As always, questions/comments/concerns/discussion can all go here.

DKBroiler - 6-26-2018 at 12:23 AM

Great work man!

One concern ... I almost think real songs like Voodoo Chile and Freebird, not to mention Flight of the Valkries, is probably cheating.

Also where is Flair and Punk?

This was brought up in the discussion thread, but I didn't think the suggestion was concrete enough to really enforce. "Cult of Personality" (and Flair's theme) is a big one that had me lean towards allowing real songs. It became a big part of Punk and kind of defines an era; I felt like it shouldn't be left out. And when you allow one or two to slip through, the argument for disqualifying others becomes more subjective.

A good bit of qualifying polls are still to come. Punk is in one of them. Flair only has one theme in, so he'll show up in the actual first round.

Couple of questions:

1) is each one of Mick Foley's personalities getting a spot?

2) we are just voting on the song correct? Not the video, because some of those videos have not aged well.

Yes and yes.

Thanks

the goon - 6-28-2018 at 01:06 AM

Wow, wasn't expecting this to be starting up quite so soon...excellent work as always Matte!

bopol - 6-30-2018 at 08:21 PM

FYI, I did a little research and the BDK theme was Rammstein's Engel, with a lot less words.

This karoake version is the closest I've found to the theme used.

CM Crunk - 7-2-2018 at 10:34 AM

Still pushing for "Real American" to be listed as US Express or Patterson/Briscoe from here on out.

Matte - 7-6-2018 at 06:51 PM

All unpinned polls are being considered decided and inactive. The currently pinned polls still need your votes! A few draws need broken, and a few close ones need definitive winners. Help a brother out! Looking to roll out the official first round in a couple days.

Also, a funny note: I ended up having great timing in collecting all the information for this showdown, because just days after finishing up, Wikipedia began wiping out the "In Wrestling" section of wrestler pages. This includes finishing moves, signature moves, nicknames, managers, and of course, entrance themes. ProWrestlingWiki has some of this information, but nowhere near as much as Wiki had before they decided to get rid of it. It's a good thing I sped things up a bit getting this up and running or I'd be a little more in the dark trying to find these themes.

Matte - 7-8-2018 at 07:59 PM

Round 1 is officially underway!

You'll notice a few "SHOW OPEN" polls in every grouping. They're part of the mini "Ultimate Show Opening Theme Showdown" running alongside this one. EDIT: There are more of these to come. This grouping doesn't have the full list of Raw/SD/Impact themes.

Listen! Vote! Have fun!

LoveMuscle - 7-15-2018 at 11:31 PM

Probably no surprise to anyone, but so far most of the "WWF/E theme vs. Non-WWF/E theme" matchups are going to the WWF/E option.

salmonjunkie - 7-16-2018 at 02:17 AM

I would say that Jim Johnston and CFO$ are better at their craft than Dale Oliver and Jimmy Hart are (and that's no disrespect to Dale or Jimmy).

salmonjunkie - 7-26-2018 at 08:07 AM

Did the Unholy Alliance theme make the tournament?

It didn't, but I added it to one of the two remaining polls since it's still the first round. That'll be the last addition.

A few new polls are up to finish off the first round, and polls that were close (1 vote difference) or tied have been re-pinned for a chance to get decisive victors. Every vote counts! Second round to start early next week!

denverpunk - 8-18-2018 at 03:58 PM

Doh! Did Roddy Piper’s theme ever get in here?

salmonjunkie - 8-18-2018 at 05:25 PM

I don't remember Roddy's theme making it in the tourney.

What about Ric Flair's? Also Sprach Zarathustra? I think I remember it being in the tourney, but it didn't advance? Who'd it lose to?

Matte - 8-18-2018 at 05:35 PM

Piper's wasn't nominated and I somehow missed it when brainstorming for fillers, unfortunately. Flair's is still in and will show up in the second half of round three, next week.

salmonjunkie - 8-18-2018 at 05:43 PM

Oh, I see - it destroyed Psicosis' theme. I totally forgot that. Ha!

Hmm... Can Piper's theme make a late entry? It'd be pretty befitting for a dastardly heel to come in late to a tournament.

- or we could do a late Round 1/2 where it takes on other songs that we forgot about - I want to say maybe Finlay's theme didn't make it either? Macho Man's half-way decent metal theme from when he was in NWO? Rugged Ronnie Garvin probably had a shitty theme, too? Cactus Jack's WCW theme, Mr. Bang Bang? Maxx Payne/Man Mountain Rock? I think none of Matt Bloom's character's themes made it, either? Albert/A-Train/Tensai?

LoveMuscle - 8-23-2018 at 10:53 PM

Wow, there's a lot of one-sided matches in this part of the bracket for this to be the third round.

whyme - 8-26-2018 at 07:44 PM

Just curious, how did you break the tie on the DDP/Fabulous Rogeau matchup?

Rougeaus were ahead for most of the time and had more vocal support in the thread, which was good enough for me.

Matte - 9-12-2018 at 07:01 PM

A little sweet 16 breakdown:

A lot of talk about Jim Johnston throughout the showdown. He is responsible for creating five of the sweet 16. Three of those are instrumentals (Austin's, Goldust's, Undertaker's); two of those are songs he composed with vocals done by someone else (Jericho's and Vince's). Two of those five songs made it to the elite 8, and it looks like only one will advance to the final 4.

