Casino World is really a low point for the game, but truck on. Fifth World is good stuff and the endgame is nice.

It definitely felt like a banjo game, but like you said, rough around the edges.

I just started playing Metroid: Samus Returns, the 3DS remake of the old Game Boy title Metroid II: Return of Samus.

I'm probably 1/4 of the way through it right now. I like that they redid Metroid II with today's styles. I always wanted to play through the fan made AM2R game that was basically Metroid II using Super Metroid's graphics, but I never got it to work right on my computer. I'm glad that Nintendo completely redid the maps - with the bigger screens to work with, the environments definitely benefit. The melee attack definitely means it's harder to just run and shoot your way through a level.

I like it so far. We'll see what I think when I finish it.

Yeah, I so badly wanted Yooka-Laylee to be great but it's just not. They definitely did a solid job of nailing the music and atmosphere of the old Banjo games, but the gameplay just leaves something to be desired. Still, not a bad game though and I've been having a good time with it over the last month or so.

As a Nintendo fanboy, I feel a little guilty that I never picked up Samus Returns on the 3DS, since it's normally the type of thing I would be all over. I hardly ever play my 3DS these days, but probably should rectify that problem at some point.

And since we're on the subject, I downloaded the original Metroid II on the 3DS a few years ago (since I never played it originally back in the day) and man, I had a hard time getting into it. Between the old school black and white graphics and the lack of a map, I eventually ended up getting lost and just didn't have the desire to try and play through the whole game.

I went through Metroid II two or three times - back when it came out on GB and then when I had the Super Gameboy adapter for the SNES. I donít think I could play now, though. The play field is so small, and while it was a technical marvel on a GB, it feels really dated and slow compared to any 2D Metroid that came out after.

Yeah, the original Metroid II is definitely a product of it's time. The graphics still look pretty nice (especially for an old Gameboy game) but playing a black and white game on a small screen, with no map to help guide you along it's large overworld, sadly just doesn't work today. Now, if I had played this game as a kid in the early 90's with a copy of Nintendo Power to help get me through, I probably would have felt differently.

And speaking of old school Nintendo handheld games, I started a game in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap for the first time ever about a week ago. I've had it downloaded for years on my 3DS, but for some reason just never got around to playing it. I've only beaten the first dungeon so far, but am really enjoying it and the shrinking mechanic is really well done.

Nice! I played Minish Cap on an emulator about 3 or 4 years ago and really enjoyed it. I thought they did a great job with the shrinking mechanic as well.

Yeah, the shrinking stuff is definitely cool and The Minish Cap almost reminds me of Link's Awakening in a way, in that it feels a smidge different than most other Zelda games (I know it was developed by Capcom, so that probably has something to do with it). Stuff like Link's hat being a living creature, being able to shrink, the Picori people, etc, are things that I don't think have ever resurfaced in a Zelda game.

So I think I'm finally going to have to tap out on Yooka-Laylee. I was already getting a little bored with it and just discovered last night that you need to collect 100 pages to reach the end portion of the game and I'm currently only sitting at like 66. I usually hate to quit on a game before beating it, but I just don't think I have it in me to collect 34 more pages.

Plus I've been wanting to start a game in Hollow Knight, which I've heard great things about, so am probably going to take an extended break from Yooka-Laylee and play that instead.

I finished Samus Returns a few weeks ago. I really enjoyed it. If you loved Super Metroid, Metroid Zero Mission, or Metroid Fusion, you will enjoy this as well. The graphics are gorgeous and the 3-D effect is really well done. It gives a lot of depth for this 2-D side scroller. However, when youíre fighting bosses, itís distracting. So I played about 60% of the game with the 3D off.

From what iíve read...

-Ah, itís a shame youíll never finish Yooka, Goon. I ended up quite liking it in the end. A lot of those pagies really were fun to get once you backtrack (which i think you need to do and may not realize an extra 15-25 more have opened up on each stage.

-Samus Returns was incredible. Loved the ending, loved how different it felt, and the fucking Diggernaut or whatever that machine boss was...thatís the highlight if the game.

-Been playing a lot of Mega Man Collection and Mario maker 2. Maker 2 is just lovely. Canít stop.

-also watching my girl play through Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom battle and itís REALLY making me wish Nintendo would make one more.

Yeah, that giant machine was a fun battle, as was the Queen Metroid. Really interesting way to make you use the different powers and abilities you gain through the game.

Well, I won't say that I'll never finish it, but just kind of feel like I need a little break. I was already getting kind of burnt out on the game and once I realized that I hadn't even collected 75% of enough pagies to get to the end, it just felt like it was time to put the game down for now.

And I have done backtracking through the levels to get more, but I think one of my issues with the game is that the levels are so big that a lot of the time I tend to just wander around aimlessly hoping to come across pagies. There have been times where I've put in 20 to 30 minutes of playtime and only gotten one or two pagies, so the thought of having to collect 34 more just seems like it's gonna take me forever.

Big binge on video games over the last couple of weeks...

Wound up house sitting for a friend who has a PS4 (I have an Xbox and a Switch) so I was finally able to finish the Spider-man game I picked up months ago... The story is pretty damned good, maybe a little bit too slow in the middle and repetitive, but the last couple hours of play and story were great.

