Transformers 4: Age of Extinction trailer

Coming June 27th, starring Mark Wahlberg. Now with 100% less Shia LeBouf (which might be the only positive news about this movie.)

Another one? Why do people keep watching them? It's the same thing every time: movie is preceded by early bad reviews, yet people turn out in large numbers to see it. People leave the theater annoyed by what they saw, but it's meaningless since they've already caused it to break the box office numbers set by the previous one. Movie is released on DVD later, people cause it to sell out, and when it's all said and done by week two every retail store has a hundred or so copies they can't sell and are stuck with forever.

...I'm going to buy it on Blu-Ray.

Also, if they don't have the Wahlberg cover of Touch in this movie, they wasted an opportunity. Just so long as Hot Rod also isn't in it.

I enjoyed the first one, hated the 2nd one, and didn't watch the 3rd one. I'll probably watch this one when it comes out on blu-ray for one reason.

I'm sorry I couldn't resist posting the only prior Transformers/Wahlberg connection above. Here's the actual trailer. Hold on to your butts.

This praise is all sorts of damning, but this looks like the most promising entry in the series yet. I will say that with the addition of Kelsey Grammer, it'll easily become my second favorite Frasier-related film. After Down Periscope, because fuck X-Men 3.

With that being said, I'm sure it will inevitably end up being another crushing disappointment. I don't know if I'm the only one on this board, but much like pro wrestling, Transformers is something I never really grew out of. I suppose it's not that surprising, the parallels between the two are there.

On one hand, I'm honestly glad that Shia LeBouf is nowhere to be seen. It was hard enough dealing with him as the spastic lead before he revealed himself to be a bigger douchebag than any of us ever could have imagined. I have faith in Mark Wahlberg to be at the very least tolerable. It's taken me a while to warm up to the guy but movies like I Heart Huckabees, The Departed, The Other Guys, Boogie Nights, and Three Kings (among others) have proven him to be surprisingly versatile, in a weird one-note "say hi to your mother for me" kind of way. Although that's not to say that he's immune to making shit; The Happening, Max Payne, and Planet of the Apes being (pardon the pun) "prime" examples. I may be in the minority here, but I actually like Pain & Gain, and hope that this second teaming of Bay & Wahlberg produces similarly surprising results.

I remain gun shy, however, since this franchise of films has left me wanting at just about every turn. nOObs right, these movies do follow a pretty strict set of guidelines. That doesn't stop me from getting my hopes up just a little bit each time a new one comes out that this one might turn things around-- only to be disappointed each time (I can't remember if I'm talking about Transformers or WWE now.)

The first one had it's moments, and I won't deny that it was cool seeing the Autobots and Decepticons on screen. What I couldn't get over, however, was how indistinguishable all of the Bots and Cons were. If it wasn't red and blue like Optimus, or yellow like Bumblebee, I had no idea what character I was looking at. Don't get me started on how hard it was to understand any of the ones that weren't Optimus, their voices were so overly processed and garbled.

The less said about the second one, Revenge of the Fallen, the better. Watching Optimus die in the animated film as a child was less traumatizing than sitting through that shit. Mudflap and Skids were the worst.

Dark of the Moon was palatable. That's...that's all I've got.

It's nice to see a little fan service being thrown our way with Optimus being (however briefly) disguised as an old Freightliner cab-over-engine. I'm also sure there's enough people out there in 'Murrica who are just psyched that there's a dude with a face that turns into a fucking gun.

Now to await my inevitable disappointment.

In the event of a zombie apocalypse, I'm heading straight to Walmart and making an impenetrable fortress out of unsold Revenge of the Fallen DVDs and Dark of the Moon Blu-rays.

Awww, come on. Rodimus never got a fair shake. I suggest you, and anybody out there who feels the same way (or is just looking for some TF fiction that's actually good) to check out IDW's Transformers: More than Meets the Eye by James Roberts. An excellent take on Transformers that manages to incorporate humor, action, and drama in a way that Michael Bay never will.

edited to add: Oh, and FUCKING GRIMLOCK!

Come on guys. they're just gonna ruin the Dinobots. Why does Grimlock have horns (or...ears?)? why does Swoop have 2 heads? And how much you wanna bet that bot ends up being called Slagg or something. There's, what, a 17% chance Grimlock even says the words "Me Grimlock...".

I still really like the first one, so I won't shit talk that. The other 2 are a travesty.

And you bitches be buggin'. Hot Rod is like my favorite Transformer.

Unless this movie has Wreck Gar voiced by Weird Al, I will wait for it to show up on netflix.

I think it's because he did the song for his scene in the last movie he was in:

But I'm pretty sure he was voiced by Eric Idle in that one, and isn't he still alive? I could swear there's only one dead Monty Python guy and he wasn't him. Or at least get Cleese to fill in. But Weird Al works, too.

