OOfficial Discussion Thread for: AEW/NXT Wednesday Night Fight (October 23, 2019)

AEW vs. NXT SNAPSHOT
AEW Weekly Viewership Wins: 3
NXT Weekly Viewership Wins: 0
Current Streak: AEW 3 week winning streak
Average Total Combined Weekly Audience (including replays/streaming): N/A (hopefully I will be able to find a reliable source for these figures in the near future)

LAST WEEK'S WEDNESDAY NIGHT FIGHT
Live Viewership: AEW 1.0 million > NXT 700,000
Total Viewership (including replays and streaming): N/A (ditto)
Which Show Was Better in OOur Expert OOpinion: AEW
Micronalysis: NXT was very solid, but lacked any real sense of urgency (even punting one major match via a no decision). Meantime, AEW loaded up the big guns and mostly delievered, including a compelling AEW Title main event.

THIS WEEK'S WEDNESDAY NIGHT FIGHT

The "pay off" to last week's punt will see Roderick Strong defend the NXT North American Title against both Dominik Dijakovic and Keith Lee. Keep in mind, the title shot was originally to go to Velveteen Dream, but he was taken out by Undisputed Era, and could also be back this week. [And of course, with NXT's next Network Event being WarGames, we should all be on the look-out for teams of four gelling to oppose UE.]

Additionally, Rhea Ripley and Bianca Belair face off in what should be a really tremendous match, and a de facto #1 Contender match, to boot.... we are promised still more revelations regarding Finn Balor's agenda... and Pete Dunne is now fighting a two front war against both Damien Priest and Killian Dain...

AEW counters with a more modest line-up than last week's, headlined by Jon Moxley facing PAC; last week, the former Ambrose and Neville were tag partners, but that went up in smoke when Mox prioritized using foreign objects over winning the match.

In support of that, we can expect some kind of interaction between AEW Champ Chris Jericho and #1 Contender Cody Rhodes, as their PPV showdown is 10 days away (also, all their affiliated goons, henchmen, and associates)... both semifinals of the tag title tournament take place tonight (Private Party vs. the Lucha Bros, in particular, ought to rock).... and the Young Bucks face the Best Friends in a battle of ousted tag teams (one presumes this exists for the Bucks to re-establish themselves after the unexpected first round job)...

Overall live viewership for both shows has declined every week (although I am still unable to track down reliable total viewership figures for DVR/on-demand/streaming), which needs to level out, pronto... tonight might not be the best night, given it's Game 2 of the World Series, but we shall see...

That is all. End communication.

That was an exceptional amount of flippage. Also nice still being able to follow Pentagon and Fenix after LU's probable demise.

Primo Ladybusiness on NXT. Rhea has... it. And I hope they accelerate Bianca's timeline so they can get her with Montez ASAP 'cause she's just as charismatic as he is. They'd be a nice counterpoint to Blandy Lynch and Seth Dullins. Lol, WWE name puns. Oh me.

Also, I was unaware Tyler Bate is only 3 feet tall.

ETA: Also2, for shiggles I highly recommend watching AEW and NXT simultaneously, but then keep the volume up on one then watch the other with that one's sound off. It's a delight when the action on one show inadvertently synchs with the commentary of the other. Tony and JR sound great in NXT.

Also3, please don't tell anyone I live like this.

Also4, Riddle/Grimes was dooooooooooope. Bro's always in a lot of hard-hitting matches. Be neat to see him and Goldberg go at it at some point.

Also maybe worth muting both shows and throwing some porn on in the background to see if THAT synchs up.

I DON'T BELIEVE YOU.

Also, I'm guessing Breezango's new thing is doing a new entrance every time? Because that's amusing. And Fandango has turned into George Michael for some reason.

Edit: I really like the concept of a dentist wrestler being accompanied to the ring by a sports mascot.

I wonder what the rules are now and especially going forward for showing togetherness pics of legit partners/spouses in regards to cross-promotion relationships (e.g Moxbrose/R-Paq, Peyton Royce/Tye Spearsenger, et al.) because in the hype video for Britt Baker, D.M.D. they just showed her with Adam Cole, B.B.Y.

My initial hot steaming four-flushing Janny-take: AEW cares not. WWE cares a lot.

I've always been a fan of The Little Things (.... No Janerd, that doesn't mean what you think it means). Tonight's Big Little Thing is when Chuck Taylor hit the Falcon Arrow on a Buck, and the Buck kicked out. JR "Excaliber" Schiavone (my way of conveying that I don't remember which announcerguy said it) shouted "NOBODY kicks out of the Falcon Arrow", and almost immediately after that you could see Chuckie T telling the ref "NOBODY kicks out of the Falcon Arrow!!!"

Amazing.

