Favorite Video Game Music

Over in the Music thread, some of us have been engaging in a Favorite Artists thread, and video game music was mentioned. Let's talk about our favorite video game music!

G Jonah Jameson mentioned Nobuo Uematsu the songwriter for the Final Fantasy series, and I 100% agree. His stuff is magical. My favorite songs he wrote were in Final Fantasy VI - so much so that I bought the Final Fantasy VI Grand Finale CD back in the day.

and my favorite song from the game is Terra's Theme:

Anyway, there's a lot more, but I don't want to spoil the fun. List your favorites! Make it a top ten, or a non-ranked list, or whatever. And yes, it's totally ok to put Tetris Song A on your list.

I'm about to head out the door for work and probably won't be on the computer much this weekend due to other obligations, but rest assured I'll be making a more in-depth post in this thread when I get the time!

Also, excellent pick with the Final Fantasy VI soundtrack, as that would definitely rank in my top ten favorite video game soundtracks ever.

Oh, I've got a hell of a lot more to say about this when I have some free time, but I wanted to remark on a couple things here, since Final Fantasy VI has come up. And I know I'm the one who mentioned Nobuo Uematsu, but I didn't specify a game, and FFVI is my favorite -- both for music, and in general. I always had an appreciation for video game music, going back to my first playthrough of Super Mario Bros., but FFVI was the first time I noticed it being used to evoke a mood, rather than just set an atmosphere. The opera scene absolutely blew me away. I remember getting mad at my brother for interrupting it, and him not understanding why I cared about this one scene so much, and why wasn't my character throwing a fireball or something? Still one of my favorite game scenes ever.

ETA: I'm also playing through FFVI right now, for the first time in probably 15 years (I lost the SNES version, so I only have the PSX version; I remembered the load times as being really bad, but they don't seem so bad now, so maybe I'm just more patient now). And it reminded me really, really quickly why it's my favorite. I can only play any game a little bit at a time, and it's always a bitch putting this one down.

Yeah, Final Fantasy VI is amazing and the soundtrack is top notch. It was pretty much Square at the height of their powers and even though an argument can be made for Chrono Trigger being better, I'd say FF VI is the best RPG they've ever produced.

And here are some of my picks:

Quite possibly my favorite music ever from a video game is from Bubble Man's stage in Mega Man II.

A couple from the Donkey Kong Country series, both kind of similar in tone, but super atmospheric and awesome.

It's hard to pick one favorite from the Final Fantasy VI soundtrack, since the whole thing is so damn good, but Rachel's theme always tugs at the old heartstrings.

Like Final Fantasy VI, it's really hard to pick a favorite from Chrono Trigger since the whole soundtrack is awesome, but I always dug this one.

Taking it back 8-bit, this theme from Castlevania II is dope as fuck.

I think that the inclusion of most of the tracks from other Final Fantasy games is what made Final Fantasy XV a favorite of mine the most: it got its own music pretty right, but just in case someone wasn't a fan, you had all the rest of them right there at your disposal (Final Fantasy XIV uses a good amount of music from 6 due to random inclusions of Ultros, Magitek, and the Phantom Train (the actual Phantom Train and not just the game's version of it)).

Of course, if we're going with ones that stuck with us, I can always point to this one and the fact that fight with those friggin' dolls was a nightmare of mine for much of the early 90's:

"The Seahawks are cool. Me and Tubby here hung out with them once at a Bruno Mars concert."-Jay and Silent Bob representing the Broncos on FOX NFL Sunday.

I love the main Zelda theme and its many iterations. It sounds full of adventure and discovery even from the original 8-bit version and it sounds majestic in the Ocarina of Time and later Zeldas.

But my very favorite Zelda theme is the Dark World theme in Link To The Past (and it's remix in Link Between Worlds), closely followed by the dungeon theme of Adventure of Link.

I'll put up links to the themes later when I'm not at work.

I'd consider the main Zelda theme, along with the level 1-1 music from Super Mario Bros, to probably be the two most important and iconic pieces of music in video game history.

I've written, rewritten and revised my list of favorite video game music multiple times. I even made a couple of mixtapes of video game music in high school. That's how cool I was.

My current list, through multiple revisions over time, is now at 150. As a rule, I only include songs from games I've played, so I can take into account how well the song fits in the setting. There's one sort-of exception: I've not played Ikaruga, but the tune I chose from it appears in I Wanna Be the Guy, which I have played. You can see this affects which types of games and which consoles are included; for example, there aren't any Xbox games, because I don't have an Xbox and rarely play games on one (not to mention, there came a point when modern-day game music stopped impressing me). Beyond that, it leans a lot more heavily toward upbeat than melancholy, and there's a whole lot of boss music on there. I'm even able to throw in some humor every once in a while.

I'm not going to embed 150 videos, but I'll do my top 10 in a subsequent post. Up to that point:

Here's my top 10.

10. The Instinct (Killer Instinct)
Just the opening and character select themes, but it sets a good tone for the game. This soundtrack will always have a special place in my heart, because a CD of it was included with the SNES adaptation, marking the first time I could listen to video game music without having to sit in front of the TV.

9. Battle Under the Arctic Ice (Critical Depth)
Lousy game, great soundtrack. Singletrac could make some great music even when they forgot how to make good games; Rogue Trip, which appears a few times above, is another example.