I wrapped that up early into the house sitting so I broke out my buddy's God of War 3... only a couple hours in but am digging it.

On the home front I finally finished Red Dead 2... I'd gotten as far as a few missions before jumping into the epilogues... not sure why I ever put it down. Anyway finally finished it, epilogues and all, and really enjoyed it.

In between I've been playing some Tetris 99 on the Switch... after weeks of top five finishes but never finishing first I've now done it a few times... Crazy tough game; not just keeping up yourself, but fending off being attacked by other players makes or breaks your game. I've also been digging into Super Mario Bros 3... Forgot how much I loved this game as a kid.

Last but not least just started Shadow of the Tomb Raider yesterday. It's good thus far, but thus far it feels like the second game where they set the bar really high with the first in this reboot series, and then kinda played it safe after that... Just more of the same. Shadow feels like that as well... we'll see though.

One side effect of playing so many games in a short span is that I find I instinctively start a button combination that does not go with the game I'm playing... mostly hitting up on the D-pad to try and heal myself a la Spidey game... to no effect, or in Tomb Raider trying to slow time via deadeye by pressing down on the RS.

I love Tetris 99 and it's one of the few games where I can toot my own horn and say that I'm in the upper echelon of players, as I'm currently sitting at 60 first place wins and tend to finish in at least the top ten most times that I play. Kudos to Nintendo for coming up with such a wacky concept, not to mention that it's free for online subscribers.

Yep, I played the shit out of Pilotwings last night (I never seem to get tired of that game, despite it being almost 30 years old). And I'm glad Nintendo decided to include some more random games in the SNES lineup, such as Stunt Race FX, Demon's Crest, Breath of Fire, etc.

And this has been an awesome week for the Switch, with the release of the SNES games, a great update for Tetris 99 (I was able to finish 4th in Tetris Invictus, my new crowning achievement) and the release of Banjo-Kazooie in Smash Bros.

Yeah I saw that update had come out, so I downloaded it... agreed on some of the more random/unexpected games. The inclusion of Joe & Mac, especially.

But beyond downloading it, I'm afraid the ol' Switch will be nothing but a dust-gatherer for a while. Gears 5 is out now (and despite server issues, the single player so far is awesome), Borderlands is out next week. And as if those two weren't enough to take up tons and tons of time, The Outer Worlds is out next month.

Kind of on that subject, I was talking to my brother last weekend about how I've thought about getting a PS4 (the Switch is the only current-gen system I own), but I have a hard enough time playing everything I want on the Switch as it is. There's the 20 SNES games that just got released and the new stuff in Tetris 99, plus I'm still playing Yooka-Laylee (after taking a little break) and have Hollow Knight on the backburner, and then there's stuff like Link's Awakening and Luigi's Mansion 3 coming out. There's just too much shit to play, not that that's a bad thing.

Link's Awakening was going to be a day one purchase for me (because Zelda), but man, I just have so much other shit to play at the moment. I may have to push that one back a few months, though I will definitely play it at some point (because, again, Zelda).

You really should get around to playing Hollow Knight*, its fuckin awesome.

* I say this as a dude who never finished it because I got frustrated as shit trying to beat one of the bosses. Still had a ton of fun.

Sorry I havenít been so active in here, but hey, thats life. Iím playing noticeably less games this year and have gone quite retro with my choices.

-Katana ZERO is a verrrrry good action game. Super stylish and a good story. I loved every second of it.

-Yoshiís Craft World is your typical Yoshi game, meaning itís good, but it isnít as excellent as Yoshiís Island and is a hair behind Wooly World. I recommend it, particularly for how creative the art is. It was my travel-n-play game all spring.

-Specter Knight DLC for Shovel Knight is good and has new music! Get on it if youíre a lover of all things Shovelian.

-Super Mario Maker 2 is a ridiculous romp of a Creat-A-Whatever game and this tike levels feel better. Just an outstandingly fun time. Nintendo delivered big time on this sequel.

-Mega Man is never not awesome.

-SNES streaming is great!

-Yes, I beat Hotline Miami twice. Thatís how good it is.

Cam, your list of gaming accomplishments never ceases to impress me.

And you'll probably be happy to know that I toughed it out with Yooka-Laylee and finally beat it today. That last boss fight against Capital B was kind of a bitch (well, at least the final part where he starts shooting the missiles at you) and took me about ten tries, but I was finally able to beat him. I'm probably gonna dive into Hollow Knight now, though I have been enjoying all of the SNES stuff as well.

EDIT: I beat Pilotwings for the first time ever today too (thanks heavily to the rewind feature enabled on the NES/SNES games on the Switch) and it's way deeper than I ever imagined. I had no idea there was a whole second set of challenges after completing the first portion of the game, plus I didn't know there was the bonus games like flying in a chicken suit and being a penguin jumping off of a diving board. There's even a little bit of a cinema scene to close out the game and I seriously never knew any of this stuff existed despite playing the game multiple times over the past 35 years.

Also, the two helicopter missions have to be among the most frustrating shit ever put in a video game and I don't think I would ever beat either one without using the rewind feature (which explains why I'd never beaten Pilotwings up till now).
