AJ Styles Beats Kevin Owens for US Title

At a house show at MSG Styles beat Owens to become the US champion. Title changes at non-televised events are rare these days, but MSG shows are still considered "big deals" so it's not completely surprising.

That's wack heading into another SD PPV in two weeks. Injury or drug test failure on Owen's part?

The WWE should do more of this, even outside of MSG... I'm not saying do it once a month or anything like that, but the odd mid card title change at a house show from time to time makes house shows a bit more must see, and meaningful as anything could happen at them.

I've long advocated the WWE introducing some kind of ranking, or points system for titles- and the brand split would have been a good change to pioneer that for at least one brand to see how it could work out. If you had something like that it would mean the house shows would mean a bit more, overall wins and losses would mean more, and it could help you with generating both new stories, and views on your website as fans could track peoples records on WWE.com. As a bonus, much like how the WWE has reconditioned us on chair shots being devastating, they could use a system like this to "reset" tired finishes by phasing out cheating, intentional DQ's, and stuff like that because there would be genuine consequences. You could even go full boxing/MMA, or whatever and attach stuff like purses to certain matches to add some incentive to win, or hold a title in addition to the prestige. You could still have your grudge matches outside of stuff talked about above, but now a throwaway match, or house show could have some meaning to it.

Anyway; rankings aside the title change at a house show is a good thing; I know that next time the WWE is near me now for a house show I might be a bit more tempted to go see them because hey... who knows, anything could happen... and that's a good thing.

The only thing Owens is testing positive for is Popeye's. They have those Cheddar Biscuit Fried Shrimp now, y'know.

Probably just something to liven up a feud that was kind of stagnant, build a little buzz, make it more personal heading into Battleground. Plus it gives AJ another shiny trophy to put on his resume.

Sets up the obligatory rematch at Battleground and then potentially let's them move on to something else at Summer Slam. There's been a rumored Styles/Nakamura match there which this could be paving the way for.

Definitely with Flash in regards to spicing up things with an occasional house show swerve. Word around the campfire is that WWE is using this as a way to goose sales for house shows in general, and for MSG shows in particular. Apparently with the recent overhaul of MSG, the owner of the building (who I guess is the owner of the Knicks and Rangers as well) has ramped up the broadcasting fees for the venue, leading to WWE pretty much relegating MSG to just house show fodder.

That, coupled with the fact that Barclays Center is the new hot ticket in town has led to some less than sold-out performances at MSG on recent loops. Sounds more legit to me than any of the blatant rumor-mongering going around in less reputable circles that WWE is somehow "upset" with Kevin Owens (for what? being one of the most reliable performers on the roster AND having the hottest selling video release in recent memory?) or "sending a message to NJPW" with their recent crowning of Kenny Omega as their US Champ.

I say good for AJ, and huzzah for making good on the long-dormant promise that "ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION WWE!!~!1" It's nice to know that house shows CAN matter.

I honestly just wish that WWE would just bite the bullet, or strike a deal on the MSG broadcast fees and just air the house shows that take place there as Network Specials alá Beast In The East or the Live From MSG special they did a while back. A prestige format house show, aired live on the network 3-4 times a year would be a blast free from the trappings and tropes of RAM and Smackdown. Make it a barebones callback to Clash of The Champions.

Title changes hardly take place on free TV let alone on a house show. I am fully on board with the random house show title change.

It definitely would help things along. Part of the problem with WWE's product these days is that even the weekly television shows don't feel important, so imagine what that does to the casual audience who don't see house shows like we do/might (a place to see performers cut loose a little, unfettered by the micromanagement of a weekly tv show.)

10-11 months out of the year, a "good" year at least, WWE is on cruise control. Providing minimal surprises and seemingly going out of their way to hand-hold viewers with video packages and "earlier tonight" replays as they trudge from one brightly lit, see-it-from-a-mile-away narrative checkpoint to another. There's no real sense of immediacy to the product anymore. No real hook to keep you tuning in live (or at the very least not wearing out the fast forward on your DVR remote) every week for anything other than a PPV. And that'll probably change too, sooner rather than later, because the business model of PPV's for both brands EVERY month has led to them meaning less and less with rehashed feuds becoming more and more common place. (I'm pretty sure Miz and Ambrose started feuding around the same time Eminem and Christina Aguilera did.)

WWE's goal to be accessible to everyone, with minimal immersion in the product required, has really brought about some of their most stagnant creative work even when they're currently blessed with the most talented roster they've ever had. What we have now is TV shows that don't really matter to prop up repetitive PPVs and house shows that are really just now a touring production of a tree falling in the woods.

Big Show commented on Jericho's podcast last week that he much prefers the house shows. They guys actually get to wrestle and have fun with the crowd. He didn't bother to disguise it much that there's generally not the best feeling about the TV broadcasts, especially RAW, because they have to go through whatever idiot routine that Creative has come up with for the week, as well as the interminable commercial breaks and having to navigate the minefield of whatever mood Vince and his catamite are in. Big Show probably isn't an untouchable, but at this stage of his career with maybe a year left until he retires for good there probably isn't much doubt that if he says these things he's kind of speaking for everyone.

Batista has pretty much said the same thing in the past as well; that he'd love to come back for just house shows as you get to have fun with the crowd and the boys free from all of the BS of TV days.

Man, am I glad to not be in college in this day and age.

Maybe he's actually a Kanamit.

For the record, I always pictured Vince and Dunn as Simon and Man Servant Hecubus.

It's probably more like Dunn is the Steve & Edie to Vince's Sinatra. Right you are, Chairman!
