OOfficial Discussion Thread for: SmackDown (November 8, 2019)

Tonight on SmackDown: WWE is in the United Kingdom, because honestly, is there such a thing as TOO MUCH trans-Atlantic air travel? Per usual, this means the show started taping at 3pm (eastern US time), and so if you're so motivated, you can find the results/spoilers by now....

WARNING: you'll also be spoiling Monday's RAW, which is also being taped today...

But we'll play along with the charade that SD is live, and so just a quick listing of segments WWE has previously hyped: (1) the Revival vs. the New Day for the SD tag titles.... (2) Roman Reigns vs. Boring Carbon... (3) Sasha Banks (no doubt w/ Bayley) vs. Nikki Cross (hopefully w/ Alexa Bliss, who has been MIA lately with a shoulder injury)... and (4) Tyson Fury appears for some reason, and I'm sure it'll to do with Braun...

The first two matches were originally scheduled for last Friday, before the Saudi Debacle, so the fact that WWE feels the need to re-do them means they must serve some larger storyline purpose (it's easy to guess at a possible tag title change, as the Revival continue to hold out on signing new contracts, but I'm much harder pressed to figure out what makes Reigns/Corbin so vitally important)...

Survivor Series is 2 weeks away, so more clarity on the format of the show (how many elimination matches, how much NXT involvement, etc) should be forthcoming... a challenger for Bray Wyatt's WWEU Title is probably the major issue to address.... and as far as NXT goes, it'll be interesting to see who (if anyone) flies in from Orlando, or if WWE makes do with representatives from NXT-UK....

That is all. End communication...

The flOOr is yours, OO Nation. Don't wait till after 10pm to post, either. Pre-show previewing and prognosticating is certainly welcome. So discuss, debate, and rate!

If he wasn't stuck in midcard purgatory, The Miz would be my number one pick to go after Bray. He'd be the best suited to exchanging words with funhouse Bray, he could sell the hell out of the Fiend, interview the puppets on a special edition of Miz TV, and would probably do his own version of the Funhouse.

Meanwhile Reigns and Strowman would probably just give us the standard ''I ain't scared of you!'' tough guy promos and not much else.

Dude, this is the best idea I've seen on here in a while. I'd give a few bucks to see heel-ish Miz cut a promo along the "I hate your freak-ass and your stupid puppets" vein. Maryse can show up and bring the hot, too.

Unless I missed something, it seems like the spoilers aren't quite lined up with the actual show. Since it sounded like Heavy Machinery responded to Imperium showing up, but I think what just happened (not paying 100% attention at the moment, to be fair) was Heavy Machinery came out, got attacked by Imperium, and then a bunch of others ran out to chase them off. But if the end of the show is accurate, I think I can safely ignore the rest of the show and get back on top of catching up on other TV.

Oh, I love legitimate theatre.

Figured The Revival wouldn't roll into SS as Champeens. Dash n' Dawson would have been a better fit for an all NXT call-ups/current NXT Champs match, but Kof-E are definitely the flashier choice. I guess.

Is Sami injured or sumpin'? Why don't he make with the kicky-punchy no mo, eh?

Lol, Shorty G is bigger than anyone in UE and most errbody else in NXT.

Hey. Hey. Spoiler no spoilin'! Wait wait, so yer tellin' me zee Germans invaded?

Wonder if they had to call an audible there. Almost looked like Dash got injured for real from that Kofi splash the way he grabbed at his leg before the commercial break.

Track-suited Eurotrash attack, led by large GERMAN! Take that, redneck goofuses!

Guessed right on the tag title change, but otherwise....

Wow, what a yawner.

I was trying -- naively -- until the final moments to come up with the "good ending" that would make that main event worth our while. I came up with "The Usos return and The Bloodline becomes a full time thing."

