting news, but only barely related to wrasslin’, I bought an RVD lighter a couple of weeks ago.  I don’t even smoke, but it’s always good to have a lighter around, and when I saw RVD staring at me from the store counter, I bought it on impulse.  He might never have held the World Title in ECW, but he was always the guy most likely to have his picture on a lighter someday…and since I don’t smoke, the lighter should be around for a nice long time!
  • Since I’m on the topic of ECW, I might as well tell you that I have plans for this January to do a big history of ECW column.  I haven’t decided exactly the format that I will be going with, but I want to do something for the anniversary of their last PPV.  More on that, as they say, is to come.

With that, I think that I am outta here.  Like I said, my life is finally back to a relatively normal pace, and so I will get back to watching a little bit o’ wrasslin’ here and there, and before long I will be back here to tell you all about it.  Until then…

PEACE
