Obsidian is the company that made Fallout New Vegas, so this could be a massive Action/RPG on scale with that, set in the South Park universe. Pretty awesome.

I'm kind of over South Park, but this is really cool in concept and having a quality studio like Obsidian behind it is a really good sign.

Obsidian also made Alpha Protocol, which, from what I've read and seen, was such a huge letdown both quality and sales wise that any plans to make sequels died shortly after its release. I liked New Vegas and KOTOR 2, but not nearly as much as the games whose foundations they built upon (Fallout 3 and KOTOR 1). In fact, the more I think about both, my favorite parts were the parts already established by the previous game, while my least favorite parts involved something they added in (in New Vegas, for example, I felt like the group reputation bit was just a little tacked on and, later in the game, was just slightly annoying, as I'd suddenly become hostile with things not related to a specific group for being associated with said group).

Basically, anything made by Obsidian is a "Wait for the Reviews" type of game for me.

I actually really liked Alpha Protocol. I thought a lot of the criticisms were overblown-- a typical nitwit reaction nowadays; if there's a few flaws in something, all of a sudden it's "THE WORST THING EVER!" It wasn't the greatest game by any means, but I rented it last year and didn't regret it one bit... I thought it was a lot of fun.

I'm in the minority, but I'm not really feeling this (and I say this as both a huge game fan and someone who's generally enjoyed South Park over the years). South Park just strikes me as a little too silly to be the basis for a RPG and I can't picture myself wanting to put in 30 to 40 hours with a South Park game.

I do think South Park can work as a game (even if most previous attempts have sucked), but I'm just not feeling it as a RPG. I think a side-scroller kind of like the old Simpsons arcade game would be a better way to go.

I hated KOTOR 2, Fallout Vegas was ok. Be weird to see them make a game thats not a sequel or half the stuff done for them already

That game was so awesome.

Also, KOTOR 2 was great and gets way to much criticism

KOTOR 2 was...there. That one was the one that best fits my opinion of Obsidian taking over production on games: they're the kind of group that would play Arkham City and say "yeah that was good, but it would be better if Batman had rocket launchers and machine guns.". Their "rockets and machine guns" were the companions becoming Jedi and the point based companion relation system. They weren't that well implemented and seemed just a bit out of place.

I'm Warming Up to This Game...

This is apparently in-game footage:

Wow...that's almost identical to South Park the show.

This came out today. Picked it up and, gotta say, it is quite the spectacle. It's been beaten to death, but it does legitimately feel like you are playing an episode of South Park. Haven't really gotten too far into it, but the reviews are echoing how I feel this game will be: amazing.

Apparently, it's 8-12 hours of actual gameplay for the overall story, with about 4-6 hours of straight cut scenes.

I have heard the reason that people think the show has been so-so recently is because all of Matt and Trey's good shit has gone into the game's story.

I hear it's great, and I plan to play the ever-loving shit out of it.

I'm a South Park fan for life.

I'm thinking about getting this tomorrow... is it worth the full $60, or should I just wait a month or two for a price drop?

Well, take this into account: I'm nearing the end of the game. I've been playing for extended periods of time between Tuesday and Thursday, and, while I've completed a good amount of the side quests, I still have a few unexplored areas, am still missing five Chinpokomon (thankfully I got Velocirapstar), and have a few extra costumes missing, too. So, with a good amount of exploration extra to the main quest, it took me somewhere around 16 hours to get to a point where I may be 75% done with the game.

But, length of time to beat the game aside, I would say that the humor is a lot of hits with almost no misses (and the one or two misses that are there are still kinda funny). The combat is oddly addictive, and the repeated dialogue doesn't really get old. And some of the boss fights are among the most insane I've ever seen in a game.

Also, an aside: I am a bit shocked they get away with a number of the things they do. I would expect that, it being a video game, they'd leave brands out of it to not worry about licensing costs and/or lawsuits, but they do not let up, and I am surprised a few of the celebrities in the game aren't a bit more uppity about their mentioning/likeness.

Sold out?

That's really good to know that South Park, despite how quiet it has been in the mainstream, has amassed a following so large over the years that, when a respectable game comes out, it's a big deal.

I hope the sales are strong. Matt and Trey should be proud of accomplishing what many companies cannot do - Making a great licensed video game.

I struck out, too... they didn't have any copies when I went to Target last night. That's cool though. If the game is pretty popular, maybe there will eventually be a sequel.

Well, once upon a time Trey and Matt said their script was too big for the game, but they told THQ to "fuck off" when it came to DLC. Apparently, their tune has changed with Ubisoft, because, according to IGN, there's three planned DLC Packs, all early on X-Box. So there's replayability on this in the future.

Picked it up this morning. I'm not far into it at all... just finished up my first few non-tutorial battles. It's pretty great so far though. Just doing some exploring around houses and stuff, this game is already stuffed full of inside jokes from the game.

I love this game. Got it late yesterday and cracked it today - I play slowly and methodically so in no hurry to "win". I am cracking up constantly. My wife and son are in the other room and they keep coming in because cracking up at the audio and want to see what is going on. Very glad I made this an early purchase.
