I really like how the surviving kids from this school are reacting. I don't remember seeing a reaction this strong from survivors before. This makes the optimistic part of my hopeful for the future. I'm getting very tempted to attend their March on DC.

I don't wanna get my hopes up, but one of the key things to remember here is that this happened during an election year and many of those affected will be of voting age this year. If there's any time to do something like this, this is the time.

This sort of thing gets my hopes up:

So far, Parkland is *not* fading from the news the way that mass shootings usually do. (The graph shows Google searches for the term "gun control".) The students speaking out makes a pretty big difference.

In other shooting nooz n' views: I spoke with my buddy whose nephew was at the school when shit went down. The family didn't hear anything from him for a while because he didn't have his cell phone on him when a teacher got a bunch of the kids in his classroom. Apparently the kid said the teacher said to get in the room and stay there until the cops came to escort them out. When the cops eventually came to clear the room and take them out they had to walk past his body while leaving the room.

And the Florida House voted down the motion to consider an assault weapons ban, with some of the students there watching in attendance. However, they did declare that porn is a potential health risk.

You never fail to disappoint me, Florida. Enjoy November.

Wisconsin GOP, not to be out done by Florida, took a bill the Democrats submitted to create universal background checks and made a couple of small changes.

They took out the part about background checks and replaced it with money to pay for armed guards at schools.

They did this while students from several schools were there in attendance.

That's like really big of them, coughing up some cash for a few guards that will be paid the same rate as someone working at McDonalds. I was assuming that the Austerity Hero GOP are as disinterested in paying for school security as they are in funding proper mental illness health care. Golly, looks like I was wrong.

The thing about guns in schools, even in the hands of a teacher, a security guard, or even a police officer assigned to schools is what does that teach children about society... that they are going to grow up under the watch of a gun. Throw in the metal detectors a lot of students have to pass through each day and school is starting to look more and more like a prison; all in the name of safety.

What does that do to kids to grow up like that?

I was watching a PBS show called the third rail online the other day and I thought the topic was kind of neat: is violence part of the American DNA? They meant it figuratively of course, but it was food for thought... this was a land taken by violence, a country born in blood; shaped by wars and violent expansion, funded in part by violent oppression ... a country where the contrarian term "gunship diplomacy" is a part of its trade history.

Is violence as much a part of the American identity as manifest destiny and the American dream?

One commentator threw out an interesting theory: When viewed through history most other countries got democracy much later... they started with a king, kings don't generally like well armed populations that can over throw them, then those countries added democracy over time... so it was kind of earned; yeah violence sometimes played a part, but there was an evolution that went hand in hand with it.

His argument was that America was democratic right out of the gate; that violence went hand in hand with their democracy so that now you have this armed noble protector image, whereas other countries kind of have this nobility to them... to find other solutions first, or take stock; whereas America is all about the quick action.. be decisive and final in your approach.

Fitting how a company called Dick's Sporting Goods seems to have a pair of balls. They're pulling all of their assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines. They're also raising the age of gun sales to 21.

So, for those who said we need to arm teachers:

A teacher in Dalton, Georgia barricaded himself in a classroom with a gun and fired it once. No injuries, no idea if this guy did this to prove a point or was just a crazy guy.

Incredibly depressing quote from a student at the school:
quote:
It’s been happening everywhere. I’ve always kind of felt like eventually it was going to happen here too. I wasn’t surprised, I was just scared.
We’ve now reached peak freedom I guess, where high school students are becoming just resigned to the notion that one day they’ll be opened fire upon in class.

Guess we all need to make sure that we have more guns for safety and freedom.

While this is a good start, the age of 21 hasn't meant much to kids who want to get drunk and convince people to buy liquor for them, or kids who steal alcohol from their parents' liquor cabinets. Yes, both of those things are legally-wrong, but soooooo fucking what? Kids drink themselves to near-death (and sometimes beyond 'near' on college campuses semi-routinely. Anectdote time! When I was in college, we'd just get a 19 year old (the legal drinking age in my part of Canadia) to call a delivery service with a big shopping list of booze (usually including whatever the 19 yr old wanted to drink, cuz it's just more efficient that way), and make sure the person with the valid identification met the delivery driver with the money. Voila. A dormitory wing suddenly "legally" supplied with enough alcohol/beer/liquor to get puke-drunk.

If "assault-style" (or even 'regular' rifles and handguns) weapons are somewhere in the 'wild', they can end up in the hands of the wrong people (be that criminals or angsty teens). You can't rely on "Oh, people will respect the age limit" to prevent things. Destroy any & all weapons of a certain type (whichever ones are statistically the most dangerous, like assault-style/sub-machine pistols/etc) and then they literally can't end up in anybody's hands. Anybody who wants an AK-47 has to build it themselves, and will probably die at their own hand when firing the weapon due to shoddy craftsmanship. But who am I kidding? This won't happen anytime soon because MUH FREEDUMBS ARE BEIN' TRAMBLED BY THE GUMMINT. (typos intentional)

Basically more kids have died than active service members in the US.

I’ve seen several tweets and articles about this, hoping it’s debunked. Not because I hate military men and women, but because I just don’t want it to be true.

That's from the Washington Post, not a Facebook meme, so it probably isn't going to be debunked. If there's a mitigating factor, it might be a comparison to previous years. How many members of the armed forces die in combat in an average year? Is it always lower than victims of school shootings? Or has this been an especially good year for servicemembers' safety? That sort of thing.

It's entirely possible the story answers those questions. I'm over my free article limit for the Post on my phone, so I can't read it.

This is not usually the case. In 2017, the number of fatalities among service members was far higher than the number of people killed in school shootings, according to The Washington Post data.

Well, that answers that question then.

I'm aware of the various incarnations of Incognito Mode, but I have trouble getting them to work properly on my phone. The Washington Post is getting smarter, too; those modes don't fool them forever on my computer.
