Owen Hart Died Twenty Years Ago Today

Today is the 20th anniversary of the tragic death of Owen Hart.

Most of us can vividly recount where were were and what we were doing when we heard the news.

Ironically, I found out about it on The Rick's old News From Dayton site, and I remember watching it that night on the news.

His death still reverberates today in that he is not in the WWE HOF due to his widow's hatred of Vince McMahon.

The whole thing sucked and still sucks.

RIP Owen

ETA:

Here is a pretty good article with some info I wasn't aware of:

"I don't watch the show, Paul. Why would I watch the show?"

"I hate it when I'm watching along at home and I'm envisioning certain common sense things, and WWE just leaves all that money on the table to do something that will have no result other than send viewers looking for something else."

Today is my birthday.

Over the Edge 1999 is one of only two PPV's in the 90's that I didn't watch live due to the fact I was out celebrating my birthday. I started watching it spoiler free in the morning with a bastard of a hangover, but it soon disappeared when I saw what happened. I went straight on to wrestleline at that point and saw the news. Fuck.

I watched the rest of the event in a daze.

My birthdays always remind me of Owen.

I watched the PPV at a bar with a bunch of friends. From the moment JR announced his death to the bar closing none of really knew what to say.

It was a long night.

Minor correction. Vince shouldn't be allowed to make money off of the memory or image of someone he killed with one of his stupid ideas for a spectacle. Martha Hart is the only one who's been clean, and stayed clean, in any of this since Owen died. If anything Vince should be in prison for (a) Snuka, (b) steroids, (c) Owen, and (d) what mostly likely happened to Ashley Massaro. The regular pleas for Owen to be inducted into the bogus HOF of a fake fighting company is just a tactic WWE deliberately uses, by stirring it up in the IWC, to get fan anger redirected from themselves for what they did to him and aim it at Martha.

On a lighter note, the Owen Hart Foundation made by Martha is still going strong.Opened in 2000, providing scholarships and supporting other charities in Calgary.

So even if he never joins the HOF, Owen's name is already part of a much more meaningful legacy.

Wow. 20 years.

I was going to a job interview the next year and the news fucked me up and I didn't have the best interview ever. I didn't get the job, but did end up working for the company I interviewed with a few months later and moving to near Chicago from Cleveland. I wonder what might have been different if I wasn't a mess that first interview.

At the end, I really don't blame WWE as much. Stage shows and WCW were doing similar stuff all the time. I really blame the amateurs the WWF hired to do the work because they really, really didn't know what they were doing. I guess in that sense I do blame the WWF. Also, I wish Owen had spoken up that he wasn't comfortable doing it. The whole thing was and is incredibly sad.

Jerry Lawler posted on his Twitter the clip of him and JR announcing during that PPV that Owen had died from his injuries. Still can't watch that clip all these years later, or most of the Owen tribute show either. Still bothers me too much. Like, literally too

Yeah, it was Eddie not Owen. Stupid.

Is everyone mad here?
Of course they are, and you are too... otherwise, you wouldn't have come here.
