I fucking loved the Castlevania games on DS, but sadly my copies all went missing at some point (I moved three times in the span of a year circa 2013 and I think they just got lost in the shuffle). Would love to reacquire them at some point, though I do at least have the Gameboy Advance Castlevania games downloaded on my Wii U.

Back on topic, I beat Slain: Back From Hell last night on the Switch. It's a retro-style side scroller kind of in the vein (coincidentally) of the Castlevania series, with a bit of a tongue in cheek heavy metal/medieval fantasy slant. I picked it up on sale for $5 a few weeks ago and it was definitely worth it for that price. It can be pretty damn difficult in parts, as there were times where I thought "fuck, this is impossible," but I kept plugging away at it and it was never so bad that I felt like completely giving up (though I did come close a time or two). Overall, I'd probably rank it a 7/10, as the difficulty made it less than fun at times, but overall it's a well done game. Plus, the soundtrack is pretty kick ass.

I just finished off, after about six months, my first playthrough of the original Kingdom Hearts since 2004. I didn't know Kingdom Hearts 3 was coming out this winter at the time I started, and I don't intend to buy it as Kingdom Hearts 2 got really tiresome after a while, but still, it's a fun coincidence.

Playing the original again after 14 years was a lesson in muscle memory. I beat Sephiroth on the first try, without once getting hit by Descend Heartless Angel, when it took me months and months to fumble my way to victory in 2002/2003. On the other hand, one or two of the Hundred Acre Wood mini-games were as teeth-grindingly hard as ever, and I've still never had the patience to run the Hades Cup in time trial mode.

I've just started Sword of Vermilion for the Sega Genesis (well, for the Sega Genesis Collection on PS2; I still have the original cartridge, but the Collection has save states, which are hugely helpful as I might get pulled away from the console at any moment). Did anybody here ever play this one? I believe it started out as an attempt on Sega's part to show that Phantasy Star wasn't its only means of competing with SNES RPGs, but obviously that didn't happen. It was the first RPG I ever enjoyed, though, and it's been holding up pretty well so far, not least because I still remember basically every secret some 20 years after I last played it.

I had Sword of Vermillion. I remember enjoying it, but I don't remember much about it, to be honest. Is this the one with the side-scrolling giant monsters?

That's the one. The gigantic, well-rendered boss enemies were apparently a huge part of the marketing, but they end up being like 1% of the game.

Thus far, what's impressed me more than anything else is the quality of the dialogue. I just did a run through Phantasy Star IV a year or so back, and as much as that game is considered more or less the gold standard of Genesis RPGs, a lot of the dialogue is translated really awkwardly. Sword of Vermilion, on the other hand, has immaculate translation, with only one or two moments thus far coming across as a little confusing. I'd have never noticed that as a kid, back in the days of Konami trying to claim the abysmal translation in Castlevania II was deliberate, but it stands out to me as an adult.

I picked up Super Smash Bros Ultimate last week and if any game is going to break my Rocket League and Street Fighter Anniversary Collection online addiction, this has been it. I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan of the Smash Bros franchise (though I have owned every game in the series, minus the 3DS one), but I've been enjoying the hell out of Ultimate and playing it a ton. Between the characters, stages, music, different game modes, etc, it's just insane how much content Nintendo has managed to cram into this one. What was once a celebration of all things Nintendo has now turned into a celebration of all things video games, since there are so many third party characters in the game now (hell, Dracula serves as the final boss of the game if you play through classic mode as Simon or Richter Belmont). When you have something as obscure as the Fatal Frame series appearing as an assist trophy in Smash Bros, you know that Nintendo isn't fucking around.

Now if only they could work out some kind of deal with Microsoft to get Banjo-Kazooie in the game...

12-25-218 9:56 AM SUPER SMASH BROS. ultimate World of Light beaten - Game of the year? Perhaps.

Nah, God of War is my Game of the Year, yet, if I were to make a top 10 list today, Smash Ultimate would easily be swapped in Wii U/3DS version’s place.

So, I’ll just throw it up and give the 2018 GOTY award to BOTH God of War for the Playstation 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch.

They both get my “Buy these right now if you do not own them.” Award. It isn’t fancy.

No, I should show up as Chris on your friend list. Though I will say that I'm not quite as into online play with Smash as I am with some other games on the Switch (like Street Fighter, Mario Kart, etc), just because I've never been the greatest at it. But hey, if our schedules ever line up, I would definitely be down to give it a go.

And since you mentioned your game(s) of the year picks, it got me thinking that I really have no idea what my game of the year for 2018 would be. Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey were easy 1 and 1A picks for me in 2017, but I just didn't really play a ton of new releases this year (and not owning a PS4 or Xbox One means I miss out on a lot of stuff). I guess I would have to go with Super Smash Bros Ultimate just by default, since I've put in a ton of time with that game even though it came out in the last month of 2018.

Also, since there's really nowhere else appropriate to post about this here, I sold my amiibo collection of 46 loose (aka not in box) figures for $475 on eBay yesterday. It made me a little sad to box them up and ship them off this afternoon, since I'd spent a couple of years accumulating them, but I had gotten to the point where I was just kind of tired of them taking up room and I hardly even use them on any games anymore (even in the new Smash Bros, I feel like their use is kind of limited). I've also been selling some of my in-box amiibo figures as well, so in the last couple of months I've made over $600 selling amiibos, which is kind of mind-boggling to me.

It makes me happy to know that I will be able to sell my collection of 100+ amiibos one day for some decent money.

I just picked up the Ridley, Inkling, and Wolf ones. I don’t even know why. It’s become conpulsory at this point to own them.

Yeah, I saw the Ridley amiibo at Target a couple of weeks ago and had to restrain myself from buying it (also, it looks like they jacked the price up on the current batch of amiibos for some reason, from $12.99 to $15.99).

And Cam, is your collection still in the box or no? I've made some good money selling in-box amiibos on eBay (I made $41 on the gold Mario amiibo and $43 on the Toon Link/Zelda two-pack, for instance), so if you have over 100 figures still in their boxes, you're in for a really good payday.

Last night, I won my first game of Fortnite, playing solo.

It made me strangely happier than a 40ish year old man should be from a video game.

My collection is entirely out of the box.

Also, I havenmt been playing anything besides Smash. It’s easily my comfy game right now, as I am becoming very lonely with my wife being in Russia to hve our child in March.

So I downloaded Tetris 99 on the Switch two nights ago and it's pretty awesome (for those unaware, it was a surprise release by Nintendo on Wednesday and is free for anyone who has a Nintendo online subscription). The basic gist is that you play against 98 other people, hence the "Tetris 99" title, until only one remains. Simple concept, but it's really addictive and the first time that Tetris has been done on a big multiplayer scale like this.

And I gotta say, as a Tetris veteran who's been playing since the Gameboy days, I've been kicking ass in the game so far. In the five matches I've played, I've finished 10th twice, 4th, 2nd, and 1st. Hell, beating 98 other people in Tetris just might be my biggest online accomplishment in video gaming ever.

On a non-Tetris note, I've still been playing Super Smash Bros Ultimate a good bit. I kind of slowed down with the game once I'd unlocked all of the characters, but the World of Light mode is still keeping me engaged and is actually way longer than I originally thought it would be. And as I've mentioned before, the amount of content and fan service Nintendo has managed to pack into this game is insane and it makes me wonder where the hell they go with the next installment in the franchise, even though that's probably still a good five years off.