I was kind of hoping Moxley would additionally DDT the cameraman just for shits and/or giggles.

Aw. Switched back to NXT hoping for a few minutes more of the NA match, but then get an immediate finish. But hey! THE PROPHECY. Starring Christopher Walken.

I love still not being used to Ciampa's music. My first reaction was "wait, they brought Taz(z) back to challenge Cole?"

Edit: Hahahah. I was expecting Ciampa to turn on Gargano, thanks to my limited knowledge of their prior issues. Apparently Balor gets the honors! And the honor of flying through a barricade.

Kind of ironic, but tonight, AEW basically did what I accused NXT of doing last week. Good solid outing: strong in-ring (but sadly kind of predictable/lack-of-urgency) tag wrestling to start, but capped by a flat-out punt of a no-decision that sucked any major joy out of things. *thud*

The cameo from DDP for the mid-show brawl was really the only thing that scores an extra point.

Meantime, tonight was a night when I finally suspect NXT would very much appreciate your patronage. Strong top to bottom, great main event, and the finish with Balor is now the reigning "best final segment" after 4 whole weeks of Wednesday Night Fights.

Not only was there a WOW factor for tonight, but it sets up all kinds of possibilities and chances for us to speculate. The last WarGames actually expanded to 3 teams, instead of just 2, and so it's very much notable that Balor showed no signs of aligning with Undisputed Era. If anything, he quietly rebuked them.

You could easily get to a UE vs. Pure NXT Faces vs. Balor Shades of Gray Club WarGames match... the pure face team is almost assuredly DIY with Velveteen and a +1... but Balor gets way more interesting; and it all comes down to how permanent his little group is gonna be.

Balor + Priest & Dain would mean you add Dunne to the face team. Breezango turning heel to join Balor would be kinda awesome (in that case, they turn on Kushida or Swerve, who joins the face quartet). And Finn doesn't seem like he'd shy away from the challenge of trying to "make" some no-name guys from the NXT undercard; his coattails are surely mighty.

Great showcase for the women tonight, too. I'm stoked for Asuka and Kairi showing up next week to defend against Team Kick.... also next week, Io vs. Candice, which is probably the counterpoint to tonight's excellent Rhea/Bianca match. Surely, one of Ripley, Io, or Candice gets the Takeover title shot against Baszler, right?

Probably put Lee vs. Dijakovic Part XXVII on the Takeover undercard, too. I mean, 1 win each and 3 draws (counting tonight as a draw) is about as far as we can milk it.

It'll be interesting to see how "elastic" ratings are next week. This is basically the first night where I feel like NXT gets the strong win in terms of "buzz," but whether or not that translates over to changes in viewing habits? No idea. Especially because we still have no guidance on how much of WWE's audience is still just watching NXT on-demand when it goes up on the WWE Network on Thursdays.... my gut says it's probably a lot, based purely on the inexplicably out-of-whack demographics of the live ratings. But who knows?

I highly, highly doubt it will happen, but what are the odds that AJ, Gallows, and Anderson join up with Finn for one night only at War Games? Would the ring even be able to handle the awesomeness that would be the Undisputed Era vs The Club vs Ciampa/Gargano/Dream/Whoever?

And that was a fantastic main event tonight (it was basically TakeOver quality), with the ending segment providing a great "holy shit!" moment. Four weeks into NXT vs AEW, I'd say that was the best moment produced by either show thus far.

Also, Riddle/Grimes definitely shouldn't be overlooked either. That was a great match and I like Riddle more and more every time I see him wrestle. I'm digging Grimes too, and he kind of looks like the love child of Daniel Bryan, Shawn Michaels, and Danzig.

My brain did drift to the vague notion that "demoting" Gallows & Anderson would be kinda neat and maybe even plausible as a one-off. But my brain did not fly too close to the sun and ponder that awesomeness.

Now, you have made my brain ponder it, and I cannot unponder it. You bastard.

I mean, from AJ's perspective, it isn't event THAT crazy. He is the ONLY guy in the business to have been on top in all of the different places he's been. WWE, NJPW, ROH, TNA. But he just skipped the level with NXT. Maybe he wants to scratch that itch, so he can say he's the only man ever to headline shows for every single major promotion of the current era?

I think the fact that Balor didn't seem to give a shit about Ciampa but kept going after Gargano points to Balor going on a solo crusade against Johnny Wrestling. Could be NXT's version of Hogan vs Rock.

The former top face being bitter and jealous at the guy who now holds the torch.

Also, fucking hell WWE, if you were willing to turn Balor heel you should have done it after WM when Seth Rollins was desperately needing new challengers and stuck in a neverending feud with Corbin.

