THE RING
From A to CRZ
November 4, 2002

by The Immolator
Exclusive to OnlineOnslaught.com

"Why make the past/your sacred cow?/I guess you've changed,/you've changed, and how"

— ABC, “That was Then But This is Now”.

Bringing you thoughtful insight and intelligent wrestling journalism since, well, never, this is The Ring. My name is “The Immolator” Calum Macbeth, and I like to hurt people.

You may notice that Christopher Robin Zimmerman, or CRZ to us bandwidth-eaters, told us last week in his RAW Recap that he’s done. Finis. Kaput. No mas. Which means it is in the realm of possibility he means it this time, and CRZ… is… WALKING!

I can’t remember when I started reading his stuff. I believe it was back in the days of Wrestlemaniacs, but I might have been exposed to his work even earlier, on rec.sport.pro-wrestling. I liked it so much, when Online Onslaught (V2.0) resurfaced last year, I threw my name into the hat to do Heat recaps. That became a SmackDown! gig, which I then abandoned when I got bitten by the worst strain of the wrestling bug.

It’s not much of a stretch to call wrestling a disease. Wrestling consumes the viewer. If you like it, you watch every damn hour of it you can, you visit all the web sites, and you may even wear some of the merchandise (preferably the Calum Macbeth T-shirt, coming soon). Crossing the line from viewer to commentator is a highly advanced form of the disease. It took me ten hours to complete a single SmackDown! recap. I’m not sure how fast or slow that it compared to CRZ, but why not head over to slashwrestling.com while it exists and consider how much time and effort he must have put into that body of work.

For those of us who’ve been on the Net for a while, CRZ’s departure leaves a giant hole in the WWW of wrestling. There are plenty of talented writers out there, of course. But CRZ has been around forever, and he’s never sucked. He’s Terry Funk. He’s Ric Flair. He’s Gen’ichiro Tenryu and Mil Mascaras. He’s… Jerry “Champagne” Morrow!

He’ll be missed.

As for me, I’ve still got a bit left in the columnist tank. A move to Hokkaido is more and more likely. Stay tuned to this space, because things are going to get very interesting in the near future, as I amp my workouts by about a thousand fold. Sink or swim time for Yours Truly.

Peace.
