WWE Comics

I don't think this has been mentioned anywhere yet. I tried to search all the topics, but this just has failure written all over it.

"Titan Publishing announced today that they will partner with World Wrestling Entertainment to launch a series of WWE-branded comics. (The flagship title: WWE Heroes.) The first issue — which reveals a rivalry within WWE — will be published on March 23, 2010. Titan plans on releasing 20 issues, which will focus on WWE stars like John Cena, Rowdy Roddy Piper, and Chris Jericho. “The ‘in-your-face, no-holds-barred’ attitude of the WWE works so well as a comic, we just can’t wait for people to see the great surprises we’ve got in store,” WWE Heroes editor Ned Hartley said in a press release."

The editor's enthusiasm cracks me up.

Here's a summary from the official website:

"Why is the ruthless Shadow King so obsessed with the WWE? What is the reason for his eternal and supernatural war with the Firstborn? And could his ancient opponent really be a member of the WWE roster?"

Anyone else get The Warrior comic books from the late 90s? Those were horrible.

Eric Bischoff just twittered that the Shadow King is Vince Mcmahon.

Surely the ancient opponent would never in a million years possibly be John Cena.

Wow, I'm surprised the E is trying their hand at comic books again. I remember a long time ago in WWF magazine they previewed this really awful comic series they were creating. I remember they introduced Vince as this wonderful, loving, caring, visionary. Undertaker had these visions and his face became all distorted and "wiggily" and he saw "them" coming. I think it led to the WWF roster wrestling some race of aliens that looked like neon colored Human Torches.

Well, so long as they don't spend millions of dollars promoting it, it could get them a bit of extra cash and in-roads into the youth market.

It's no different then coloring books and the like. And i've certainly seen those over the years.

2 things: 1)as an artist that art work sucks for a comic book done in 2009. 2) The language on that book aint so G-rated.

My GOD that's terrible. The art is worse than Rob Liefeld's. And the art isn't even the worst thing about it.

Wow. I can't even recognize some of those people. I also can't even understand what is supposed to be going on, so at least it's consistent with the current product in that regard.

On a positive note, Tommy Dreamer appears to be in excellent shape in that battle royal.

I remember that. It had scenes set in the WWF office gym, if I recall correctly. And it was something to do with aliens or ancient gods. Did it ever get released or conclude or anything?

This new one seems to be along the same lines, and also not that different from the nonsense in the Undertaker Chaos! Comics. The Rock, Mankind, Austin and Chyna comics were all the same story - wrestler drifts into town, defeats bad guys who own the town.

To me, nothing is ever going to top the Undertaker Bossman comic book fight from the early 90s, in which Bossman allows the pizza boy to play with an UZi and a machete sized knife, before he goes up against Taker.

It ends, of course, with Paul Bearer implying that he and Taker are cannibals.

Now THAT should play out on TV.

So I'm not the only one who immediately thought about Highlander. I'm guessing one of the two black guys is Kofi. Can't think of who the other one is off the top of my head. Pretty sad. What's not sad? How ridiculously ripped Matt Hardy is.

Does it boggle anyone else's mind that Hurricane is nowhere to be seen? The guy who's entire gimmick for the last seven years is being a superhero can't get a starring role in a comic book. Really? Kids love masks. Hurricane and Rey should have been the first one's on the cover. Hell, Rey should have a limited edition "Clone Saga" esque min-series where he returns to Mexico and there's like eight guys claiming to be the "real king of mystery" or something. You don't have to add anything too otherworldly to make these things work.

Off the top of my head, we have the Rey scenario I proposed, anything they do with Hurricane (minus any powers - make him Batman/DareDevil/Punisher with a chair, etc.) should sell. Have C.M. Punk get suspended from WWE and use his downtime cleaning up the streets of Chicago as the Second City Saint - a tie in with his thing with Luke Gallows or whatever Festus's name is.

Instead of a mythical Shadow King, have it be some pyscho who's watched Taker not job one too many times and goes on a rampage until he can meet with him.

I don't know, just something that's not this.

Quentil, I don't see how you can compare the money it would take to produce even the cheapest comic book to the production costs of a coloring book and no offense, I wouldn't trust the guy that thought like that with the budget for this.

I can't wait for the Randy Orton spinoff where he has several Deadpool-like dialogue boxes to represent the VOICES. Also, I can't believe this is being written by someone who's name I actually know.

This got me to thinking about how awesome it would be if someone made a WWE version of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. And sadly it would make better use of the WWE license than most of the regular Smackdown games.

Didn't they try that sort of thing on the Gameboy once? I forget the name but I think you could play as Rock, Austin or Undertaker and you had to rescue Stephanie McMahon from some terrorists.

Ah yes.. G-rated WWE comics.

So it's not like we're going to have to worry about Ultimate Warrior raping Santa Claus or anything like that?

Finally, a chance for them to LITERALLY make Cena "Superman."

EDIT: Okay I just saw the scans and I have to say I'm scared of this comic. I mean it doesn't surprise me, being a comic AND about wrestlers, that everyone's super-muscled, but these drawings are TOO super-muscled. NOBODY looks like they do in real life, it's ridiculous.

The 'He-Man'-like adventures they're all having both disturb and make sense to me. It's disturbing because the smark in me says "They would never do crap like this in real life, seeing as it's based on REAL LIFE people." Yet, the mark in me says "What else could they possibly have for a plotline for this comic? They wrestle all the time? Boring."

But overall I'm just weirded out by it. Would like to see how it plays out to the media/fans though.
