I just finished watching NXT Takeover. It was a solid show all around. I thought Asuka and Ember Moon had the best match of the night.

I wanted the title matches to end with the Authors of Pain, Ember Moon, and Bobby Roode as champions. I got the complete opposite. I don't mind SaNiTy winning nor Asuka retaining, but if I was going to pick any of the undefeated champions to remain undefeated champions, I would have gone with the Authors of Pain.

As soon as the main event ended, I was disappointed in the result. Drew McIntyre is the first NXT Champion that I don't think is worthy of the honour. He's nothing special in the ring and bland as can be. If his title reign was done to promote Bobby Roode and quickly transition the belt over to Adam Cole, then I can live with that.

It might have been a botch but Lars pushing through No Way Jose's clothesline looked great. I think that could be an awesome big man spot if timed better.

Overall, Lars is developing at a great pace and I can't wait to see him have hoss-offs against Braun and Brock.

Yeah that was a great spot, and totally agree about his development. Also the Black/Dream segment was one of the best promo segments on WWE in a very long time.

I feel like we're heading for another peak in NXT.

I love Lars! His eloquent monster gimmick is great and his old school look is fun. I'm not sure he's -quite- as big as he should be - No Way Jose looked not much smaller, if at all - but he has a good aura of menace about him. Not super crazy about his finish, but that can be tweaked with time.

Adam Cole is little. I don't want to harp on this too much, as god knows I've been a believer in pushing Finn Balor as a heavyweight. I fully believe in smaller guys having the potential to do main event things and be top guys. And he definitely has charisma and can talk and has good presence.

But man, I had not seen him very much because I only catch RoH rarely if at all in recent years and he is just...smaller than I had expected.

Also: Roderick Strong is SO FUCKING TERRIBLE at promos. He's very good in the ring, but oh my god, he should never, ever talk.

Hey, I have a question as someone who is an infrequent watcher of NXT:

Is it better or worse than when it first started?

I mean when NXT first became a "thing" it was loaded with talent that you KNEW would end up on the main roster and be big stars and the writing and storylines were excellent.

Is that the case now?

They're in a similar phase to the Big E era with a few stand outs you know will be a big deal but also a fair amount of unpolished acts still finding their footing and. The women's division is being rebuilt, with the imminent departure of the AoP soon the tag ranks will need to be put together again, and the main event scene is solid but not as gripping as in other years.

The critically acclaimed era where the main event scene(Sami Zayn's chase, Owens' reign of terror, Balor's dominance) and the women's division peaked together(rise of the four Horsewomen) is still untouched. But I consider that era to be on the level of RAW 97 and SD years under Heyman as some of the best week to week tv wrestling has ever produced.

I like that it's WarGames. Without getting very spoiler-y: I like the casting, too.

There hasn't been a WarGames since our current understanding of how to stack a gimmick match.... there are still people who bitch and moan when a Kane or Mark Henry gets put in a Ladder Match, and shit like that.

But you have to pick your participants with an eye towards doing ALL the spots. Not just the Meltzer-approved grapplingsmanship ones. You can't do that without bigger/power guys representing a different style.

They put the Authors of Pain in there, which I suspect will get a few groans, but it only adds to my sense of "Ummm, whoa, this is gonna have all of the different awesomes." Meantime, the Undisputed Era are your standard internet workrate darlings, and sAnity are ultra-versatile master keys who can unlock virtually any scenario.

WarGames gonna be good.

The upcoming women's match for the title automatically became totally manic the second Nikki Cross won the final spot in the four-way. Odds are that Kairi will it but having Cross participate turns it into a potentially classic slobberknocker.

To put my spin on this as a regular - its in another golden era now. NXT is at its best when you see the stars break out. The main event is set for fresh matchups, but the real gems are in the undercard. Rather than try to tell you what to like, I'd say just watch it. The build to a new womens champion, rebuilding of the tag division (Montez Ford has "IT" by the bucketload) Angry Lars and the Dream/Black angles are all great TV.

If the Cruiserweight division sticks around, Lio Rush might be a pretty big deal when he gets called up, because he's SO FUCKING FAST. He got kinda squashed on last night's show, but that's fine, Dream needs to build some credibility before Black kicks his face in at Takeover.

Oh, so THAT's where Lio Rush went. (Seriously, somehow I missed that news.) Man, they grabbed him up pretty quick, relatively speaking? Good for him, and I hope the cruiserweight division/show profits from his (perhaps-eventual) addition.

Some of these NXT names are just the drizzling shits. Good thing Puff Daddy already marketed Danity Kane for a crappy girl pop combo before WWE got there first and gave it to some 6' 7" 350-lb black dude who can lift a John Deere riding mower right over his head.

The Velveteen Dream- Aleister Black feud is pretty good, despite me having very low expectations. Patrick Clark didn't impress me much before his glam makeover, but he seems to have grown into the character more and more. Him popping up behind Black during his entrance was pretty awesome. Black's still gonna kick his teeth in at Takeover.

Speaking of that entrance, they really should put Black in the Rumble this year just to give people a taste of it. Dolph may bitch about people getting over on entrance alone, but Black's is -awesome- and he can back it up. I suspect they're going to keep him in NXT longer than that, but he's ready for the big stage now.

Speaking of ready, man, I was glad to see Nikki Cross get in that title match. I think she's probably the least likely winner of the four, but she's so great and I mark for her over almost any other woman in the E these days.

He just got his teeth kicked in, but damn did he look good in there with Aleister Black.

Long live The Velveteen Dream.

Yeah, that match was straight up great. Dream's come leaps and bounds from where he was just earlier this year. He's got so much character and charisma and he's DIFFERENT, which is something WWE desperately needs. Great match, great story, both guys come out looking like stars. That's how you do it.

Great action so far. Very entertaining.
Just every result has been so predictable as usual with NXT.

Still a good watch. Crowd is hyped.

I mean, of the first three matches, I got two of them wrong in my picks. I thought Ohno would get a win but get beaten down afterwards. And I picked Peyton for the women's belt, just because I thought, if they were going to put the belt on Ember, why wouldn't they have done it when they'd built her up instead of just randomly putting it in a fourway after Asuka's left?

This WarGames match was insane. Wolfe having to get stitched up mid match because he was gushing blood, "Please Don't Die" chants and Dain along with AOP killing everything in sight. Jesus.

I was surprised by Almas winning, but pleasantly so. He's been on a hot streak since he took on Vega as his manager. She's fantastic and that nasty spike scissors she hit on Drew was a beauty, too. I don't know if they do the rebound feud or move Drew on to fighting Adam Cole and Undisputed.

The main event was absolutely hellacious after kind of a slow start. Some of the camera work probably needs work, as it was hard to follow at points, but, well, it's Wargames, that's kind of how it goes. One of the more brutal things WWE has done in a while and certainly a vast improvement over the last few versions WCW produced back in the 90s.