I know it was because of the song, but he obviously was confused and thought Weird Al voiced him in the movie and I wanted him to say it and look stupid because I'm an asshole.

Eric Idle does voice him in the movie. Some other guy does on the show.

As a wink/nod to the original movie, Weird Al actually does voice Wreck-Gar in the 2007-9 Transformers Animated series.

Transformers Animated started out pretty goofy but man did it turn into a pretty good show. They got a lot of great people to do voices. Hell, they even brought Judd Nelson back to play Rodimus.

Hot Rod/Rodimus is probably my favorite, but I still love this video...

Thai got it right, I was actually referring to the one from the 07-09 animated show, which I thought was better than the original series in terms of animation quality, and Weird Al did a great job with what was a fun character. Have him hamming it up would be much better comedy than the craptacular mess that where Mudflap and Skids.

I'm dying right now. This is definitely worth the time to watch, which is more than I can say for the actual film. It miiight even make you a John Cena fan. Okay, probably not.

I won't come right out and call this one horrible, but they got a lot more wrong than they did right with this one.

The Dinobots were probably their biggest crime... I mean its one thing to completely change them around for absolutely no reason, but to not even find a way to put what would be sure to be a crowd popping Grimlock-ism here or there was just baffling.

I think what was probably the oddest bit of dialogue in the movie was the whole Romeo and Juliette statutory rape laws explanation... Its like they wanted you to think it was okay that they were basically camera fucking someone they've clearly said is under 18 the whole movie by throwing in a whole bit about how this older guy has been banging Mark Walberg's daughter, but how its okay.... instead of just tweaking the script and saying that the daughter character was 18 (which the actress was legit about that age anyway)... I just remember it being a really bizarre and forced explanation.

I will say this whole back story about those who created the Transformers that they hint at, and these hunter characters do at least hold some possibility for being something cool- but we'll see whether they can pay it off or not, as thus far they have not shown that they can.

Good point. But asking for any sort of story logic in a Michael Bay movie is expecting a lot. Why do the sensible thing and rewrite the daughter to be of legal age when it's far more important for Bay to metaphorically wag his dick into the camera lens?

It'll be interesting to see where they go moving forward with the 5th installment in the franchise now that the news has broke that Michael Bay WON'T be directing it. My inner child isn't jumping for joy just yet, but it's a step in the right direction. Do they continue the "story" set up with the first four films, or do that do a hard/soft reboot?

I'm sure Bay will still have one of his tentacles creeping up the franchise's tartan miniskirt, in one form or another. Most likely as a producer, and we all know how that works out (see: Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja) right?

I think the only thing I can honestly hope for, as seen in the clip I posted the other day, is for the triumphant return of Oreo-Bot, and that every explosion will in fact be treated like a John Cena entrance.

I don't blame Bay for being Bay- 14 year old me would probably like the movies just fine- It's everyone else involved that didn't speak up, or who decided that trading Bay for something genuinely true to the material, or good was the way to go.

I guess we'll have to wait and see to what extent, if any, Bay's involvement is with any future films; Just guessing but I can't see him walking away on the likely tens of millions even producing would net him, nor Hasbro looking at the man's track record and saying hit the road.

I tend to look at Bay as being a lot like Tim Burton- potentially great, really visual directors with a sense of style (not for everyone obviously) but who would work better when working under someone else, or off of a strong script locked in before they get their mitts into it too much. It's weird but with DreamWorks being involved with all of the Transformer movies you would think that the voice of reason behind it all would be Spielberg.

First off, that improvements video was fucking great.

I dunno even know what to say about this pile of turds that hasn't been said. It took me three attempts to power thru it... I'd handle German gay fetish porn easier than this shit.

My main gripe with all these films is why is there so much dialogue? Like why are almost all the human characters constantly bickering, or just over-talking? Pretty much everyone except for the protagonist is insufferable.

Nothing really epitomizes this more than the boyfriend character. They're all being chased by basically soldiers of fortune, and there also is the issue of 30 foot tall robots with LASER CANNONS trying to merc them, and his main thing is being all, "Fucked yer little girl, dickface! LOLOLOL!"

Jesus. I don't think I've ever hated a "good" guy more than him. I was hoping that at any moment he would die. Hopefully a brutal and non-sequitur death... Like a random drunk guy in a Honda Civic blindsides him and he loses a leg and has his spine shattered. Or he has some weird disease that causes him to have a heart attack and fucking die. Does Bay want people to hate 90% of the characters?

Hell, even the robots are terrible. When we first see the autobots in the desert, they start shooting their weapons off when they realize Optimus is arriving. Fucking idiots. Then they try to kill each other. Because they're the good guys, and why wouldn't all the good guys try to murder each other for no fucking reason.

Grade A feces.