8. Aria di Mezzo Caraterre (Final Fantasy VI)
The aforementioned opera scene.

7. Bob-omb Battlefield (Super Mario 64)
Set the tone for what the next generation of Mario games could look and sound like. Almost unbearably cheerful.

6. More Fighting (Final Fantasy VII)
An epic, hard-rocking boss theme. During boss battles, I'd set the ATB to "wait," open the item menu and just sit there listening to the theme.

5. Under Logic (Streets of Rage 2)
I don't know if Yuzo Koshiro has been discussed yet, but the man was a wizard with a 16-bit processor. If you ever wondered what kind of music should accompany a brawl at a baseball stadium...

4. Magus Confronted (Chrono Trigger)
This boss fight is perfection, and the music is a big part of it. It's almost a shame that it's only the halfway point of the game.

3. Antenna Cradle (GoldenEye 007)
Makes me want to chase after someone at full speed. Someone on YouTube should set the opening chase scene from "Casino Royale" to it.

2. Field of Screams (Twisted Metal 2)
Bunkhouse Battle Royale: The Theme Song. The funny thing is, this Southern rock tune is ideal for the rural setting of the stage, until you remember it's supposed to be in Holland.

1. One Winged Angel (Final Fantasy VII)
Another example of Nobuo Uematsu doing something with video game music that no one had really done before. I vividly remember beating the penultimate boss of FF7, wondering if it was over, then hearing this start up and thinking, "Oh, shit just got real."

One of my favorites - the main board theme for Devil's Crush:

Turbografx-16 version:

Sega Genesis version:

The main board theme for the Japan-only Super Famicom sequel, Jaki Crush

Metroid had some great music - very unlike anything in game music at that time. This one is my favorite: Kraid's Lair.

This gal plays it on piano and it sounds really nice

Super Metroid has great atmospheric music as well:

Metroid Prime's version of the title screen theme is fantastic as well:

The first level of the arcade Shinobi is this cool music that's both parts ninja-tactic and funky soul.

Speaking of Sega - I love the theme to Space Harrier. It feels like you're flying through the air at light speed.

Here's the Zelda themes I mentioned in the previous post.
Dark World from A Link To The Past

the two versions from A Link Between Worlds are great too:

and the Palace theme from Zelda II:

Here's another great Zelda theme. Gerudo Valley from Ocarina of Time

Bonus points to G. Jonah Jameson for going above and beyond the call of duty, and for having some pretty outside of the box choices.

And I can definitely tell that salmonjunkie and I came up during the same era of gaming, because those Zelda/Metroid tracks are among some of my favorites (though I wasn't as familiar with the non-Nintendo stuff, but dug what I heard).

This is a man who knows what he's talking about.

And just to share a few more:

Banjo-Kazooie is my favorite game of all time and Halloween is my favorite holiday, so this track is a match made in heaven for me.

All of Final Fantasy IV's soundtrack is amazing, but dear god nothing takes me back to 1992 and being 11 years old like this track.

Well, except for maybe this one:

Keeping with the Final Fantasy trend, I funnily enough have never played Final Fantasy IX, but know this track from the Final Fantasy Theatryhthm games on the 3DS. There's just so much damn emotion packed into two minutes.

For more PS1-era Square greatness, I love this one from Chrono Cross.

The Castlevania series is chock-full of awesome music and I've always loved the intro to Castlevania on the N64.

I have a special place for the Street Fighter II themes, particularly the ones for Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Guile, Vega, Fei Long, T-Hawk (even though his character SUCKS), and Akuma. Lot of good themes throughout the years - And I've really only played the SF2 and SF Alpha series. But I've enjoyed the many versions of those themes in the sequels. I was listening to some on youtube the other day, and man, The Street Fighter V renditions on some of those themes kick ass!

I'll edit this later to add the links - I can't link to youtube from work, unfortunately.

Also, cosign on the love for the music for the Mega Man series and Castlevania series. So much good music has come out of those two series.

Yeah, this is tough... so many choices. Trying to remember as much as I can off the top of my head. I'm sure there are easily 100+ I've either forgotten about or blanking on at the moment.

Major props to GJJ for specifically listing The Moon theme from Ducktales.

A ton of the stuff I would pick has been listed already. A lot of the iconic things like Zelda, Mario, etc. all go without saying.

First off, I'd say just about anything from Sonic 1 & 2. And Mega Man 2/3/4... especially:

Marble Zone
Spring Yard Zone
Star Light Zone

Casino Night Zone
Hill Top Zone
Sky Chase Zone

Air Man's Stage
Metal Man's Stage

Magnet Man's Stage
Snake Man's Stage
Gemini Man's Stage

Ring Man's Stage

Besides the main Zelda theme, my two favorites are both from Ocarina:
Kakariko Village
Sarita's Song

I'll throw a few dark horses out here too:

I know for fans of the series, Final Fantasy XIII was a major plonk, but I absolutely loved the battle theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfu0XBf8kmk

Braid was a little indie puzzle platformer that came out around 2010ish. The theme for the first world is amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiWXrVXOMAU

I still really like the intro theme for Life is Strange. Simple, but fit the game perfectly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3W0M8SVmk0

Is everyone mad here?
Of course they are, and you are too... otherwise, you wouldn't have come here.