And then *plonk*, nothing. DUI Uso probably still is not allowed overseas, so actually, that one is one me. Still, I repeat: *plonk*

That said, the brief moment of thinking about the Usos and the genesis of a 3-on-3, which could easily be expanded into a 5-on-5 if they kept up with the "Reigns is a lockerroom leader"/"Reigns has lost the lockerroom" debate, led me to this idea:

(1) SD has its own men's 5-on-5.
(2) RAW has its own men's 5-on-5.
(3) NXT has its own men's 5-on-5.
(4) We bring back the ultra-rare old-school Survivalest Series match, where the winners of the 3 elimination matches do battle in one last eliminations match. In this case, the survivors of SD vs. the survivors of RAW vs. the survivors of NXT. It'd be a hell of a way to get to a neat 2 vs. 2 vs. 1 dream match scenario (or 3 vs. 1 vs. 1 if you want to tell a story of an overwhelming favorite), and a proxy for which brand "wins" the night.

That's 4 matches, which is the only problem. We already have Brock/Rey, Becky/Bayley/Shayna, a women's 5-on-5-on5, New Day/Vikings/UE, and presumably Bray/Bryan on the docket. That's getting quite snug for a 4 hour show.

I'll take a Bray vs Bryan feud. Lots of history, they have one of the greatest show openers to their name, and Bryan, like Miz, is a dynamic performer who can be a great foil to Funhouse Bray and the Fiend.

Plus, Bryan is one of the top babyfaces who'll have an easier time keeping the crowd on his side.

Corbin missed a great crowd diss when he called Romanís bite is like a chihuahua. He shouldíve made a corgi joke.
Also, when Corbin said Roman wasnít there yet and was out granting some sick kidís wish I was waiting for Romanís music to hit and Roman coming down saying that he did get a sick kidís wish and that wish was to see Roman kick Corbinís ass.

What a bland show. Canít think of one thing I cared about.

Psst, I didn't see this part until now, but I found those, too.

Also, FOX has to be thrilled with their investment thus far, right? I mean, in order they got:

-An anniversary show where WWE brought out all the stops.
-A followup draft show where WWE didn't seem to know how drafts worked and kinda made both networks look stupid for their stupid pick decisions.
-A very average show that kind of just was there
-A show WWE very likely phoned in because they got moved for the World Series
-A show that was the best WWE show in a while because of the fact the majority of the roster got stuck in another country, so another network's show's roster filled in
-A UK-taped Smackdown that WWE usually phones in because "not 'Murica!"

Fox is paying what, 4 million per show and is winning the demo. NBC is paying at least that for an episode of The Blacklist and is not winning either the demo or most viewers.

So yeah, FOX is likely happy.

Oh and this weekís show saw an increase in viewers and rating for the key 18-49 demo.

Is there room for growth? Sure. And Iím guessing WWE and Fox will want better numbers for the January to April build to WrestleMania. But as long as the show keeps doing well in the key demo and attracts ad revenue, all parties will be happy.

Worst case scenario is the show gets cancelled, nobody wants to pick it up, and folks go back to RAW or NXT. The WWE can cut costs, run less shows, and still be profitable.

And fans have 2 less hours of wrestling to watch every week so maybe there will be time for Powerrrr, Impact, or MLW. Or WOW. Or Pornhub.

Dammit I keep forgetting only we actually care about the quality of the shows, and barely at that.

I feel they're missing a good opportunity for Baron Corbin with the brand warfare. The closest he's come to a stand out character was in NXT. The former NFL player who had to start from the bottom in NXT and gradually getting pissed off that a bunch of guys coming from promotions he's never heard of were getting the red carpet treatment. Anti-Indy Corbin was fun.

The feud with NXT could add a few layers to his characters as a guy whose personally invested in beating the Yellow Brand as he feels they held him back while he did a lot better on the main roster.

I mean, I read the spoilers for SmackDown and watched the Raptors over SmackDown and will likely do the same for RAW.

Iíd gather a lot of Smarks did the same.

But hey, sorry for the reminder that we are a niche part of a niche fandom. On the plus side, you get to see my Trish avatar again.