CFO$ had two of their songs in the sweet 16 (Balor's and Asuka's). Neither advanced to the elite 8.

Four of the 16 are by legitimate bands: Alter Bridge, Motorhead, Living Colour, and The DX Band (if you count them). Two are by legitimate solo musicians: Rick Derringer and Frank Shelley (if he counts; I can't find much info on him).

Two of the 16 are old-school compositions: Randy Savage's Pomp and Circumstance by Sir Edward Elgar, first performed in 1901, and Ric Flair's Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 by Richard Strauss, first performed in 1896.

13 of the 16 were first used as entrance themes in WWF/WWE. The only three that got their start in other promotions are nWo's theme, Ric Flair's theme, and CM Punk's theme. Unless Flair makes a quick comeback against Cena, the final 4 will be entirely WWF/WWE themes.

Seven of the themes debuted in the 90s (Austin's, nWo's, Goldust's, Jericho's, Vince's, DX's, Undertaker's). Four debuted in the 2000s (Cena's, Edge's, HHH's, Punk's [independent years]). Two debuted in the 2010s (Balor's and Asuka's). Two debuted in the 80s (Hogan's and Savage's). One debuted in the 70s (Flair's).

The shortest tenured sweet 16 themes are Undertaker's (1998-1999) and (possibly) Goldust's (he's had several remakes that I can barely tell apart; not sure when the first remake happened). The longest tenured themes are Hogan's and Flair's, who are also the oldest wrestlers in the sweet 16 (not counting Vince McMahon).

12 of the 16 are themes of former world champions. 14 if you count nWo and DX (both teams include former world champions in them). That leaves two non-world championship themes: Asuka (who technically can't even qualify) and Goldust.

Seven are themes of wrestlers still wrestling today: Cena, Goldust, Jericho, HHH, Balor, Undertaker, Asuka. Of those, five are still using their nominated theme (Goldust is using a remade version of his; Undertaker is using a different theme). Six are themes of wrestlers still alive but retired: Austin, Hogan, Edge, Vince, Punk, Flair. One is the theme of a deceased wrestler: Savage.

Two of the 16 were repurposed after originally belonging to a different wrestler: Real American (originally belonged to the US Express) and Pomp and Circumstance (originally belonged to Gorgeous George).

Only one theme is performed by the wrestler it's used for: John Cena.

the goon - 9-13-2018 at 02:29 AM

As a wrestling stats geek, I enjoyed reading that Matte. Well done.

And on a sidenote, how many of the themes in the Elite 8 would be in everyone's personal Elite 8? For me, it would be only Jericho's theme and DX's theme, with maybe Hogan's theme being in there too. Otherwise, my personal favorites like Goldust's theme, Taker's "Dark Side" theme, and Jake Robert's theme have all sadly been axed at this point.

williamssl - 9-13-2018 at 05:03 AM

My favorites in no particular order:

Edge - Metalingus (Alter Bridge)
SCSA - Glass Shatters (Disturbed)
Savage - Pomp & Circumstances
Evolution - Line in the Sand (Motorhead)
Jericho - Break the Walls Down (Sevendust)
Matt Hardy - Live for the Moment (Monster Magnet)

3 of those are in the Elite 8.
4 of the wrestlers are (different version of SCSA)

3 of them are from WWE Foreceable Entry...which happens to have a bunch more that I love including Benoit and Lita

I would argue that 2 more could or should have been (Edge, Evolution)...so it's pretty obvious where I'm at in my fandom re: genre.

Savage's is the only one on my list that stands out as different.

Flash - 9-13-2018 at 08:25 AM

I was kinda surprised that Foley's long time theme; the one with the squealing tires and then goes upbeat, didn't go further... Like I don't even remember seeing it.

Otherwise I dunno what my all time favourite themes are... Cena's is up there, I really dig that one that Drew McIntyre used to use... Picking the best themes is tough because the entrance is such a part of it, or how well it works for a run in versus a big stadium entrance... tough stuff, but I think all of those that have made it to the sweet 16 have generally been well argued for.

It lost in the first round to Cactus Jack’s “Whole Lotta Groove” theme...by one vote.

Flash - 9-13-2018 at 09:09 PM

Ah... Thanks Matte; I think I was playing during the first round; could have been with so many it was easy to overlook the odd thread.

Thanks for doing this BTW- lot's of fun, and it's clear you put a lot of work into this.

OOMike - 9-18-2018 at 11:16 AM

I think I can safely say that all four themes in the final four deserve to make the final four, and all four could legitimately be the champion.

QFMFT

Matte - 9-26-2018 at 05:27 PM

Calling it.

The winner of the 2018 Ultimate Entrance Theme Showdown with 79% of the votes...

"BREAK THE WALLS DOOOOOOOOWN!"

And the winner of the 2018 Ultimate Show Open Theme Showdown...

"Across the Nation" by The Union Underground!

salmonjunkie - 9-26-2018 at 10:59 PM

We should send them an award or something.

Rick, do we have that in the bOOdget?

the goon - 9-27-2018 at 01:46 AM

Thanks for putting on another shOOwdown Matte, excellent work like always!

And I liked this particular one because the winner was kind of unexpected. Jericho's theme is a personal favorite of mine, but I wouldn't have pegged it to win the whole thing. Though I'm still bitter that Goldust's theme didn't even make it to the Elite 8.
