TNA Live Impact tapings not selling well...

http://nodq.com/tna/315080982.shtml

quote:
The TNA Impact Wrestling tapings outside of Orlando on August 25th in Huntsville, Alabama has reportedly sold less than 400 tickets. One of the big frustrations within TNA these days is that now they have the chance to take Impact on the road, they canít sell any tickets.

I checked ticketmaster and can get 4 seats together in the third/fourth row of any next to the ring block... I can't imagine that $70 seats to impact are ever going to sell well though. Have they picked bad markets, or have they priced themselves out of the game? I can't imagine floor seats to RAW going for more than $70 (this does include ticketbastard fees), so charging this much for like it or not, what is viewed as a second tier product...

I think if floor seats were $25, mid tier $15 and cheap seats $10 then they'd sell much better.

Is anyone else suprised they're struggling?

It's been a few years since I checked, but when I went to RAW, floor seats WERE about $100.

Still, $70 is a lot of money. I've never heard a bad word about any TNA house show, but it's going to be hard for them to pick up any steam at that price.

Floor seats for the October 3rd Raw in LA are exactly the same price...

It's like they've just said "WWE charges this much for Raw, so that's what we'll charge. No matter that they've been doing this in front of thousands of people for years and we can't get 1,000 fans in a free arena, if we go out of Florida and charge $20 we'll look bush-league, even if we sell it out."

And that's the story of how 600 people got into the Impact tapings for free.

Front row ROH tix go for $25 for a Mich better show. Obviously, the arenas are very different and TNA probably can't make their money back with such cheap tix, but Indies like ROH and DGUSA seem like a much better value UNLESS you really need to see Velvet Sky, who may be worth the price of admission.

25 dollars gets you ringside at TNA houseshows as well. I think TNA has to charge more for the cost of all the camera equipment/lighting/crew for the live show. In the end, they really should be charging less, as the television show is no where near as good as the house shows they put on.

IMO, they shouldn't be looking to turn a profit, this is an experiment to see if they can take impact out of Orlando. They can charge $70 and make a fortune next year. Surely they've realised that they can't sell out 3-4,000 seats fir their speciality ppv's, they'll never sell out a tv taping at that price.

ROH tickets in new york for front row are $100, so take that for what it is.

I've bought front row tickets to ROH tv tapings and it was like 50 bucks. I think part of the reason that the tickets are moving slow is because the taping is in Huntsville, Alabama. They couldn't even pick a real city.

Ahem. It's not a real city, but has one of the highest average education levels in the country. Oh, and it was on the Soviet first strike list back when we had nukes pointed at us.

But it's not a real city. We leave those for Ohio...

Apparently ticket prices have skyrocketed over the past decade. The last time I attended live TV tapings was back in the late 90s, but I'm pretty certain I never spent anywhere near $70 for floor seats.

It costs a lot more money than people think to produce a live or live-to-tape wrestling show.

4 or 5 camera ops, switcher, director, pa, producers, aps, runners, probably 15-20 tv personnel in total... on minimum 8 hour days... plus the cost of renting or shipping your own production equipment... a satelite truck or mobile production truck... add in costs for post-production (editing), transmissions, etc...

the average NHL/NFL/MLB/NBA game costs between $75,000 on the low end to $250,000 on the mid to high range... my guess, ROH or TNA costs are in the $30,000-$60,000 per day... while WWE is likely in the $75,000-150,000 for RAW (just a guess though -- and keep in mind WWE has already invested millions on transportation and production infrastructure... so their costs are mainly staffing, etc).

so charging $100 for 100-200 ringside seats = $10,000-20,000 potentially... these are the important seats... the "break-even" if we're lucky seats...

charging $25 to a tv taping sounds romantic, but in reality, these companies can't afford it, regardless of the need to prove an ability survive outside of Orlando (as in TNA's case)...

the bottom line... if they can consistantly sell the ringsides at $100, that would more than prove an ability to move Impact on the road fulltime.

...and this would be TNA admitting failure and conceding a major loss of money on the event.

Just out of curiosity, how has the show been marketed in the area? And I don't know much about the Huntsville area - is this somewhere that should reasonably be able to support a show like this, or is everyone saving up their money for college football?

Or...they cut a deal with the local Toys R' Us and will get a check from them.

Either one.

One thing I forgot to mention- the tv production costs are rarely passed on to the event goers. The cost is covered by the money generated by the broadcast itself. The reason TNA house shows are less expensive is likely because they are generally promoted locally and produced by a 3rd party, unless something had changed...

Someone is getting third row seats for $7. I doubt the 1 Toys R Us is providing the $63. That would be stupid.

Free ticket does not necessarily mean floor seats. My guess is that they are still trying to sell those, but have blocked some nosebleed seats to give away.

...And, if they don't sell the floor tix, TNA will end up shuffling everyone down (up?) a level. So, same thing, pretty much.

TNA could be in more trouble with UFC leaving Spike for Fox and FX - it might lead to Spike rebranding, and getting away from the male 18-34 targeted demo.

I think enough of their shows are still targeted at that demographic, so if anything, this just means Impact is now that much more important to Spike. UFC got higher ratings, but with that gone, Impact is the network's star program.