That NXT main event was awesome. Match of the night but I think AEW won again but only because the middle of NXT was weak. And I’m all for time limit draws (every once in awhile) but not like tonight. Just felt weak.

I saw that ending coming on NXT, or so I thought. With War Games coming up I figured Ciampa was going to be joined by Johnny, Balor and Velveteen. Johnny came out (check).....Finn came out (check)....VelveWHAT THE HECK? They threw me for a loop and that whatever it was on the ramp that Finn gave was just as bad looking as what Daniels took last week. Crazy bump.

I taped both but started NXT first. The first two matches were great (really dig Grimes) but then I switched to AEW and never went back. The woman’s match was ok and I wasn’t totally thrilled with Dark Matter or whatever they’re called but the rest was just about PPV worthy. Then I finished NXT and I just didn’t care about the Sons/Breezango match (although I like that Swerve guy) and I don't care about Kai/Nox against Duke/whatshername. That main event, though....

Caught that, too. When Excaliber said “He Head them off at the pass” I wanted someone to say “I hate that cliche!” No dice.

Kinda think UE-Balor/Priest/Dain/Djakovik-DIY/Dunne/Lee could work or DIY could team with Dunne and Bate or Dream while Balor/Priest/Dain could also get ??? if they want to give the Lee/Djakovik feud a send off but I have a feeling, like First9 said it’ll be Balor and Johnny one on one. Maybe DIY/Dunne/Bate-UE-Velveteen/Swerve/Breezango?

Or something, I dunno.

I realize they're kinda painted into a corner as far as Ciampa is concerned but is it REALLY that smart to take your guy returning from a major injury (who has a
history of major injuries) and place him in freakin' WARGAMES?! Just sayin'.

I watched a minimum of each show as I unfortunately opted to watch the Astros (hometown Houstonian here) get their doors blown off by the Nats. I thin we're fucked.

I will say that the beginning of AEW was so refreshing - No show-opening promo...no "commissioner"....just a kickass tag match between two of the best teams today.

I would argue that the 4-member teams provide a bit of cover. 3 others to take any sick(er) bumps.

I think I just give up. I think AEWs been okay to good all 4 weeks, but none have really been even close to approaching how good I've found all 4 weeks of NXT. Over the course of a month, with each show averaging 5-7 matches a show for about 50 total matches, I think NXT has the best 15-20. Last night's "best" AEW segment featured 3 guys all approaching or over 50 years of age. The three tag matches were solid to really good and the main was pretty good too. Omegas match was okay and the less said about AEWs women at this point the better. Meanwhile, the NXT main was next level great and lead to an amazing segment. The first woman's match was good and the women's tag was still better than AEWs and that's with 2 of the worst women wrestling in NXT. The six-man tag was good. I just don't think NXT has even had a letdown match over the last month.

Really liked Cody's comment to Jericho that unlike the company they used to be in, there’s no “invisible wall” and he can leave the ring to go up there to beat his ass right now! It made me think that he was right, I can't remember the last time someone left the ring to go confront an adversary in the nose bleed section.

The in-ring action in both promotions is really good. I just feel the story telling is better in AEW.

And I found that comment to be typical Cody who really comes across as a bitter neverwas anytime he does anything that references WWE. I get that I don't see the star power others do with him, but each time he acts petulant that he wasn't a star in WWE, I lose even more of the idea of the chance he could be a star. And I gotta be honest, what storytelling in AEW is jumping out at ya because Ciampa coming back for his belt, Finn coming back for the belt and now to destroy Johnny Gargano, the UE prophecy of getting and holding the belts, the chase for Shayna, Dream losing the NA belt and what he does next, Lee & Dijokavic fighting to be the best hoss are all miles better than Jericho and his bubbly, a non-existant woman's division story, a mostly random tag tournament (though I will give credit for Lucha/SCU), and whatever Moxley being random is. On the positive side, they have built MJF, Darby, and Janela relatively well. And I suppose I was curious where they were going to go with Omega's "losing" streak but that even took a blow when they announced he beat Fenix and became AAA Mega Champion.

The Cody/Jericho/DDfuckingP segment was about the most interesting thing I've seen out of AEW so far, at least in terms of the traditional wrestling chicanery/fuckery outside the ring. NXT just has the superior energy though IMO. The NXT women alone are worth more to me in terms of entertainment than the AEW women and most of the AEW men combined are. Ripley/BelAir, Top Gun Breezango, and heel Balor by themselves were about ten times more fun that the last two weeks of AEW.

So still need to watch AEW...but question, who has AEW highlighted like Keith Lee and Donovan Dijakovic? Darby? Page? Because I can see Don or even Lee being Universal Champion or WWE Champion after the past couple of weeks.

Not like tomorrow, but I can see a path for either guy.

Also, I really want to see either one vs WALTER.
